My scenario is 6 teams. I gave auto bids to the conference champions if they had a BCS top-10 ranking (1998-2013). 2001 was a strange year. Nebraska was run over by Colorado in the regular season finale and didn't even rep their division in the Big XII title game, yet was #2 in the BCS. Two SEC teams (Florida (9-2), Tennessee (10-2)) had top-10 standings, but did not win the SEC. That would be LSU (9-3) which was #13, making them ineligible for a playoff spot. In 2014, the CFP began in which the Power 5's get an automatic bid with one at-large. Of course, I'm also in favor of the Other 5 playoff which would include 6 teams as well (AAC, C-USA, MAC, MWC, SBC, and 1 at-large). Enjoy.

Interesting how those would have turned out.

What happened here in 2003.
In 2003, Oklahoma lost to Kansas State in the CCG but was so strong in the BCS ranking it didn't matter and went on to the NC game to play LSU. Oklahoma had a 12-1 record. But you don't have them listed here. Auto Bids en sech I guess.

Thanks for sharing this. Got to think eventually the CFP will expand to more than 4 teams. 6 seems like a workable #.

Correct. Teams that won their conference and had a top-10 BCS ranking got the nod. Bad news for OU, if you will, and yet, they were still #1 overall. Kansas St's ass whipping of Oklahoma vaulted the Wildcats into the top-10.

(2)LSU
(3)USC
(4)Michigan
(7)Florida St
(9)Miami
(10)Kansas St

Had OU taken care of business and not allowed some guy named Darren Sproles to run up and down the field on them all night it would have looked like this...

(1)Oklahoma (13-0)
(2)LSU (12-1)
(3)USC (11-1) vs (6)Miami (10-2)
(4)Michigan (10-2) vs (5)Florida St (10-2)

I do find this pretty cool. Don't forget that Iowa did go 11-1 and were co-B1G champions with Ohio State.

So, is it your take that it will stay at 4 forever? You just don't like how I determine the teams? Please help me. Give me what you think is the best way to do it. I'm all ears.

Iowa was close. That was a season in which only 5 of the spots were automatics. USC (10-2) was ranked one spot ahead of Iowa that year so they would have gotten the at-large and Iowa would have been left out. Had Iowa not lost to Iowa St 36-31 that year it would've been a different story. Iowa St finished 7-7.

Also, Iowa was ranked above Ohio State in 2015?

They tied with Washington St that year. WASU won the head-to-head.

Correct. After the Big Ten Championship, Iowa (12-1) dropped to #5, Stanford (11-2) moved up to #6, and Ohio St (11-1) dropped to #7.

1. There is no reason to have more than 4. It doesn't add anything. There aren't more than 4 teams that really deserve a chance at the national championship.

2. You aren't actually adding more quality games, because the teams you add are likely to be rematch games, or they are teams who would have played anyway in bowl games.

3. Playing 2 extra games at the end of the year is enough already. They are talking about allowing redshirt freshman to play some games just to take some of the current load - where most teams are just playing 1 extra game.

And there is certainly no reason to have auto bids. If a conference champion can't get in the top4 on its actual merit, there is a reason for it.
