I agree MLB should have put a stop to it early on. However, I don't buy the level playing field as justification. The "Everybody else was doing it" excuse didn't get out of trouble with my dad and I don't accept it either.

Funny how football and baseball look at cheating.
Football fans generally don't care if a player is juicing. Baseball players that juiced are considered scum and it ruins their reputation. However, if a batter gets caught with a corked bat or a pitcher gets caught doctoring a ball, its laughed about and life goes on. In football, a 1/2 pound of PSI in a football is a felony.

Off topic ... Nice World Series win by the Astros. You guys really had the entire Detroit area with you ... and it was not because of the Dodgers ... Verlander will always be a Tiger!! He landed in the right spot!!!

pitching is tricky though... YOU WANT the pitcher to use any substance they can to improve their grip... its the movement that you don't want them to use a foreign substance to improve... But how do you police that line??

When I was a hopeful ballplayer, my manager told us "If you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin'". The Baseball Stadium and Basketball Court are the only two place where stealing is legal.

It's just part of the game. Kind of like sign stealing. It's there and you have to catch it. I know it happens & you know it happens, but it part of the "cheating" that baseball fans accept and unless it's against your team everyone generally laughs at it.

I waited my entire life for that. Actually got to go to game 3 in Houston. Had some hopeful times with Biggio & Bagwell and the boys and in 1986 against the Mets, it was nice to finally get it.

A plus to all this is my friend s a Cubs fan. He used to give me grief for Houston never winning the World Series. I told him if takes a century for the Astros to win the WS they are still on a better pace than the Cubs.

A whole bunch of nobodies has hit. 300 for short stretches of time. Not many did it for 20 years. I suppose if you hit .300 for 20 years, you'd have close to 3,500 hits depending on if you were a leadoff guy and took a lot of walks.

I didn't vote on this because I don't know that choosing one over the other contributes anything. If you did one, you likely did the other as well.

I usually conclude that anybody who can play regularly in the big leagues for two decades is the sort of player who makes my team's Hall of Fame. It's hard to last 2 years in the bigs, it's hard to last 4 years. 20 years is practically forever.

And you won't get 3,000 hits unless you play 20 years.

of course... my point is more towards when to tell the ump to check whether the pitcher is cheating... EVERY batter WANTS the pitcher to use something to improve their grip...

this whole spin rate in Houston is interesting.... there seems to be some truth to it as the spin rates are dramatically different...

so does todd helton get in .316 w/2519 hits

btw griffey hit .284 not .300 so not sure why he is being used as .300 hitter:suds:

Disclosure before my take, I am a Rockies Homer. Helton should get in. He did one thing better than anyone else that would get way more appreciation in todays game, he would drag an at bat out to 10-15 pitches and end with a hit.

With how dialed in we are now to pitch count he would be sitting a lot of pitchers down early. Love Todd Helton, I think his statistical case is borderline, that puts him over the top.

I went to game 4 between the Giants and the Tigers. It was cold and rainy and the Giants won the World Series, but I will always fondly remember it!!!

Also if he was not robbed of his MVP I think he would be close to a lock.

The biggest ding against him is the fact that he plays at Coors, but his away stats of .287 BA .386 OBP .855 OPS, are all good, actually not to far off from Griffey

Have to figure someone who hits .300 over a 20 year period is probably going to accumulate 3000 hits along the way.

As far as the poll goes, I chose 3,000 hits, but would take .380 OBP over both of em

I mean it could be as simple as heat and dry air... Houston is much warmer/dryer than Detroit and Pittsburgh...

Ummm... I'll givve you the warmer, but humidity in Houston is a mother.

Plus they play indoors.

Of course, legend has it that Mike Scott was never caught scuffing the ball, because the catcher scuffed it for him.
