Would rather have the top pick. Bigger pool, and picking early in every round.

I'm just saying it's not that big a deal. I'd rather see the kids play well, which means some wins.

OK for you stats geeks....Crawford just made a great play, leaping way up to rob someone of a line drive no doubt single to left. When the numbers are run on Blach, FIP and BABIP and all that, does that ball being hit hard for what should have been a single count against him or is an out an out or what?

That play doesn't effect his FIP (well it does but not in the way you are asking).

FIP only really accounts for homers, walks and K's. Defense is completely taken out. It's a very simple stat really, no exit velo or anything goes into it. Just walks, homers and K's.

OK thanks. Is there some metric where they ding the pitcher for great plays that save his bacon? Seems like they have one for everything so....

ok.. now that was a great game to attend. warm, short (2:27), never in doubt giants win, grateful dead memorabilia. only thing i would have liked changed is for blach to get a complete game, he earned it (oh, and the $12.50 beers are kinda insulting)

I don't think there's a strict formula out there for those because they tend to shy away from defensive-dependent statistics since they vary so much from game to game. They tend to just eliminate balls in play for the most part, expect for homers. The way to look at it basically is if a pitcher's FIP or whatever is much higher than their ERA they're probably getting a lot of help from their defense and vice versa, if a pitcher's FIP is much lower than their ERA they're probably getting screwed by their defense, even if FIP doesn't directly account for those plays. Or just dumb luck.

The closest stat that you are looking for though is probably SIERA, which is tracked on Fangraphs. It takes into account more balls in play than just homers, but not strict plays made by players. SIERA numbers can be looked at similar to ERA, if you add like .70. So a pitcher with a 3.00 ERA is looked at about the same as a pitcher with a 3.70 SIERA.

Rule of thumb with most advanced stats (and frankly all stats), you needs to use all of them to tell the whole story.

(sorry if this sounded like rambling, had a few beers before writing this and it's 1 am)
