5 yard penalties resulting in automatic 1st downs

This is one rule I don't like and wish they would change it... It's the defensive 5 yard penalties via illegal hands to the face, defensive holding, illegal contact that result in an automatic 1st down... This bails out too many offenses... If it's 4th and 23 and there is a illegal hands to the face at the LOS, it results in a 5 yard penalty and an automatic 1st down... It's crazy and it's making the game harder to watch because these 3 penalties are called more often each year it seems allowing offenses to have freebies resulting in a 1st down, even if they execute the offensive play, poorly... So basically, you're rewarding them for not executing the play call...

I get that the NFL wants more scoring and this is one way to encourage that but it messes with the integrity of the game imo...

This. Holding can be an auto first. Everything else should be 5 yards not auto first.

Yah, but holding can disrupt an entire play. That'd make it SUPER hard for offenses because any time a guy is remotely beat he'll just grab and hold the guy.

The one rule change I'd like is no more spot of the foul defensive pass interference. Make it like college.

PI is a HUGE game changer and it's called incorrectly enough that they need to do away with these 30+ yard penalties.

IMO this is a non issue, being all teams play by the same set of rules.

So make defensive holding 10 yards, but no automatic first down. Dipshit penalties should not decide the game.

I just wish they get consistent with either calling it holding of OPI or DPI

so on 3rd & 20 just hold the guy & your good.
Penalties are suppose to deter you from doing it, not give you an advantage.
Dont know any teams that are upset over 5 yards & a 1st down for defensive holding.
