As you probably know by now, the Steelers are closing in on signing with Morgan Burnett from GB. @FaCe-LeE-uS is a little unsure of his game based on intel from his fam who may still think Vince Lombardi's standards are still in play in Green Bay...lol

Alex Kozora from Steeler Depot breaks down some of Burnett's game tape...I like what I see, but he's definitely better suited for SS.

The early word is Davis to FS...my general thought...I'd rather Davis stay at SS, but the game tape on Burnett at SS I saw quite frankly is better than Davis 2017 campaign, and I have no doubt Davis will be a better option at FS than Mitchell.

Your thoughts?

I've always heard that the Steelers don't run a traditional SS/FS and that they are somewhat more interchangeable than most teams as far as responsibilities go. Any truth to that?

Always liked Burnett from a distance but was really hoping to get a true FS that could cover better.

Posted in the other thread... i got Burnett confused with another ex-player on the Packers (Randall now in CLE). So disregard my family.

I'm against the move of Davis to FS. But if that's their only option I would much rather have a younger player be molded into the transition than to force another vet SS into playing FS. I'm sick of seeing the FS position be played like a LB. They were able to get away with it for a long time when the defense was overall a much better group. But times have changed, and schemes have trended towards needing a cerebral type FS in the backend.

Now the Steelers have to address the elephant in the S room... Wilcox is clearly no longer the apparent starter. So do they really want to be paying a backup S $3mil?

Cut him now.

I've done a 180 on Sean Davis to FS.

Davis is very fast, and supposedly really smart, the QB on the Defense, when he was in College.

He'll do better roaming the backend. Coverage on TE's was a problem for him, pushing him to deep field will minimize his time on TEs.

He's no prototypical FS, but he will be so much better than over aggressive Mitchell who was frequently caught out of position. The team will be better with Davis at FS, and Burnett at SS.

He is most effective playing in the box. He lacks speed but is a willing tackler.

Side note... Pretty sure that deal for Burnett closed the door on Mike Mitchell signing back on a cheaper deal.

Unless (prepares to sidestep rotten fruit - "hear me out"), they cut Wilcox and sign Mitchell for less. However, I don't think Mitchell will take less than the $3 mil they're paying Wilcox. So yeah the door is closed! (Now, ya'll are glad ya didn't throw that fruit at me)

They shouldn't...Golden was half that cap hit....I'm thinking Wilcox would go if the MIA S is still in play...they want him for ST.

I don't think he ever really played a down at FS so I am assuming their first thought is Davis at FS and Burnett at SS.

Bigger question a 3 year/14.5 million how does that fit under their cap?

I'm going to guess they backload it a tad to make it more cap friendly this season. Close to $5mil average, but I'll guess the payouts will be $2-3 in year 1, $5 in year 2, and $6-7 in year 3.

This might piss in some cheerios... But puts it into perspective. I'd love to see the coverage stats (PBUs, & Passer ratings when targeted)

Mitchell hasn't had a sack since 2013 and also 4 of his 10 ints and 4 of his 7.5 sacks all occurred in 2013. Also hasn't had a FF since 2015.

Burnett on the other hand has been consistent through the last few years.

Total tackles: Mitchell 342 in 9 years. Burnett 511 in 8 years.

Also he is 2 years younger than Mitchell and he doesn't do this on every freakin play:

Good pickup! :suds:

Knew there had to be more to it than that. His last 2 seasons had been pitiful in comparison to his first couple.

Yeah not to take away from Mitchell, at one time he was good, but he was brutal the last 2 years. They needed to move on and Burnett is affordable and still can make plays.

Thanks that makes sense and truly that price is much better value than any discount given to Mitchell.
