According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Felipe Rivero will head to the Pirates as part of the Mark Melancon trade.

Rivero, a 25-year-old southpaw, owns a 4.53 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 53/15 K/BB ratio over 49 2/3 innings out of the Washington bullpen this season. He'll likely slot right into a middle relief role in the Pirates bullpen and could emerge as a late-game option there with his high-strikeout and low-walk rates.

Melancon for LHRP Felipe Rivero (5 years of team control) and minor leaguer Taylor Hearn (throws mid to high 90s and currently has 2.79 ERA in A-ball).

Will Watson and Feliz now share time as closer?

Trading Melancon should free up money to make a trade for a SP.

I'ts a better return than a draft pick.

I hope we can land a good controlable SP to sure up the rotation for a few years.

Not a bad trade for Melancon, getting controllable lefties for the bullpen for a player that is gone by seasons end anyway. They are already decent in the bullpen so this didn't hurt them at all.

I truly doubt they would have gotten a good enough starter for him without giving up high prospects.

I also like the trade, and while Rivero had some command issues in his debut, his stuff is absolutely filthy. He's a couple little adjustments away from being a shut down arm out of the bullpen. His fastball is obviously good, but he's got two really nice looking secondary pitches, too.

Getting a fireballing lefty lottery ticket is a bonus.

We picked up Nova from the Yankees, no reports on what we sent them yet.

The giles trade was annouced like 45 minutes after the deadline, so maybe that isnt everything.

Interesting deadline. Got rid of three of the top four highest paid players and added controllable pieces. I don't know the exact math, but I bet the team shed $5-$10M off this year's payroll.

I like the moves, but would be happier to see the money saved be used to add a solid SP.

Starting rotation is now Cole (R), Hutchison (R), Nova (R), Taillon (R), Brault (L)/Locke (L)/Vogelsong (R)
Bullpen: Watson (L), Feliz (R), Rivero (L), Bastardo (L), Nicasio (R), Hughes (R), Caminero (R)

Interesting trade deadline. Dumped a lot of bad salaries (shame to add Liriano in the mix but he went south fast) but by no means were they sellers since they got usable parts in return.

Not really thrilled with Hutchinson and Nova but it is no worse than Niese and Liriano for much less money.

Ah, we had to stick Harold Ramerez and Reese McGuire in the deal to get rid of Liriano's contract.:tsk:

Wow I didn't know about McGuire that is a huge overpayment of a salary dump.
Granted McGuire has been pretty light hitting so far, but I bet for those two prospects could/should have turned into something more.

Wonder if the Pirates like Jin-de Jhang more, hence why moving McGuire?

I think it's an overpayment, sending McGuire for Hutchison, but I don't think it's truly a salary dump. Hutchison hasn't put it together, but he's got a good fastball, a plus plus slider, and a useful changeup. Adjustments in sequencing to actually get lefties to offer at the change will make him a really good starting pitcher, certainly at least a middle of the rotation guy. And that's not that big an adjustment, really.

He already has swing-and-miss stuff and reasonable command. If he gets the long ball under control, he's a good starting pitcher. I definitely see what the Pirates see in him. I'm just not sure it should have been necessary to give up as much as they did to acquire him.

Yeah Ramirez and McGuire seems like a lot to give up. But they're both blocked and don't have a lot of upside. I wanted them to trade all of the guys who aren't long term fixtures like Joyce, Jaso, Freese but I'm happy with what they did. The team is barely worse than it was a few days ago. Liriano and Niese sucked bad this year. The bullpen doesn't have an established closer anymore but Watson should be fine and added 2 hard throwing lefties to go with Feliz, Schugel.

This clearly isn't the year. But with a few breaks next year could be.

On ESPN the Nationals were getting railed for only getting Melancon a "second tier closer" was how Buster described him. If you judge your closers by velocity that's a fair assessment. Melancon has been nasty since he took over as closer.

And the Cubs gave up a ton for Chapman. The Cubs are media darlings like I've never seen. They were the unanimous trade deadline winner for all their analysts. Because they got a guy that's gonna throw 20 or 30 innings the rest of the season. He's nasty, but he blows saves. I like what the Giants did getting Matt Moore. What a way to fill out the rotation.

I see where you are coming from with Hutchinson but I am surprised it took both top 20 prospects to get the deal done? Not that either really would become much in Pittsburgh but they seem better fit for an off season package to get an upgrade somewhere.

Trust me I am not complaining by their trades today, it this one was very unorthodox and it freed up money to pay Cole and shows they are committed to the young starters going forward.

Herrera was traded again today to the Reds. Wonder how that will work with with Perazza there and with Phillips not willing to move?
Jones isn't hitting at AAA
Grossman has been filler for the Twins this year. Not bad but nothing above replacement.

Quick Breakdown of Money:
Francisco Liriano - $13,666,666 (2016) and $13,666,666 (2017)
Mark Melancon - $9,650,000 (2016)
Jon Niese - $9,050,000 (2016) + $500,000 buyout for 2017 and 2018

Antonio Bastardo - $5,375,000 (2016) + $6,625,000 (2017)
Ivan Nova - $4,100,000 (2016)
Drew Hutchison - $2,200,000 (2016)
Felipe Rivero - $516,000 (2016)

Liriano - $8,689,300 paid/$5,077,366 owed (2016)
Melancon - $6,016,358 paid/$3,633,642 owed (2016)
Niese - $5,754,012 paid/$3,295,988 owed (2016)
Bastardo - $3,450,617 paid/$1,924,383 owed (2016)
Nova - $2,632,099 paid/$1,467,901 owed (2016)
Hutchison - $1,425,926 paid/$774,074 owed (2016)
Rivero - $328,074 paid/$187,926 owed (2016)

Former Pirates Salary saved $12,006,996 (removed) - 500,000 (to Nationals) - $4,354,284 (salary added) + (money from Mets) = approximately $7,152,712 saved + money from Mets (could be considered to be towards Bastardo's 2017 salary)

With approximately 35% of the season left, the money saved is ample to pay a pro-rated contract of a player making about $21,000,000 this year. That is without taking on any additional salary.

So far for 2017 they have just over $50M in contracts (McCutchen, Cervelli, Bastardo, Harrison, Marte, Jaso, Kang and Stewart) with Watson, Locke, Nicasio, Hutchison, Hughes, Mercer and Cole arbitration eligible.

With the $7M saved today and the money they should have available next year, they need to sign a solid SP. I don't think Cole will sign a deal to extend past his arbitration years. The pen is set for next year (Watson, Rivero, Bastardo, Nicasio, Hughes, Caminero, Schugel) and bench (Jaso, Stewart, Moroff, Frazier, Hanson), The position players will all be back with Bell taking over at first. If Kang is guilty then I would try to extend Freese for 2-years/$15M.

The pitching staff will be Cole, FA, Taillon, Glasnow, Hutchison/Kuhl/Brault/Kingham/Williams)

Gone from the current 25-man is Locke, Vogelsong and Nova.
