He despised Cain. Said he couldn't beat the dodgers, and would make excuses when he did. All of Cain's success was because he ALWAYS started games at 5 pm, when the batter's eye was tough on hitters.

Yeah, that's bad. No more bringing him in high pressure situations. That's why just looking at ERA is bad for relief pitchers. This dude has been blowing up other guys' ERAs but his is pristine.

Now, Josh Osich looks rather mediocre, thanks to Gearrin. Osich is rightfully on the hook for the runners he put on base but Gearrin needs to keeps those runners from scoring. There needs to be something like IERA (inherited earned run average).

I don't think this is practical but I always thought maybe ERs should be split between the guy who put them on and the guy who let them score. For example, if you let a guy score from 3rd, you get 0.25 of an earned run and the prior reliever gets 0.75. From 2nd, 0.5 each. From 1st you get 0.75 he gets 0.25

Just looked up Gearrin, and noticed a stat called BQR, Bequeathed runners. This is, evidently, a measure of the runners a pitcher leaves when exiting, which are then inherited by the next pitcher.

So Gearrin has inherited through tonight 14 runners and allowed 9 to score, and he was bequeathed 6 runners, of whom only 1 scored. Thus his ERA is artificially low given his performance.
