It was a busy and somewhat eventful day for Boston College football as it completed its 2013 recruiting class. Most of the class was not a surprise and had been known for weeks. BC brought in 15 recruits, all of which we knew about yesterday. However the big news of the morning was both positive and negative.
Robert Davis a running back from Florida, chose Memphis over Boston College. It is unknown whether he still had an offer after BC locked up Tyler Rouse yesterday, but Davis will be playing for the Tigers in the Big East. You have to wonder if Addazio gave him a firm date to make a decision by so they wouldn't lose both, and when Davis wouldn't budge BC decided to move ahead to plan B. With Georgia ATH Myles Willis, BC has two running backs in this class.
The second big piece of news involved Florida transfer Matt Patchan. The 6-foot-7 behemoth was deciding between Ohio State and Boston College, and decided to follow his former Offensive Coordinator to the Heights. This was a huge get for BC, after losing Emmett Cleary and Jim Wetzel last season. If Patchan can stay healthy he will be an instant starter, and hopefully sure up the offensive line next season, a big need for BC. After watching the Eagles last year, I think this may be the biggest "get" of the 2013 recruiting class.
Looking at this class you have two groups of players. Those who will make an immediate impact and those that are more "raw" and need time either bulking up or building up to ACC level football. The other big name I expect to hear from next year is Tevin Montgomery. An absolute stud at defensive tackle, Montgomery has the size and ability to contribute immediately at a position that BC doesn't have much depth at. If he grasps Don Brown's scheme's quickly I would look for him to be on the two deep quickly.
Another ACC level talent that could show up is Drew Barksdale. A lightning fast receiver with speed, Barksdale could jump out quickly. Only two things might prevent him from being a factor this year. One, BC has a lot of depth at wide receiver. Alex Amidon, Bobby Swigert, Spiffy Evans, and transfer Marcus Grant all look to be playing next year. Then sprinkle in Harrison Jackson and Joel Zoungrana, and it's hard to find playing time in Ryan Day's run heavy offense. But as we saw this year, injuries happen. If a few starters go down, I wouldn't be surprised to see Barksdale out there.
Now it is time to look forward to 2014. Steve Addazio has a lot of work to do in what will be his first class of recruits. Not sure what he is thinking about his quarterbacks, but he might want to try and grab an elite dual threat QB. He will have James Walsh, MacKay Lowrie and Christian Suntrup under scholarship, but might want to look to build upon that. Early word is that he is out there actively recruiting Morgan Mahalak and other QBs.
Also BC really needs to look at building depth on the defensive side of the ball. While Tevin Montgomery and Truman Guptafel are nice additions to DT, you want to build from there. The secondary also is getting older, so building depth at cornerback and safety will be important as well. Honestly you can say other than wide receiver BC needs to continue to build quality depth almost everywhere.
This year's National Signing Day wasn't very thrilling, but it could be the last one in a while like that. If Addazio has his way, and backs what he says, this year could be very exciting for Eagles fans.
