This year was never about contending. You don't bother with a pen in a rebuild/tank year. Once you are ready to make your push you then go out and sign a FA pitcher and a couple of pen studs. I think 2020. The Sox will have a rotation of Rodon, Giolito, Lopez, Kopech, and whatever stud they sign. They may go get a bat too. They are doing the Astros plan to a T and it's gonna work.

I am just happy to see Rodon finally get there.
Well, I was going by the premise of the thread ... next year.

I'm still not sold, totally, on Rodon and Kopech is still 'learning & evolving' down in the farm. Gio still has a ways to go, but we can all hope he 'pans out'.

I hope you're right with the Astros analogy ... I think. :)

I suppose that's plausible, but didn't the Astros lose 100 games 3 years in a row before they got to where they are?

Houston Astros Team History & Encyclopedia | Baseball-Reference.com

The timeline up until their World Series win was a pretty steady trajectory from "full blown rebuild" to contention. The three straight 100 loss seasons came from 11-13.

Then...

70-92
86-76
84-78
101-61 (champs)

They just sort of skipped the part of "make a run in the postseason and lose" like the Cubs did in 2015.

However, in 15 and 16 the Astros had multiple stretches of being the hottest team in baseball. If you remember in 2016... they had huge expectations. Had an absolutely putrid first half. Then rallied to nearly make the playoffs.

They showed a good amount of promise before winning last year.
