Here's the rest of Andy hart's observations.

--With the wet conditions, Brady wore a glove on his left hand but had a bare throwing hand. Both Garoppolo and Brissett went without gloves altogether.

--The defensive linemen worked on scooping up fumbles near the sideline and returning them under the watchful eye of defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.

--The wide receivers and running backs caught passes and then turned up field through a gauntlet of pads in a drill. The ball carriers were then poked with the joust sticks as they exited the gauntlet.

--Cyrus Jones, Justin Coleman, Jonathan Jones, Dwayne Thomas and Eric Rowe took some reps as vice guys on the punt return team in a special teams drill.

--Brandon Bolden, Dion Lewis, James White and James Develin worked with Brady on some short throws in group work. Interesting that the fullback was included with the passing backs. Lewis made a nice, one-handed grab on an out in the drill.

--Later the running backs caught passes in the back of the end zone. The coaches reminded the backs to focus on keeping their feet in bounds, something that Rex Burkhead failed to do on his first chance in the back left corner.

--During some group work between the pass catchers and the defensive backs, the defenders did pushups after allowing completions in the end zone. All the players and the coaches did the pushups as a group.

--The first offensive line to take reps in most drills was, from left to right, Nate Solder, Joe Thuney, David Andrews, Shaq Mason and Marcus Cannon. The group got some work in the running game working against scout defenders holding bags.

--Devin McCourty stood out on the field as the only player wearing bright red shorts.

--During the middle of practice the entire team lined up on the sideline. Three different coaches then rolled a ball out on the field and one player would run after and dive on each ball for a fumble recovery. Brady was initially standing to the side watching before he strapped his helmet on and took a turn. Gronkowski actually failed to recover the ball on his rep and had to take a second turn to complete the work to the satisfaction of his coaches. Can’t be said that the Patriots star players don’t do all the drills and dirty work of their other teammates.

--Danny Amendola, Cyrus Jones, David Jones, Cooks and Edelman took reps returning punts at various points throughout practice. It was admittedly a tough day for the work and all had issues at one point or another. Amendola had a drop. Cooks had a drop. Edelman had a rare bobble. But Cyrus Jones struggled the most, allowing a number of balls to hit the ground. After one muff he kicked the ball, seemingly in frustration.

--David Jones is an interesting guy to see back deep, given a 6-3, 210-pound build as a defensive back that’s not exactly traditional of a punt returner. Jones did have a few kick and punt returns in his career at Richmond.

--Ryan Allen was booming the ball throughout the workout. He was driving the punt returners back on most attempts, though he did seem to have a wind at his back. Still, he was hitting the ball very well.

--The receivers/cornerbacks and tight ends/linebackers took turns working on catching passes over their shoulders during one drill. The action took place under the watchful eye of Belichick, who emphasized specific fundamentals with each rep for each pair of players.

--There was a minor scare at one point in team action in the red zone. Chris Hogan ran to the back right corner, was bobbling the ball as he continue to run out of bounds and ran into a golf cart that was parked at the edge of the field. He sat in the back of the cart for a second before bouncing up and jogging back to finish practice showing no signs of injury.

--Newly signed wide receiver Andrew Hawkins took jersey No. 16 for his first practice in New England with DeAndrew White switching to No. 17.

--During team action in the red zone late in practice the intensity of the rain picked up a bit. So, too, did the number of deflected passes and balls hitting the turf. Some passes seemingly zipped right through the wet hands of otherwise open receivers.

--Brady had one play where he tried to pull the ball down but lost control, with McCourty scooping it up for a would-be return.

--Throughout the workout it seemed that Butler took his normal spot as the left cornerback with big-money newcomer Gilmore manning the right side. Second-year man Jonathan Jones got reps in the slot working with the two Pro Bowl veterans.

--Things got a bit competitive between the offense and defense late in practice. Amendola beat Cyrus Jones for a touchdown pass and threw the ball in the air in celebration.

--Brady also got into it with the defensive sideline as a whole. He seemed to talk a little trash to the group after throwing a touchdown to Gronkowksi in the back right corner of the end zone. Shortly thereafter, though, the sideline got payback on an incompletion thrown behind the big tight end. The sideline made kicking gestures to signal that the offense would have to settle for the field goal after the incomplete third-down throw into the end zone.

--Cooks made a gesture like he was reaching for his arrow from his quiver after catching a touchdown at one point in practice. In the past the receiver has used a mock bow-and-arrow celebration on touchdowns. Despite the loosening of the celebration rules by the NFL this season, Cooks said after practice he would not be bringing back the celebration and risking a potential penalty.

