Giants prospect Steven Duggar heating up in the Arizona Fall League

The Giants want an outfielder capable of tracking down fly balls left and right, behind and in front, as their center fielder in 2018. That won't be Denard Span, who turns 34 in February.

Steven Duggar, celebrating his 24th birthday on Saturday, could soon be the solution.

"A lot of things come natural for him in the outfield," Brian Sabean said to Alex Pavlovic in early October. "His reads, his breaks, his ability to outrun the ball, is very impressive."

Duggar's hitting ability has always taken a bit of a back seat to his defense despite putting up encouraging numbers in the minor leagues. Over three years in the minors, Duggar is a career .292 hitter with 17 home runs.

"While the bat is still on the come, he should be a complementary type of offensive player in a major league lineup," Sabean said in the same interview with Pavlovic. "Now, is he let’s say top of the order? I don’t know if we have enough information."

In the Arizona Fall League, Duggar is beginning to find his stroke while showing the patience of an ideal table setter for the Giants. After trying to catch up at the plate against elite prospect pitching, Duggar is on a four-game hitting streak where he is batting .438 (7-for-16).

Duggar went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored Thursday to continue his recent surge at the plate. Through 14 games, Duggar is now slashing .269/.381/.308. He leads the Scottsdale Scorpions in stolen bases, going a perfect 8-for-8 so far, and is second on the team with nine walks.

If it weren't for injuries, Duggar only played in 44 games this past season, the Giants most likely would have given him a shot at the bigs already. With an aging roster as it is, especially in the outfield, the Giants can hand the keys to the Clemson product and let him develop in San Francisco.

11/8 No Games

11/9

Scottsdale (11-12) lose 7-6 in 11 innings

The AFL begins extra innings with no outs and a runner on 2nd base, with no game going longer than 11 innings to save the pitchers.

Aramis Garcia 1-4, 2 RBI

1st pitch RBI single in the 1st inning. Line drive Sac Fly in the 3rd. Flyout to deepest CF in the 5th. Line out to medium right in the 7th.

Steven Duggar 0-5

Duggar made a nice running catch in CF in the 1st. He also made a stong throw on a double and hit the cutoff man who then caught the runner at third going for a triple.

D.J. Snelten 1.0-1-0-0-0-0 (9 pitches, 8 strikes)

Really funky delivery. Bunt single, GIDP (brilliant play by the 1B) then L4.

11/10

Scottsdale (11-13) lost 3-1

Steven Duggar 1-3, run, RBI, HR (2)

Hit leadoff. Walked in the 1st. K in the 3rd. Solo HR off the RF foul pole in the 6th, working the count from 0-2 to 3-2 before the homer.

Joan Gregorio 2.0-0-0-0-2-1

Name is "Juan". Big guy. Looked a lot like Livan Hernandez out there without the weight. Good stuff. Sketchy control. No radar gun at Scottsdale Stadium. (30 pitches, 16 strikes)

Tyler Cyr 1.0-0-0-0-0-0

Solid effort. (9 pitches, 6 strikes). Works very quickly. Gets the ball, on the rubber, pitches. He didn't need the time clock.

11/11

Scottsdale (11-14) lost 12-7

Steven Duggar 2-4, 2 runs, RBI, HR (3), walk

HR to deep right.

Aramis Garcia 2-4, run, 3 RBI, double

RBI Machine. Ten games played, 11 RBI. Nice kid. Chatted a little with him before the game. Showing off some of his new equipment, some special catchers gear designed to prevent concussions.

Went to the evening game in Surprise, saw this gruesome play in the OF. The one player was carted off and went to the hospital He was down for a long time. He was checked out and came back to the stadium before the game was over. His team was down 6-0 when he was knocked out, but came roaring back to take a 10-6 lead, only to lost in extra innings, 11-10. The amazing thing is that the CF caught the ball and kept control of it. He was down for a good long time, too. Scary.

11/14

Scottsdale (12-15) blew a 5-0 lead in a game started by Beede and lost 6-5

Steven Duggar 1-5, RBI, double, 3 K's

Aramis Garcia 2-3, run, RBI, HBP (Garcia looks good at the plate, and his defense is improving. However, he has no walks, none, in 12 games

Tyler Beede 5.0-6-2-2-0-1 A solid start by Beede, though not overwhelming. Threw 71 pitches, from 74 mph curveball to a 94 mph fastball. Only 44/71 were strikes. Kept the ball down, though.

D.J. Snelten (BS, 1) 1.0-3-4-4-0-1 First runs given up this fall by Snelton. 14/19 pitches for strikes.

Stokes, thanks for the updates. One of these years, I want to make it out to AZ for some fall ball.

You will love it.

Phoenix is HUGE. From Mesa in the SE to Surprise in the NW is at least 50 miles, and a good hour drive without traffic.

What I have come to is to stay on the east side (Mesa, Scottsdale) and just go to the games on the east side. Or stay on the west side (Peoria, Surprise, Glendale) and go to games on the west side. Too often, I drive back and forth between Scottsdale and Glendale.

The games are fun. The crowds are small. The players and coaches sometimes take time to talk with fans, autograph stuff, etc.
