That is another mystery about major college football, the NCAA runs the championships and playoffs in every other sport, and in other levels of football, yet lets major college do as they wish..........

I would like to see 16....I think you should always let some of the little guys in, you never know when they will make a run.

16 is to many, 8 would be good, the champion from each from the power 5, the best group of 5, and 2 wild cards.

So I ask you to chew on this...how is the SOS determined when it was clear that outside of Alabama the SEC was HORRIFIC this year?

OK... this is a great article covering the metrics used by the CFP. It doesn't provide the exact formula on how the SOS is structured, but it does mention what I've repeatedly stated... tie breakers like SOS, H/H, top 25 wins... are used to discriminate between comparable teams.

IMO, this has been consistent for 3 years. Comparable teams get the 13th data point thrown in.

Bama has never needed a 13th data point. Clemson had never needed a 13th data point.

Last year OU did not need a 13th data point. This year, tOSU did not need a 13th data point.

In '14, had the Big 12 played a CCG between BU and TCU, the winner would have been in the final 4. This year had the Big 12 played a CCG, the winner would have been compared to UW and PSU. Despite only 1 loss, UW was being compared to 2 loss teams as a result of their weak OOC. In '14, BU was the lowest 1-loss team as a result of its weak OOC.

The Committee has been consistent...

How the playoff committee measures strength of schedule

Strength of schedule is also one of the tiebreakers the committee must consider when ranking comparable teams, along with championships won, head-to-head results, and outcomes against common opponents (without promoting margin of victory). The committee members are free to use statistics outside of those provided by SportSource Analytics (the data company the CFP has a contract with) -- as long as they understand where they come from and how they're compiled.

Alvarez uses a formula developed by Michigan State director of basketball operations Kevin Pauga, who developed KPIsports.net as an undergrad in 2003. His data is used by the basketball selection committee as a complement to RPI. His strength of schedule formula tries to account for "everything you can quantify in terms of what makes one game more difficult than another" while eliminating human bias.

"Playing a good team on the road versus playing them at home, it's two different things, so just going straight by opponent winning percentages is limited," Pauga said. "Beyond opponent winning percentage, if you're factoring in the location of the game, the strength of your opponents' record, I think we can all agree not all 8-4s have the same meaning to them. It's digging deeper than win-loss records."

How could you ever have to much college football? :headbanger:

Only one more game than you are suggesting.....

Hence my biggest beef with the the whole thing, under this situation, Ohio State , the winner, would have been left out.......To insure the best team is included four is NOT enough teams. Hell in 2014, OSU would have been left out if WVU had lost to Baylor, pure BS way to DECIDE a "champion"

IMHO there is a big drop off after that, and there is enough games for the players as it is, school, exams. not to mention the possibilities of injuries. Look at how the injuries have already added up, take that to 17 games which is 4 more then we have now, it is like another third of a season. To much to expect out of students in my opinion.

It would be 16 games total and that would only be for two teams....unless my math is wrong. Everyone else would play about the same amount as now.

16 games for two fighting for champ
15 game for semi losers
14 game for second round loser
and so on.

I know what we can do!!!! There would be zero injuries, because there is no need to play any games at all, let's just have a group of people sit in a conference room and decide Ohio State or Alabama are the "champ" every year. ESPN can start running reruns of the powerpuff girls, much less violence for kids to see. There would be no need for multi million dollar coaches, stadiums, boosters, etc. CLEARLY OSU and 'Bama have the best teams every year, so why bother playing any games!!!!!!

12 game season, CCG makes 13, Round of 16 makes 14, Round of 8 makes 15, round of 4 makes 16, Championship game makes 17 by my math.....I did learn to count on my fingers and toes, 5 fingers and 6 toes LOL

Yeah... a ton of people are stuck on the criteria.

The criteria of conference championships... H/H... and SOS were to be used for comparable teams.

There is not much argument that tOSU proved they were one of the 4 best teams. They stated in the next to last poll that there was a wide distance between tOSU and PSU. But, the margin between UW and UofM was razor thin.

The argument was always between PSU and UW.

You cannot beat 3 top 10 teams and tell me you haven't proven you are one of the best. Forget the name on the jersey. You wouldn't think that about the Mountaineers.

Stop with all of the little man syndrome shit. You don't have to pull it out to embarrass yourself...
It's about hypocrisy. 2 years ago, the Big 12 gets left out. Why? You only played 12 games and A, B, and C played 13. This year tOSU gets in having only played 12, having not won their conference. I don't think the worthless nuts are one of the best teams in the country. Penn State beat them, and they beat Michigan only by having 19 on the field.

There was no hypocrisy. OU finished in the top 4 last year despite playing only 12 games.

Until this year, the 4 best teams were clearly also conference champions. Few people consider PSU better than tOSU. In '07 Pitt won a H/H matchup with WVU, using this logic... Pitt was a better team than WVU... they proved this by winning 13-9. They won despite the ref's calling bogus penalities on Pitt throughout the game.

In '14, TCU and BU had but two top 25 wins each. tOSU had three.

Last year, OU had 4 top 25 wins.

This year, tOSU had 3 top 10 wins. No other team matched that achievement.
  • at #7 OU by 21 points
  • at #8 Wisky
  • #6 Mich
PSU lost two games. The OOC is huge for the committee. They lost at Pitt, and it took them the B1G CCG to earn their 3rd top 25 win.
  • #24 Temple
  • #3 tOSU
  • #8 Wisky
It's all about the wins. Top 25 wins. No hypocrisy...no moving goal posts...

Bama had wins over +.500 teams - LSU, A&M, Arky, UF and WVU.

Miss St had wins over +.500 teams LSU, S&M, Arky

BU played arguably the weakest OOC of the top 6 teams.

tOSU was ranked above BU at week 14.
