100% seems like a cap saving move. Witten was due $12M this year... the Cowboys are in negative cap space, they can't even sign rookies at this point. I'm honestly shocked they didn't just cut Witten and save $8M, but they probably found a way to save the $8M with the contract extension and keep a vet player and all time great TE.

34 years old... That's a gamble. But I think @Sharkonabicycle hit the nail on the head. Seems like a cap saving move.

Not much of a gamble. Cowboys know what they have on the field and in the room... and both are equally important in the big picture. Dude still has game.

It's a cap savings move and they will find Witten's replacement in this draft. This is a solid draft for TE's.

Dallas currently has about $6-7m in cap space, before any Witten extension. The rookie pool will only add about 2.5m-3m in cap expense, due to the cap holds currently in place on the top 51. Where are you getting negative cap space from?

I thought despite Witten having some of the lowest counting stats of his career, 2016 was probably the most effective he has been in the last 3 or 4 years. JMO

They drafted a project last year that seems to be coming along. Guy is a freak but he hadn't play football since he was in ninth grade. I don't know what kind of answer he can give to the position but learning behind JW for another year can't hurt his stock for the next.

certainly has lost a step or two but he blocks very well and still deadly on the little option route pass for 7 or 8 yard gains.

And - he's out there 16 games a year. Without fail. Unlike other, more renowned TE's in the league.

69 catches, almost 700 yards, average per catch right where it's always been. Not really the go to guy in the red zone.

Seems like he was pretty much Jason Witten to me. And as usual, played 16 games.

2nd lowest yards of his career aside from his rookie season. only the 4th time hes had under 70 catches.

his 42.1 YPG was the lowest since his rookie year.

im just saying he wasnt jason witten in terms of fantasy

I could give a fuck about fantasy.

But he was pretty much steady old Witten to my eye and I saw every game.

Bit slower, but just as reliable as ever (Beasley really stepped up) and great in the lockerroom and on the field.

Worth the extension.

No one's denying that. But it's money well invested. The Cowboys will get every penny of that investment. Can't say the same for other, more brittle players at that position.

Not mentioning any names of course...
