With an assist or two from individuals whose backgrounds include evaluating NFL talent, the following is an early projection of the Alabama Crimson Tide's top 10 NFL prospects. Please note that true freshmen were not given consideration for this list. Why? Becasue it's wise to allow newcomers to play a down in the Southeastern Conference before attempting to project their NFL value.
His position doesn't have the same value it once did, but Richardson will still be difficult to pass up.

.] RB Trent Richardson (Jr.): Has the size and strength needed to handle every aspect of the running back position. Teams already know what he can do with the ball in his hands. Coming out of Alabama he'll be advanced in the area of blitz pickups, something that separates young backs at the next level. While there aren't many questions about Richardson's talents, his position isn't as coveted early in the draft as it once was.

.] CB Dre Kirkpatrick (Jr.): In addition to being long and athletic, Kirkpatrick comes with a bachelor's degree in secondary play from the Nick Saban School of Cornerback Development. As we learned from Kareem Jackson's rise up draft boards a few years ago, that's probably worth a round in itself.

.] S Mark Barron (Sr.): Prototype NFL safety size and above-average NFL safety athleticism. If not for pectoral injury, might have been the top safety in a subpar 2011 draft class. Close call between Barron and Kirkpatrick for the second spot, with the difference being that corner ranks higher in value.

.] S Robert Lester (Jr.): I didn't have Lester ranked this high initially but after getting feedback from an AFC team, here he sits. Showed excellent ball skills a year ago; needs to be more consistent from a tackling standpoint.

.] OLB Courtney Upshaw (Sr.): Will benefit from continued shift from the 4-3 to 3-4 defense in the NFL. At 6-foot-2 and 265 pounds, Upshaw is more James Harrison than Jason Taylor.

.] OL Barrett Jones (Jr.): In Jones, a team will draft a guy who can play just about anywhere along the offensive line. Question is, will he be drafted in 2012 or 2013? Ability combined with impeccable character will make Jones one of the safest investments in either draft.

.] LB Dont'a Hightower (Jr.): Is he an inside linebacker or 3-4 outside linebacker (pass rusher) in the NFL? The bigger question for Hightower will involve his surgically-repaired knee, which will be examined more thoroughly than Duron Carter's transcript.

.] LB CJ Mosley (So.): In terms of upside, probably exceeds any other linebacker on Alabama's roster. Instinctive and athletic, While he's two seasons away from being draft eligible, Mosley can already handle one aspect of the job that doesn't come easy for most linebackers: pass coverage.

.] CB DeQuan Menzie (Sr.): Not showing up on many early mock drafts but a productive start to his senior campaign could change that. Excellent size for a corner and can play two spots, including star in the nickel and dime packages. Like Hightower, his medical evaluation and 40 will go a long way in determining when he goes.

.] NT Josh Chapman (Sr.): True 3-4 nose tackles are the NFL equivalent of good left-handed pitching in baseball: everybody wants one, but few are available. Chapman will look to follow in the footsteps of a guy like Casey Hampton, who has survived for more than a decade in the NFL as a 6-foot-1, 325-pound plugger.
