 onto Milwaukee :suds:

Young guys hit a roadblock. This was a rough series. But it was expected.

Now this upcoming series against the Orioles should tell whether to take the Reds seriously or not.

Thames is the Man

Just hit another booming home run tonight and have a 9 - 0 lead. He has now set the Brewer record for most home runs in a month. How may games do the Brew Crew play against Cincy? I think they need more!!

Thames always had power, but his plate discipline and ability to make contact were question marks. But so far, those haven't been issues (17.8% walk rate, 21.1% strikeout rate). He's not swinging at nearly as many outside pitches as he did when he came up with the Jays (36.8% in 2011; 19.6% in 2017) and his swinging strikes are down. The .372 BABIP and 52.4% HR/FB rate (!!) will come down, but I think it's safe to say he's a legitimately good hitter. Steamer and ZiPS project him to hit 26 more home runs and a wRC+ around 126-129 for the remainder of the season (which is still quite good), but those projections might be conservative.

3 1/2 games separate the whole division right now. Definitely not as separated as I thought it would be but its still really early.

To be fair, we were playing the Braves and Marlins but Ill take it.

The Cardinals were playing like the Braves and Marlins earlier in the season but they seem to be doing better in close games and playing better on defense (or better than what they were)

I still see some really weird stuff. We had a runner called out on a sacrifice bunt because he was on the fair side of the foul line as he ran into first base and it wiped out at least a run that inning for no reason. Had a guy dive and whiff in the outfield last night, too. Definately not playing 'Cardinal Baseball' at the moment but still winning so thats a good sign.

Get back to me when they've played 60 games, 80 games and get into August.

Cardinals send Matt Adams and cash to Atlanta for 19 year old Juan Yepez. Don't know anything about Yepez, only that he is being assigned to Single A here in Peoria.

If the Reds had peanut butter and pitching, they could make a sandwich.
If they had some bread.

Its weird that the Cubs, Brewers and Cardinals dont seem to have any type of home field early on. I suspect this might change a bit but its not a good sign for the Cardinals to be having it happen again after last year

I think the attachment to metrics has had a lot to do with it. Teams don't build rosters to fit the ballpark now, they build the rosters to play to the stats. That probably isn't a bad thing.
