Figured we could use a new thread specific to this.

Some guy on TKP posted a good write-up of possible candidates.

I would add Mick Cronin to his list. I wouldn't be shocked to see Whit go back to UC and try to nab their coach. Mick does recruit the East Coast fairly well, too.

Feel free to add, but don't be an a-hole and say Shaka Smart.

Gregg Marshall would be my first choice, but probably very wishful thinking.

i mean, it's not like he'd be getting paid more than a football coach who has been around for more than a quarter of a century and brought the team from nothing into a nationally relevant program or anything, amirite?

I am not so sure. Wikipedia isn't the best of sources but

Cronin said in 2014 that he has turned down “million-dollar raises’’ each of the last three years from schools wanting to hire him, including North Carolina State University, then the University of Illinois and University of Minnesota. But he is pushing for either a new arena or a renovation of US Bank Arena in downtown Cincinnati in order for the Bearcats to remain competitive on a national scale. “I’m thankful to be here. I have zero desire to ever leave,’’ he said.[15][16]

I've got to believe that some pretty decent coach somewhere has been watching for this spot at VT (and in the ACC) and waiting for it to open up.

What a great opportunity. This program has some potential, and has some great intangibles. It just needs the right head coach who can recruit and design a program.

Seeing Buzz Williams name thrown around again. I think he'd be a good fit for VT. Also, looks like Donahue (BC) and Bzdelik (Wake) are out, so we'll be competing against those schools for a coach. Honestly, I think VT has more to offer than BC.

When the pay to play/stipend system is in place, the perennial Big 5 conference basketball bottom feeders will be stealing good recruits from the mid major schools that recruit well and seem to be pretty good each year. I am sure it will not have as huge an effect on bball as fball..but there will be an effect. Hopefully some potential candidates realize this.

Stole that from a local radio show guy, but it is certainly something to think about.

I am not so sure I really want Cronin. Every time I watch Cincy, I shake my head at how out of whack their offense is. Seems Cincy always lacks discipline....like their team is a bunch of Jeff Allen's.

yeah i am not necessarily saying i'm hoping that either, i honestly dont know enough about him/Cincy to have an opinion one way or the other
