Clemson needed to be undefeated AND it probably needed to be played at a more historic venue than some soul-less generic NFL stadium in Tampa.

No 2003 Fiesta Bowl? I need more time but, this might have topped both.

Plus, the Rose Bowl had bigger and more stars.

Put it like this, you can debate which one was the better game, but the Rose Bowl was a bigger game.

Can make the argument the stage was bigger in the Rose Bowl, I will however point out that was not a rematch game. Both are among the greats.

This one was closer to the FSU win than the 06 Rose. That game really has it all: MEGA hype heismans, alomost every corp on each team was superlative, arms breaking, high flying td's and int's, last second scoring, dynasty implications, the best cfb player of all time, etc.

And SC was on a 34 game winning streak, with a chance to 3peat

1a last night 1b 06 Rose 1c 03 Fiesta. Any one of those three can be debated for IMO and I couldn't call the person wrong.

Boy those "dynastic implications" died a quick death.

This was a great game, but it missed all the build up elements of 2006.

Based entirely on gameplay, it is close to being equal. But, everything else favors the 2006 matchup.
The 2006 game had the weight of all its build up. And it still over-delivered.

Every week, the talk was about the showdown between USC and Texas...and each week the hype grew.
It wasn't a matter of IF, but WHEN those two settled it on the field.

I know this was an interesting rematch, but a lot of people did not even have Clemson getting there at all.
The expectation was Big 10 v Alabama....even the day of the playoffs, Ohio State was the favored team.

There wasn't a season long ever building tension of the inevitable meeting.
With USC/Texas. Both teams spent every week from August 1st talking about the Rose Bowl.
There was not a single week when they were not ranked #1/#2 .

I break out into a nervous sweat just thinking about that game.

I lost 10 years of my life that night
