Rolen is often mentioned as the 2nd greatest defensive 3B of all time (all Giants fans will forever remember his defense, btw). And his BBRef WAR is 70 vs Robinson’s 78.

I missed the comparisons of Trammel or Whitaker to the greatest defensive middle infielders ever.

FTR, I tend to be pro-Trammell and I am not settled on Rolen yet.

I think that was as much about hustle from Arias as it was a defensive lapse by Rolen. Whatever the case, thank goodness it occurred.

Jones always flew a little under the radar with me. He always seemed in the second echelon of top players to me, not at the top even though he has reasonably good numbers.

You think a guy with a .300+ AVG, .400 OBP, .930 OPS, 450+ HR, 2700+ RBI, 1600+ runs, 1600+ RBI just has 'reasonably good numbers?'

No, those are pretty darn good I must admit. Just never had much impact on the game in general it seemed.

The guy won an MVP, received MVP votes in 13 different seasons, won multiple Silver Sluggers, won a batting title, was a good playoff hitter, had 9 seasons of 100+ RBIs and 8 of 100+ runs, had 6 seasons of 30+ homers.

What type of impact are you looking for if that's not enough?

Some players transcend the game, Willie Mays, Joe D, Ted Williams, Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron. Jones seems well below them.

Ya, I'd have to say, when matched against players of his era, which I think is all you can really do, he deserves to get in.

Edgar Martinez or the HOF will forever be tainted.

I would like to thank all those that mentioned Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker, they should have gone in together. I can not tell you how much they meant to the city and people of Detroit.

I think that it is time to pur the steroid boys in ... MLB did nothing to stop it at the time and enjoyed it when McGwire and Sosa battled back and forth for the home run title after the lock out. If I were a pitcher, I think I would have feared Barry Bonds more than Babe Ruth.

I raised this question in his RIP thread, but if the HOF waives the last year of Halladay's wait with his passing, making him eligible this year, what effect will that have on the voting?

I'm not sure that he's a 1st ballot lock, but I think he'd still draw significant support. That support is likely going to have to come from somewhere and I would guess it'll hurt some of the guys in the questionable range like Edgar Martinez or those tainted by PED suspicions because Halladay will fill a spot on a number of ballots that could have been a vote for them.

I don’t really understand how anyone questions Halladay’s inclusion. 2-time CY (with 5 other top-5 finishes), 8-time All-star, 3-time 20-Game winner, 8 200-inning seasons (led the league 4 times), a CG machine, a perfecto, a no-no in the playoffs...

No-brainer in my book...

Yea, he is a first balloter IMO... but then again, I never understood first ballot... you either think a player deserves it or not... He is clearly a top 3 pitcher in the past 20 years...

The only knock is his longevity (<2800 innings) but him having 6-7 Cy caliber seasons (likely would've been 8 if he didn't get hit by a line drive in 2005) should be more than enough dominance.

It seems like starting somewhere in around the 1980s the voters put a lot of emphasis on milestones and longevity. You gotta have 300 wins or 3000 hits or lots of 20 win seasons or whatever. But then if you look back at some of the players who got in before that there are guys like Koufax and Kiner who had much shorter careers. I didn't see him much until he was on the Phillies but in those couple years I got to see the great pitcher he was and also the quick decline. I think he did enough to get in though. Also, I know it is not in vogue to talk about wins but he did have a great winning percentage.

Even in Halladay's other four 200+ IP seasons, he was top 4 and finished 2nd twice. Led his league in complete games 7 times (2nd in 2006).
