4 years $16 million. He is a run stopping penetrating 1T. Seattle and Broncos were in the mix for him, but chose 49ers.

Big Names, Big Expectations: Positional Breakdown for Miami Dolphins’ 2015 Defensive Line
Mitchell excels in the run game and was a solid rotational player for Miami in 2014. After signing a 1-year deal with the team Mitchell managed to carve out a role for himself on the defensive line alongside Randy Starks and Jared Odrick.

Phins Officialy Sign DT Earl Mitchell "For Realz"
He's played both three-technique and a nose tackle, and is an underrated member of the Texans defense. He's never been a dominating player but, like Soliai, is able to eat up blocks and take on two players at the same time, using his 6'3", 300-pound frame to free up other defenders to attack opposing quarterbacks. As the Miami Herald's Adam H. Beasley pointed out, the Texans' defense averaged 4.2-yards allowed per carry when Mitchell was not on the field, but that allowed average dropped to 3.1 yards whenever Mitchell was out there.

Miami Dolphins Defensive Position-by-Position Breakdown and Depth-Chart Analysis
The interesting part is that Mitchell will be starting alongside Suh. Mitchell has been a part-time player his entire career and maxed out at 553 snaps in 2013 with the Houston Texans. He's a much better run-stuffer than pass-rusher, but being a starter doesn't necessarily mean being an every-down player. After all, first down is a running down.

Ok, looks reasonable to me.

He should help with the run defense. My guess is that Dial and Mitchell will probably be the DT with Buckner and Armstead the DE in the 4-3. This deal looks fair. Will this mean that maybe the Niners will pass on Allen?

The Broncos with ex Dolphin coach Vance Joseph were also in the running, so it says something about his worth. With him and Williams choosing SF, it's a good sign for Niner fans early. The downside is that he is 30, so by the time SF is truly relevant again, he'll probably be a non-factor if he's even on the roster.

Now, get a true NT and the defensive line becomes interesting.

This. the 9ers need to get a NT if they want to continue with the 3-4 defense. No more trying to see who might be able to do it.

From everything I've read, they're going to a 4-3. The NT position in that scheme is the 1 tech - Haloti Ngata is probably the perfect example.

Saw that. Makes more sense now. Is his calf injury 100% good to go?

Pat Williams is also another good example who played for the Vikings and commanded double teams from the center and guard. I think he weighed around 330 lbs. He was practically immovable. He just stuffed the run up the middle and allowed the linebackers to run free to the ball. Could Mitchell or Dial play that position?

Williams is another good example, and neither Mitchell or Dial are best suited for that position. They would be in the Kevin Williams (DT) role as opposed to the Pat Williams (NT) role during their Vikings run.

So if the Niners switch to 4-3, would Mitchell and Dial fit the mold as DT and Buckner and Armstead as DE? Bowman as ILB, Ray Ray Armstrong as OLB and Lynch as the other OLB?

I'd assume as much, unless they get that true NT through FA or draft.
