i think al toon just missed being a 49er, and i believe he came out the same year as jerry rice. after a brief google search i have confirmed that the 49ers had toon higher on their draft board but he was picked about 6 picks ahead by the jets. interesting.

great player who i only got to catch at the end of his career.

one player i loved in the badger uni was brian calhoun. can't find a video.

Brian Calhoun! 1,636 rushing yards, 571 receiving yards in his only season at Wisconsin, after transferring from Colorado to play for the home team. The whole Badger team was amazing in Barry's final game...but Calhoun was inhuman that day.

^ That video also reminds me of Brandon Williams....who had a big day receiving in that game. #1 and #2 destroyed Auburn in that game.

dang. video not working. he got drafted by the lions (in the 3rd round?) but his career never got going.

i also remember a short little white guy who had blinding speed returning kicks for the badgers in the late 90's early 00's. can't remember the name, but i wanna say his first name was nick. he was a fun player to watch.

Yup it was Nick Davis. He had a brief shot with the Vikings as a potential return specialist, but I think he just didn't have enough size for the NFL.

Got me thinking about a few people today. Starting with Jonathon Casillas, because I heard his name called a few times while listening to the Packer game. He was one of the most athletic linebackers we've had. Had a little trouble off the field, and those defenses never really panned out the way we thought before he was drafted in 2009, but he was fun to watch. He recovered the famous(or infamous) in Super Bowl XLIV, diving on the pile as the ball was in contention and wrestling it away.

Gotta get John Stocco in here. Where would Barry have been without him between 2004 and 2006? He was one hell of a quarterback, and orchestrated both of the Cap 1 wins against Auburn and Arkansas, turning Owen Daniels, Luke Swann, Paul Hubbard, and Brandon Williams into lethal weapons.

I'll also always remember this....


Not too many Badgers have their own highlight reel on youtube, so I think that says a lot about what John Stocco mean to Wisconsin fans.

I felt like I needed to post my favorite badger of all time, Matt Bernstein.
I could only find a video of him from high school, but he just destroys some kids haha. I even caught one of his famous hurdles!

oen of my favorites was cecil martin, but partly because i knew him. great guy. a little intense.

he was notorious for getting women to back to his room with him......





so they could watch his old high school game films.

i always laughed about this. he had a great sense of humor.

Wait. So really all they did was watch his old high-school game films? Or was that just his ploy...?

I do remember that guy, though. He was a bulldozer. Never really played in the NFL, and I never really understood that. He should have been a no brainer for any team that needed a badass lead blocker who could catch.

from everything i ever heard, the girls always got bored because all they would do was wactch film. now that could be urban legend, but that was what i had heard.

i think he had played for the eagles briefly. but i agree, he should have been a long-timer in the nfl.

Scott Starks. Probably got thrown in as a starter a little too early, but he was a big part of that awesome defense in 2004. Made one of the great plays in Badger history against Purdue. Was making a name for himself in the NFL as a nickel back/special teams imploder before her got hurt. He's back on campus finishing his degree and coaching the current Badgers.

Which makes me think of Jamar Fletcher, Scott Starks' predecessor at corner, also wearing #2. Fletcher also made his biggest play against Purdue, in the game that initiated the jump around tradition. Fletcher was a big part of the Rose Bowl teams.

I believe he is still the only Badger to win the Jim Thorpe award, despite having Troy Vincent and Jim Leonhard in the running.

Jim Sorgi. I should have included him with Lee Evans. He was one of our most prolific passers. He and Evans hooked up for a ton of yardage their last season playing.

And then he backed up both Mannings, earning himself a Super Bowl ring as a steady backup...who didn't do much. Still, nice work Jim.

Which brings me to Brooks Bollinger, and the end of my reminiscing for today. Brooks! Just win baby! This was Barry's guy, there's no question. Brooks knew how to win, and helped hold us together for the second of back to back Rose Bowls. Brooks Bollinger, you are one of the greatest of the Badgers!

Felt like getting this moving again. So many players to cover. How about Ron Vander Kelen.

The star of the '63 Rose Bowl 4th quarter comeback against USC, leading the Badgers to score 23 unanswered points. Though they come up short in that game, later that year Vander Kelen and his teammate Pat Richter led a college allstar team to a surprise exhibition win against the defending NFL champion Green Bay Packers.

Pat Richter should be listed side by side with Vander Kelen, having set a Rose Bowl record of 11 catches for 163 yards in the same 1963 Rose Bowl, and catching the game winning touchdown in the all star exhibition against Green Bay. He was a 9 time letter winner in football, basketball, and baseball, and went to the Washington Redskins as a first round draft pick. He also took over an abysmal Wisconsin athletic department in 1989 and served until 2004. He hired Barry Alvarez, Dick Bennett, and Bo Ryan...and oversaw the renovations at Camp Randall as well as the building of The Kohl Center. Pat Richter...frankly...is the man. While a lot of hockey fans still prefer the old Coliseum days, Richter gave them a respectable new home to share with the basketball team. All in all, his leadership brought pride back to Madison.
