Mariners and Seahawks. :)

In the AL, I want the Royals to make it, because I don't like it when defending champs aren't in the playoffs the next year. I like the intrigue to see how they do in the playoffs the following year, and who, if any, can knock them out.

BUT, seeing as the Mariners are also in the wildcard mix, it would be cool to finally see King Felix pitch in the playoffs. Hopefully for more than a wildcard game.

I guess a Texas / Cleveland / Baltimore, with Seattle + Kansas City as the wildcards, is still possible, if both Seattle and Baltimore go on winning streaks, and can get ahead of Toronto . They would have to both pass Toronto.

My list looks somewhat similar but I think I would swap AO and UO

Through 2010, based on Serena's accomplishments then, I would have ranked AO as the best, ahead of Wimbledon. I think the AO bounce helps her return game a lot.

But based on her accomplishments now, I'd agree with cezero.

Also, since she's won at least 3 majors at every surface, and made 4 finals (FO), I can't say she has a "bad" surface anymore, just some that aren't her best.

I personally think that the strength on any individual surface changes with age

Watching the finals now on tennis channel. Good stuff.

Can you imagine how many more GS titles Murray would have if he could perform in finals like Stan does? I say another 3 or 4

That hold by Stan at 4-4 in the 3rd set was the match

That hold by Stan at 4-4 in the 3rd set was the match

Stan was under stress so often, facing break points and such. I'm surprised Stan was able to break back in the 2nd and 3rd, after having a break lead and getting broken.

And yeah, there were a few key holds too.

This was another big hold in the 2nd set, after he'd broken for a 2 - 1 break lead:

++++++++++

As it happened: Stan Wawrinka wins U.S. Open final

Djokovic had a look at a break back at 0-40, but Wawrinka fights back to consolidate the break. Big, big hold from the Swiss there. That was a crucial game that looked like it was going to slip away from him rather quickly. But he turned things around and now has built a solid lead. Djokovic to serve.

Do you mean the surface changes properties with age?

Or do you mean the player prefers different surfaces during his/her career?

Pretty sure HS means that as a player ages/matures, their strength on surfaces fluctuates.

But the AO, USO, and Wimbledon all mess with court speed and balls (which have a big impact on speed and bounce) every year, too.

Serena likes a medium fast hard court with a low-ish bounce, so the AO works out well for her.

The low bounce at Wimbledon is super important for Fed with his backhand. High backhands wear him out more than any other shot. The fact that they've slowed it down so much over the past 10 years has actually hurt him. Low bounce+lightning fast is still the best for him, and has become increasingly so, IMO.

I looked at my DVR's program guide for the previous few days.

For me, the Men's Final was scheduled to be broadcast on Tennis Channel on Tuesday afternoon.

Yet you were watching it Monday night.

Were you watching the full match broadcast? Or were you watching "US Open Tonight", the highlight show?

Who were the commentators on Tennis Channel?

Did they have Wawrinka in the studio post match?

Since Venus is taller, does she like a higher bounce?

I don't remember the name of show but it was the mens and women's finals. A 6 hour program if I remember correctly.

Serena is a power and serve player like Pete was. Pete used to be strongest on grass but toward the late years his consistency had gone out the window and he became a step slower for serve and volley. However his stronger surface became (in a relative manner) on a true bounce surface like the USO hard courts where he won his last slam. Clay will be the least favorable and least strong surface for anyone and Aussie open as well because of the harsh conditions and slower bounce.

2014 and 2016 were good USOs, lots of good matches. 2016 may be my favorite now, among USOs I've watched from start to finish. I didn't watch the 90s ones from start to finish, probably only watched the latter rounds.

Not sure if you guys is into Davis Cup much but damn good semi finals this weekend as Great Britain vs Argentina which means at some point this weekend, we should get Andy vs Del Po in a best of 5. Interested to see who Britain go with as their 2nd singles player. Evans and Edmund are very close in the rankings (53 and 55)
