With the NFL roster cutdown deadline looming, the New England Patriots returned to the fields behind Gillette Stadium for their first practice of the week. While media access was again capped to the first 10 minutes of the session, that was enough to get an initial look at the attendance and potential hints at upcoming transactions.

In total, 10 players were not spotted:

  • CB Isaiah Bolden
  • S Cody Davis (PUP)
  • DE Trey Flowers (PUP)
  • TE Anthony Firkser*
  • K Nick Folk*
  • G Chasen Hines*
  • OT Conor McDermott
  • RB J.J. Taylor
  • G Riley Reiff
  • WR Tyquan Thornton
*reported departures

Some of the players listed here are currently nursing injuries, including special teamer Cody Davis and defensive end Trey Flowers. Both remain on the physically unable to perform list and it seems likely that they will not be activated ahead of the deadline to do so; if not, they will have to sit out at least the first four regular season games.

Also injured are cornerback Isaiah Bolden, offensive Conor McDermott, guard Riley Reiff, and wide receiver Tyquan Thornton. Their statuses will be worth keeping a close eye on as potential options to be moved to injured reserve either ahead of the re-activation deadline on Aug. 30, or afterwards.

Running back J.J. Taylor, meanwhile, is a new addition to the list. He entered the day on the roster bubble, so his absence at the very least can be classified as “suspicious.”

Three players who will not be back, at least as part of the initial 53-man roster, are guard Chasen Hines and tight end Anthony Firkser as well as kicker Nick Folk. The former two were waived on Tuesday, with the latter reportedly getting traded to the Tennessee Titans.

In other news, the Patriots welcomed back cornerback Christian Gonzalez and outside linebacker Ronnie Perkins. Wide receiver Demario Douglas, meanwhile, is out of a red non-contact jersey; the rookie was dealing with a shoulder injury recently.

The Patriots will have to trim their roster to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET.

The NFL roster deadline passed Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, and with lingering New England Patriots transactions.
Among them, New England has waived running back J.J. Taylor, tight end Matt Sokol, guard Kody Russey, defensive tackle Jeremiah Pharms Jr. and safety Joshuah Bledsoe, according to reports from the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed, MassLive’s Mark Daniels and the Boston Globe’s Chris Price.
Taylor, 25, entered the league with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2020. The former Arizona rusher has appeared in 12 games since then while going between the club’s practice squad and active roster. He stands with 156 rushing yards, 20 receiving yards, 112 kick return yards and two touchdowns.
Sokol, 27, landed in Foxborough last May after making two previous stops apiece with the Los Angeles Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions. The 2019 undrafted free agent out of Michigan State served as a standard elevation for three games last regular season, logging 24 snaps on offense and 10 snaps on special teams in a blocking role.

Russey, 25, agreed to terms with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2022. A 60-game collegiate starter by way Louisiana Tech and Houston, he joined the practice squad after clearing waivers last September. Russey twice served as a standard elevation before signing to the active roster in November, yet remained inactive on the interior for the rest of the regular season.
Pharms, 26, entered the NFL ranks prior to training camp in 2022. The Friends University product did so after tours with the Champions Indoor Football League’s Wichita Force and USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers. Pharms spent his rookie year on New England’s practice squad. Retained on a futures contract in January, he recorded 11 tackles for the defensive line through three preseason games.
Bledsoe, 24, was selected by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2021 draft at No. 188 overall. The defensive back via Missouri began his rookie campaign on the non-football injury list and ended it on injured reserve. Last fall, Bledsoe made New England’s initial 53 and appeared in three contests while recording one tackle.
The road from 90 to 53 will continue further.
The claiming period for non-vested veterans placed on waivers during the cutdown is set to expire Wednesday at 12 p.m. ET. The formation of 16-man scout teams around the league will follow.

Well how did the explosive knee become so explosive? I am starting to question our medical staff.
JuJu asked where Breer got his medical degree and when the team doctors sat with him and asked his opinion on the MRIs that were taken?

JuJu said that hie knee is fine and that he twisted it on an airplane getting out of a tight seat. It was slightly swollen and he was advised to not do anything even after the swelling had disappeared.

Breer has not responded. No one on the medical staff is allowed to respond. It's called HIPPA.

What are you going to question them about? What kind of answer do you expect? Have you seen the MRIs?

I think we should wait and see how he runs, cuts and takes a hit before we give any medical or performance opinions. Fair Enough? He hasn't played in the preseason. In shorts, upper pads and helmet, he looked pretty good catching passes yesterday. Both knees looked normal to me.
