Next up the Cainer. We won't mention his career era at Busch.

These Cards seem like a offensively challenged squad though....kind of Giantesque

Don't look now, but that is 3 consecutive series wins...

And there have been some seriously impressive wins in that string.

Now THIS is what we were all expecting coming into the season.

It's probably fair to say that injuries were a big factor. Posey, Bum, Crawford, Smith, Melancon are all at or near the top of their respective positions in the entire game, and the Giants don't have overwhelming talent at all spots.

Will the early season be too much to overcome? We'll see. The dodgers aren't going anywhere. The Rockies look legit. Is that 2nd wildcard in sight? Possibly. I still think the Giants would be wise to sell of pieces that they can, help the future a little bit.

I beg to differ. We are 8 back in the third week of May, and we all know from experience how things can change in this game. I seem to recall we were 6 back in late Aug one year...:D:D:D

I'm still in the keep our guys that will contribute to the future, like Panik and Belt, but I'd still be okay trading Nunez and Cueto so we can keep this competition window open longer is all I'm trying to say.

In a way, I can see it trading Cueto for Bum and prospects.

Gotcha.

JC is 6-9 in QS, and was the same last year, but he had 2 CG and was pitching deeper into games with a 1.8 era differential. Hopefully he comes around, quickly.

Oh btw, Sammy's era in Apr was 6.32 and in May it's 2.73

Jeff Samardzija doesn't have the greatest rap in Giantsland, but he's been really really good this year. If you look past the ERA and the win/loss column, the numbers say he's been one of the better starters this year.

36 K's to 0 walks in May. In 29 2/3 innings. 3rd in K's, K/BB ratio, BB/9, 4th in K/9, 10th in WHIP in the NL. 3rd in MLB in FIP (tied with Kershaw), 2nd in fangraph's WAR, behind only Kershaw.

It's just too early to say punt on this season though. Obviously if they are 6 games back of the 2nd wild card in July they will sell.

Again, going back to my comment to phalp, I'm not for "sell, sell, sell", but guys that aren't going to be a big part of our future, why not squeeze what we can out of them? And it's mostly Cueto on my mind frankly. Trade Cueto, get Bum back in August, call Beede up if need be and get a top 75 prospect or 2, ideally one that can come up and help next year. Extend that window a bit longer.

Agreed 100% but if you think you are making the playoffs you need Cueto on the team don't you?

If the team is contending, Cueto ain't going anywhere. That said...

DO they need him?

The rotation is pretty solid right now (today's game notwithstanding) and that is without Bum or Beede.

That's silly, Cueto is a.proven ace level pitcher. You need those in the playoffs.

Maybe so, so let's purposely have less to go into the playoffs...?

Having Cueto obviously is much better, but I just think that trading him to help of the future is a better course of action. I'm not thrilled about having Cueto around for years 4-5-6, or having him opt-out and re-signing for a bigger deal.

I suspect you'll get your wish because they still have a lot of work to do to actually be in contention in July

I don't know if a couple of months of Cueto nets you "a top 75 prospect or 2."

I doubt it.
