What I like about this draft so far: no college seniors. Giants going mostly under-the-radar in rounds 6-9, but with younger, projectable guys.

So the top 10 rounds are the only rounds that are included in the bonus pool. The Giants have $11,747,500 to spend on their first 10 picks. They can use some of that money to spend on guys in rounds 11-40 if they want, but they'll face the same penalties if they go over their allotment.

Out of their draftees, I think Bart, Hjelle and Wong will sign for the slot, Rivera and Winn will be above the slot, Bates, DuBord below the slot. Madison, Mora and Hilson are wildcards

Rounds 1-10 have specific slot bonuses for each pick in descending order. For a particular team, add up all of their pick values and that's how a bonus pool is determined. From rounds 11-40, however, each pick has equal value at $125,000. The vast majority of players sign for that amount in these rounds and it doesn't count against the team's bonus pool. Players can sign for more than $125K, but anything exceeding it costs teams against their bonus pool. So if a player signs for $150K, $25K will count against their bonus pool.

This portion of the draft is typically written off by many, but there can be interesting players. Littered with college juniors and seniors, as well as JUCO players, some high schoolers find themselves drafted here that were considered "unsignable." The reason being is teams don't want to waste a pick in the top-10 on a guy that's unlikely to sign because they'd lose whatever that pick value was in their bonus pool (for instance the Giants 5th round pick had a slot value of ~$400K, but if they don't sign their 5th round pick, they lose that $400K to their entire pool, they can't use it to sign someone else). But in these rounds, there's no penalty for not signing a guy. So some teams throw up a hail mary and see if they can get one of these high upside prep players to sign. Every so often a team can get away with it.

This year that major lottery ticket is Brett Hansen. He's a top 100 player in this draft, but had huge signability concerns due to a Vanderbilt commitment. Giants nabbed him in the 38th round. He'll likely be a 1st round prospect in 3 years, and therefore be looking at millions of dollars in bonus money. But he's a local kid, and maybe the opportunity to start his pro career as a Giant will be tough to pass up for him.

Other notable Day 3 picks:

11th round: David Villar- 3B out of South Florida. Junior. Had a huge power increase from his freshman year to sophomore year, then again to his junior year. Has a canon of an arm. Simple right-handed swing.

13th round: George Bell- CF from Connors State College. Son for former major leaguer George Bell. Strong kid, interesting bat. Probably won't stick in CF

14th round: Bryce Tucker- LHP from Central Florida. Purely a reliever, throws 88-93 with the fastball, just so-so slider. Potential LOOGY if he can refine his breaking ball.

15th round: Matt Frisbee- RHP from Greensboro NC. He has good size at 6'5" 215 lbs. Throws low-mid 90s with the fastball and yes, he throws a slider. But not a frisbee slider unfortunately, more of a hard biting slider. Here's an article on him: UNCG ace pitcher Matt Frisbee turns summer struggles into spring success

17th round: Ryan Olenek- OF/RHP out of Ole Miss. So there's some discrepancy here. Olenek was listed as a pitcher on MLB.com, but the Giants announced him as a RFer. He pitched only once in his career, and was hitting 90 on the gun. Not much power to speak of, nor a huge hit tool. But he was the favorite of Kiley McDaniel on Fangraphs, who's a respected scout. Interested to see what he ends up doing.

19th round: Randy Norris- CF out of Winston-Salem U. Really fast, 92 steals in 3 seasons. Cool name.

25th round: Fabian Pena- C out of Manhattan College. Solid defensive skills, a little bit of pop, got a hit off of 1st round pick Logan Gibert.

26th round: Jacob Lopez- LHP out of College of the Canyons. Soft-baller. Fastball in the high 80s up to 90, slider in the mid 70s, curveball in the low 70s. Baseball Census has a full report on him, and they like hi a lot. College of the Canyons LHP Jacob Lopez Scouting Report, 2018

27th round: Dylan Dusek- LHP out of Texas Tech. Notable because he was the first college senior drafted by the Giants.

34th round: Lucas Krull- LHP out of Jefferson College. Weird path for this guy. Committed to Arkansas to play football. Redshirted. Transferred and never played. The college he transferred to (Jefferson) didn't have football, but he didn't play baseball there either. He's ranked as the 3rd best JUCO football player, despite never playing. In high school he threw 96. I'm guessing he won't sign.

35th round: Chris Roberts- RHP out of San Jacinto College. Horrible numbers, but throws in the mid-90s so he's interesting.

----

All told: 25 college players (five seniors, 20 juniors), 10 JUCO players and five high schoolers (two inside top-10).

23 pitchers, 17 position players

Five LHP, 18 RHP, four C, zero 1B, zero 2B, two 3B, three SS, eight OF

Interesting. Sounds like the 34th and 38th picks won't be signed.

Not uncommon in those rounds. Giants taking shots a talented players and seeing if they can convince them one way or another. Sometimes works, usually doesn't

Yup. The Giants signed only 5 of their last 10 picks in both 2016 and 2017.

Wasn’t Hilson a signability drop?? That is a big signing.

Somewhat, but I expect most guys drafted in the top-10 rounds to sign these days. Too much risk for teams if they don't.

I think he'll definitely be overslot, and is a nice get for sure.

Alright, I've got some concrete numbers now.

3rd round- Jake Wong signs for $850K (slot=$730,700)

4th round- Blake Rivera signs for $800K (slot=$528,200)

6th round- P.J. Hilston signs for $520K (slot=$295,200)

9th round- Ben Madison signs for $140K (slot=$154,200)

The Giants have $11,747,500 to spend on the first 10 round, but they can spend up to $12,334,875 (5% over) without facing too still of penalties. They have done so the last four years, so it's reasonable to expect it again.

So far they've spend $2,310,000, or 35% over the slot.

Rivera and Hilston are no surprise that they're over. Wong is somewhat of a surprise, for me at least. (An optimist would say the Giants got good value in the 3rd round in terms of upside).

The only guys I see taking some money below the slot, though, are Bates and DuBord, and I don't see them making much of a difference. Maybe Bart is taking a cut.

I'm not worried yet. In these first 10 rounds the Giants wouldn't have drafted these guys without a good idea of what their price was, and a general idea of how they could afford everyone.