--Burkhead, who had a very good practice overall, made a nice touchdown reception to beat Jordan Richards in the back left corner of the end zone.

--D.J. Foster also had a solid day, highlighted by a strong hands catch on a slant from Brissett for a touchdown very late in practice.

--At the conclusion of practice the entire team did some conditioning work on the hill on the far side of the field.

Was reading somewhere that Hawkins can play the gunner spot on ST and that might be a swing in his favor. I would rather have Hawkins than Bolden out there. Going to be interesting. Anyone think Dola is a lock? Cooks, JE, MM, Dola, Hawkins, Hogan? I can see 6 WR with only 3 RB and two TE. Christ imagine Cooks, JE, MM, Hogan, Hawkins out there in a 5 wide....damn...

Just a few tidbits that didn't seem to get mentioned............

Primary CB who finished the OTAs as the main slot corner....................Johnathan Jones

Rowe and Butler pretty much split play on the left side. When Gilmore was on the left, Butler was on the right 100%.

Cyrus Jones may be playing his way off the team. He fumbled two punts on Thursday in front of the media but someone told Mike Giardi that he dropped a couple of others earlier In the week. Could be the reason Hawkins was signed.

Austin Carr caught two great TDs on Thursday, one from Brady, one from JG. Very, very impressive week.

Thanks as always BK.
Cyrus has really turned out to be a disappointment. What a waste of a high draft pick. Maybe he'll figure it out but it doesn't sound like it.
I saw some reports about JJ getting those starter snaps. I must say that was a shock. It's a good problem to have a guy like Rowe sitting there and used to cover bigger receivers and TEs.

If it came down to roster spots I'd rather hold onto Rowe and JJ and release Cyrus the virus.

Jonathan Jones was last year's UDFA steal, Car could be this year's. I guess it is great that we are loaded at both positions but cuts will be tough!

DJ Foster been looking good too?????

Regarding the wasted draft pick... Cyrus is essentially replaced by JJ so, as mistakes go, it was fixed quickly. Add to it that there's great value by continuing to have UDFs make the team.... It makes the top UDFs want to come here instead of other places where they won't get an unbiased shot of making the team.

I'm all about late draft picks and UDFAs making the team. However, even though JJ replaces Cyrus it doesn't make up for NE wasting their top pick in 16. Lots of good players on both sides of the ball were still available and are contributing on their teams. Moreover Cyrus by many experts was a 3rd round pick at best. BB and his college connections get the best of him sometimes. You would think Cyrus being a receiver prior to becoming a CB could at least catch the ball?

Very valid points but with regard to "get the best of him"... I'll put money on BB to get the best more often than not... Even his mistakes have value because repaying loyalty is priceless.

Funny thing is the returning should've been the easy part for him to transition to the league in. I figured even if he didn't work out as a CB, his return skills would make him eventually worth the pick where they took him.

I never figured out how Jonathan Jones wasn't drafted.

I never question his picks for the simple reason that BB has seen something in a player that he either wants to develop or wants to put into play immediately. It's the player who generally won't or can't make the self improvement. Generally it's more "can't" than "won't". Jones admittedly stated that he had a bad year last yearband was working hard in the off season to improve. Problem is that working out with no one watching and no one around with expectations or hope is much easier than having 15 coaches watching intently for flaws. If you swallow too much spit just before you drop a punt, some one will notice and tell you to swallow before the ball is punted and not again until you're on the sideline.

His return skills should've been the icing on the cake. You don't draft a guy in the 2nd round, with your first pick for his return skills.

BB saw something and he likely bought a bill of goods. I wonder if he can get his $ back, lol.

That sucks about Cy Jones. That is what, two 2nd rd picks that were a bust: Richards and now Jones? I mean it's not like they are hurting this team and stuck with them and no one else. I am starting to think maybe Richards was a back up if Harmon left? DMC, Chung, Harmon, Ebner and prob Killings will be the ones who make this team. Jones will be here this yr we can count on that, but how much does he actually play is the question?

It's time to focus on who is on the team and whether they earn a spot and earn playing time. Where they were drafted or how they came to the team is no longer relevant. As for all the players we "could have had"... that's not relevant either becuase they can't make this team if they are not on it.

Time to move on and focus on the players on the team and how they perform.

PITTSBURGH -- The Steelers are expected to play more man coverage on defense because "that's the way to win a Super Bowl," cornerback Artie Burns said.

