I didn't get any financial aid in college, despite being broke from a broke family, because I worked in HS and saved a few grand each summer. How's that for a GDed racquet?

You do know you have to fill out a FAFSA right?
Because if you're family was broke than your EFC (Expected Family Contribution) was likely negligible and a few grand you saved each summer of high school would be covered under an ACA (Asset Protection Allowance).
So based on that the sum of your comment is ECA + ACA = BS
