cBS reports that Redshirt Sophomore Alex Murphy will leave the program after the first semester. The 6'9" Murphy only played 33 minutes this season and averaged 2.1 points per game through his 31 games. Playing time was certainly the reason. Sorry to see him leave. No word on where he might land although Florida is the logical destination.

Murphy redshirted his freshman year and has seen limited playing time in the past two seasons. He has sat out four of the team’s past five games. As a redshirt freshman, he played in 31 games, averaging 6.3 minutes per game and 2.1 points.

According to NCAA rules, players have a five-year period of eligibility that begins when they first enroll as a first-time student. Because Murphy redshirted his first season after suffering an early-season concussion, any time he spent sitting out due to transfer rules would be lost playing time.

If he spent a full year sitting out, that would give him a year and a half to play at another school after a year and a half of playing at Duke. That lost time could be appealed, however.

He may ultimately land at Florida, according to Blue Devil Lair and Scout (subscription required for both). Murphy’s brother, Erik Murphy, played at Florida and now plays for the Chicago Bulls

Alex Murphy's playing time is limited now and with the most recent recruits he obviously sees the writing on the wall. There is always a pecking order on a team. A kid Murphy must decide whether it's worth it to ride the pine and be a role player on a team like Duke. I hate to see him go. But it also opens up another recruiting spot. Redshirting gave him another year. He was an early college entry as he was supposed to be a senior in high school his first year at Duke. The NCAA should be aware of that too. They should take that into account but we all know the rules of NCAA basketball. I wish him the best wherever he ends up.