The plan comes into focus five months after New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw for 384 yards and three touchdowns in the AFC title game against a Steelers scheme that Brady clearly saw coming. The Steelers tried a few man coverages in the 36-17 loss but primarily played zone, with neither being particularly effective.

Atlanta Falcons, have had success with man coverages, along with the Super Bowl 50 champion Denver Broncos.

The Steelers drafted Burns, a press corner out of Miami, in the first round of the 2016 draft with more man coverage in mind, but the defense didn't have the personnel to run the scheme consistently. This offseason, the Steelers signed Coty Sensabaugh in free agency and drafted third-round corner Cam Sutton, primarily a press corner at Tennessee. They also return starters Ross Cockrell and William Gay.

Defensive backs coach Carnell Lake said during draft week that the Steelers wanted to play less zone.

When asked what the great quarterbacks can do against a zone, Burns said they find the soft spots. Ask Tom Brady. After the title game, Steelers players admitted to being caught off-guard by Brady's no-huddle attack and his ability to find receiver Chris Hogan, who wasn't central to the game plan but caught two touchdowns.

"It's always some opening in a zone defense," Burns said. "It's someone who missed a drop, or it's always some group in a zone defense. To be able to play man, to get a guy right in someone's chest with the pressure, it affects the quarterback a little bit."

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots running back James White stepped through the doors into the media workroom on Wednesday and flashed a smile of bewilderment before laughing under his breath.

It was almost as if he was asking, “What are all of you doing here?”

“They said it was going to be a small group,” White said to a crowd of about 40 media members in his first offseason interview since the team’s offseason program began in April. “It’s a pretty big group. But it’s good to see you guys again!”

That drew some laughter from the assembled reporters, as the scene reflects, in part, how life has changed for White since his standout performance in Super Bowl LI (14 catches, 110 yards, TD; 6 rushes, 29 yards, 2 TDs; successful 2-point conversion). It’s almost as if White is fighting that change.

The understated fourth-year running back said Wednesday during a break from voluntary organized team activities that he has been trying to put his game-winning Super Bowl touchdown behind him.

“I traveled a bunch, but that was about it. I’m trying to put that in the past. It’s a new season. Nobody cares about that anymore. I just have to get focused on this year,” he said.

Asked how many times he has seen the game-winning touchdown, White said, “Too many times. But it is what it is. I want to continue to become a better player and do whatever I can to help the team this year.”

The Patriots are obviously excited about that, as in April, the club signed White to a three-year contract extension through 2020 that has a cash value of $12.69 million. White called the extension a “surprising development” because it wasn’t something that was on his radar.

“I’m happy to still be here, happy to have more opportunities to be with this team. I’m just very excited,” he said. “It’s definitely nice, but at the same time, you still have to work. Nothing is for certain. You have to go out and prove yourself each and every day.”

I know you don't like Richards but most safeties aren't all that in their 1st year or 2. Jordan still has a good chance to make the team. If he stubs his toe in preseason, you see him gone.

Cyrus was a head case last year. If he has a great preseason he'll stick. Will he get a chance if he muffs a couple of punts?

I think Chung is done.....

I don't know if I like Richards, he can't get on the field. This is his 3rd yr, and all we see is him on ST. He was a 2nd rd pick and most 2nd rd picks play, then again it's NE and things are different around here. He is basically playing for a ST/backup role at this point. We have 3 damn good S ahead of him (DMC, Chung, Harmon) and Ebner. I think he is on the bubble esp if Killings is as good as many think.

Jones will be here and have a chance to compete as a PR and Slot CB. He just might be inactive from time to time. It's yr 2 for him, so not worried he will be cut. It's usually year 3 that these guys go.

Isn't this Chung's last yr?? I think he is fine. He can play a little LB at times, so that is pretty damn good and he usually takes the TE when it's passing downs. I like Chung.

ounds like the hybrid LB/S role may be headed to Langi, though it's a bit early to declare that... But like all other positions/players.... It's less about the position or player and more about the role.... Chung was great in his role last year, but can someone else play that role?

Many NE posters hated Ebner early on, Most hated Harmon, Most hated Ryan, McCourty sucked his 2nd year and had to be moved to S. Chung has been let go already and we brought him back.
See the pattern? We often develop our secondary.

We are developing Richards. He must make it this year or he'll be gone. He will play this year.
Cyrus has what it takes to make the team. He must get out of his own way!
