Motherboard, CPU, PSU, GPU.

Thanks!

I will also mention I am glad i waited on SSD. The price of them have really dropped.

Do you all have any preference, Intel or AMD? Glad I researched that. My dumbass would have bought whatever looked good and the things wouldn't have worked and i would have had a hell of a time wondering why.

After you select the Motherboard - just read/download the manual, specifically the RAM recommendations. They typically list manufacturer/model/speed tested to work with that motherboard.

RAM is the fastest BUS on Motherboards and also the most problematic.

Air vs Water cooling both have their advantages.
Air is cheaper, and if it's a vertical solution also gives outstanding cooling to the power related objects mounted around the CPU.
Water takes up more space and you need to make sure you have room for the radiator in the kit you are looking at in your case.
Air makes more noise and when the fans do die is more prone to overheating quickly. Water still has fans cooling the radiator, but a blown fan on those doesn't ramp up CPU heat nearly as fast/far as air with a blown fan.

There is no right or wrong answer about either. They are situational. I have water on my home units, and build air on all of my units I build for work.

As far as CPU, always go Intel. Yes they are more expensive but they are the best rated for Overclocking and running multiple applications. There are some decent AMD processor for budget, but for performance, it's Intel all day everyday.

It pains me every time I have to use a spinny drive. At this point, they're only useful for backup.

Can't wait for Xpoint drives to hit the market. Might mark the beginning of the end for mechanical storage drives.

It does sound great. Think I better start saving my pennies, because I'm going to want it when it hits the market and it will be over priced, but I'll want it anyways.

Yes, it will be aimed at the server and gaming markets first. I'd still guess it will be at least another 10 years until we see mechanical hard drives fading away entirely. Just too cheap now and have longevity going for them.

If they ever reach half of the potential speed/durability promise Xpoint will rapidly take parts of the market. The initial series coming out this spring do not meet a fraction of those promises yet. And of course I still want one as a gamer. Basically near instant zone loads.

Forgot to mention that I built my computer a few weeks back. Took 11 hours but it worked on the first try. For ~$2,000 I'm pretty happy with it.

Here's the part list blue_suns's Completed Build - Core i7-6800K 3.4GHz 6-Core, GeForce GTX 1070 8GB G1 Gaming, Enthoo Luxe ATX Full Tower - PCPartPicker

You know most of the stores (on-line anyway) will give you an OEM liscense and save you almost 50% if you buy Windows while buying a case and compenents. I have done that since Windows 2000.

Didn't know that. I bought most of my stuff on Newegg during black friday and they had a ton of deals and discounts. I got $45 off alone for my HDD and graphics card by buying them together.

All you have to do is buy a case, processor and memory and they'll sell you an OEM license. Windows 10 Pro is only $139 that way. Microsoft doesn't care as long as you don't try to resell the PC afterward.

Nice build Blue... I'm sure with the processing power of that LGA 2066, it will last a long time.

I still have i5-2500k happily running @ 4.5GHz for the past 5 years... with no real reason to upgrade.
