The biggest upsets (defined as the largest deviations from my computer fit) in the 2017 FBS season were all posted in the Month of October:

HTML:
11-Oct-17 South Alabama 19 Troy 8
13-Oct-17 Clemson 24 Syracuse 27
28-Oct-17 UNLV 26 Fresno St 16
14-Oct-17 Houston 17 Tulsa 45
13-Oct-17 Washington St 3 California 37

Which do you think was the biggest?

South Alabama (4 – 8) 19 @ Troy (11 – 2) 8

South Alabama came into this Wednesday night game having lost to Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Idaho, and Louisiana Tech. The Jaguars only win was against FBS Alabama A&M. The Trojans of Troy, on the other hand, came into the game having just beaten Louisiana State (24-21), in addition to their previous wins against Alabama State, New Mexico State, and Akron. The Trojans’ only loss came at the hands of Boise State on the Blue turf to open the season. In a classic case of “the hardest thing to do in college football is to play well following a major upset” Troy was flat, turning the ball over four times. Troy would go on to win all of their remaining games, including beating North Texas in the R&L Carriers Bowl in New Orleans. Conversely, the Jaguars would win only two more games (Louisiana Monroe and Arkansas State) while losing to everyone else.

Clemson (12 – 2) 24 @ Syracuse (4 – 8) 27

The Tigers of Clemson came into this Friday night game unbeaten, with wins over Kent State, Auburn, Louisville, Boston College, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest. Meanwhile, The Orange of Syracuse had posted losses to the likes of Middle Tennessee State, Louisiana State, and North Carolina State, while having beaten Central Connecticut State, Central Michigan, and Pittsburgh. The huge upset win did not bolster the Orange’ fortunes, as they went on to lose all of their remaining games (Miami, Florida State, Wake Forest, Louisville, and Boston College.) Clemson, on the other hand, recovered from the setback en route to their seemingly annual tussle with Alabama in College Football Playoff, which ended the Tiger’s season.

Nevada – Las Vegas (5 – 7) 26 @ Fresno State (10 – 4) 16

The Rebels of UNLV opened their season 1-2, with a loss to FCS Howard (who entered the game a 45 point underdog) and Ohio State. Other losses heading into the game in Fresno included San Diego State, Utah State, and Air Force. The only Rebels victories came against Idaho and San Jose State. On the other side of the field, the Bulldogs of Fresno State had only two losses (Alabama and Washington) against five wins (Incarnate Word, Nevada, San Jose State, New Mexico, and San Diego State.) The game was tied at the end of three quarters, but two Rebel scores in the fourth quarter salted away the road upset. UNLV would go on to beat Hawaii and New Mexico, bot drop games to Brigham Young and arch-rival Nevada. Fresno State would go on to win games against BYU, Hawaii, Wyoming, and Boise State, before losing to Boise in the Conference Championship game and eventually beating Houston in the Hawaii Bowl.

Houston (7 – 5) 17 @ Tulsa (2 – 10) 45

The Cougars came into this game on the heels of massive flooding which lead to the cancelation of their game against the UTSA Roadrunners. They did post wins against Arizona, Rice, Temple, and Southern Methodist. Their lone loss was to Texas Tech. The Golden Hurricane, however, posted losses to Oklahoma State, Toledo, New Mexico, Navy, and Tulane. Their lone win was against Louisiana. The Hurricane had two players rush for over 100 yards in this game that ended up being a blowout. It would be their last hurrah, as Tulsa lost every other game of the season (Connecticut, Southern Methodist, Memphis, South Florida, and Temple). Houston would go on to post wins against South Florida, East Carolina, and Navy, while losing to Memphis, Tulane, and Fresno State in the Hawaii Bowl.

Washington State (9 – 4) 3 @ California (5 – 7) 37

The Cougars of Washington State came into this game undefeated, having posted wins against Montana State, Boise State (in 3 OTS!) Oregon State, Nevada, Southern Cal, and Oregon. The Cal Bears, on the other hand, had won their first three games (North Carolina, Weber State, and Ole Miss) and dropped the next three (Southern Cal, Oregon, and Washington) before facing the Cougars. Luke Falk proved to be very generous with the football, throwing five interceptions in the game, which Cal won decisively. Cal would go on to lose to Arizona, Colorado, Stanford and UCLA, while beating Oregon State. Washington State, however, would go on to beat Colorado, Stanford, and Utah, while losing to Arizona, Washington, and eventually Michigan State in the Holiday Bowl.
