Everything I've been reading sure sounds like a shitty first week of the French. It will be cold and rainy almost every day of week 1

One of my favorite things about the French is the dynamic in conditions, yet it's still playable unless there's pretty heavy downpour.

Rafa's advantage is lessened the more cold and wet it is. Nole's, too, to a degree.

Followed by a shitty second week. Welcome to the French. I am sure it will be mostly the pussbag dirtballer specialists that will be complaining about the conditions too. I remember when they had to play on a newly formulated firmer clay (some blue stuff) in one of the warmup tournies a few years ago. The whining was epic.

I remember that. Shit was hilarious. I think it was at Madrid or Barcelona where they tried it

It was dangerous, actually.

Since it's the "2016 French Open" thread, I'm hoping that there will be a few on here who actually talk about tennis during the French without the petulance about the surface. Baffling for actual tennis fans.

No reason why Sock should not make it to a 3rd round match vs Cilic

I haven't watched any of today's matches yet, nor looked at the schedule. Doing my predictions.

Men's Draw:

Djokovic's Quarter:

Berdych - Poposil 1st round: This might be interesting. I'll take Berdych in 3, but wouldn't be surprised at a long match.

Berdych - Ferrer 4th round: Ferrer is getting older. This would have been a tossup before, but I think Berdych takes this in 4.

Djokovic - Berdych QF
: Djokovic in 3. I'd hope for a good match, but don't think Berdych can keep all of those balls in play. He has a tendency to overhit. He'd have to hope for a 50 unforced error day from Djokovic, in order to push him to 4 or 5.

Nadal's Quarter:

Kohlschreiber - Almagro
1st round: This could be a good match. I think Kohlschreiber is more well rounded, I'll take him in 4.

Tsonga - Baghdatis 3rd round: I want a good match, so I'll say Tsonga in 5.

Tsonga - Nadal QF: I don't think Tsonga will win a set. Nadal in 3.

Wawrinka's Quarter:

Wawrinka is so unpredictable that he could lose to Rosol in the 1st round.

Simon - Dimitrov 3rd round: This has to be a classic. I think Dimitrov takes this in 4 with a tiebreaker 4th, but am rooting for Simon in 5.

Wawrinka - Dimitrov 4th round: Usual stuff. Wawrinka is more talented, but can make mistake, so I could see Dimitrov winning in 4. I'll pick Wawrinka in 5.

Raonic - Cilic 4th round: I don't know if neither can get this far, but if they do, I'll take Raonic in 5, but wouldn't be surprised at any outcome, except for a straight sets win by either player.

Wawrinka - Raonic QF: I think Wawrinka is due for a bad match, so he will probably lose this one. I don't want to pick against him though, so Wawrinka in 4. This will be another sign of Raonic's improved movement if he wins this one.

Murray's Quarter:

Isner will probably lose in the 3rd round to someone during an extended 5th set. But for the sake of fun predictions, I'll say he meets Murray in the 4th round.

Murray - Isner
: It's unlikely Isner wins a set. Still, the contrast in styles *might* make this a fun match, if Isner doesn't get broken too often.

Murray in 3.

Murray - Nishikori QF: Murray's superior serving should make the difference. I'll give Nishikori a set.

Murray in 4.

Djokovic - Nadal SF: Nadal is on an upswing, and I do think his shot making is almost back. Rooting for Nadal, but I think Djokovic takes this in 3. If Nadal is going to win a set, it has to be sets # 1 or 2, as I don't think he'll win set # 3 if he's down 2 sets.

If I think Nadal is on the upswing, shouldn't I give him a set? I would have if he'd been able to win a set recently against Murray or Nadal.

Murray - Wawrinka QF: Wawrinka will have had a tough ride, with his last 2 matches. Would love to see him pull this out, but I think Murray takes this in 5.

Djokovic - Murray Finals
: Murray has been inching closer. Djokovic still has the better serve.

But clay is the surface with the most breaks of serve.

Let's do this. Murray in 4! If Murray loses, please don't be in straight sets.

Murray also has to keep his 1st % up.

I still find both positive and negative with last year's 5 setter at the FO. I just don't like how Murry had to come back from down 2 sets. And, he was never in the 5th set.

I'm rooting for Nadal, Murray, or Wawrinka over Djokovic. From 2011 - 2013, I would have liked to see Djokovic win, but after that, just didn't care enough about him winning the FO anymore.

Last year's Men's Final was my favorite FO Final.

Women's Draw:

Serena's Quarter:

Serena - Azarenka QF: Other than Serena getting older, I just don't think there's one thing Azarenka does that's better than Serena. So if Serena has a solid serving day, she should win.

Serena in 3.

Kerber's Quarter:

Kerber could lose any match, she's so inconsistent.

I'll give her some respect though, and say she meets Bacsinszky in the QF.

Bacsinszky in 2. I like watching Kerber's shallow, wide returns.

Muguruza's Quarter:

I don't know how well Muguruza plays in clay.

I have no idea who's coming out of this quarter. I'll pick Kuznetsova.

Radwanska's Quarter:

Halep - Radwanska QF: Radwanska has a little more pop on her shots, when she hits winners.

Maybe that will give her the edge. Radwanska in 3.

Serena - Bacsinszky QF:

I might change my mind if I've seen Bacsinszky play prior to this match, in this tourney.

But have to go with Serena in 2 otherwise.

Kuznetsova - Radwanska QF:

Kuznetsova hasn't had a SF run in years. I don't think she will do it this time either, unfortunately.

Radwanska in 2.

Serena - Radwanska Finals:

Because this is on clay, I'll give Radwanska a much better chance.

If Serena tries to go for shots too early, and the errors pile up, she will lose.

If she's a little patient, she can turn this into a blowout.

I made some bold pics on the Men's, will stay safer here.

Serena in 2.

I see I overlooked Safarova and Kvitova as players who could have made deep runs. Safarova more likely than Kvitova.

Oh well.

Win or lose today, it's nice to see that Sock is getting himself into good shape. It was really holding him back for the past couple of years, IMO.

Of course, I'll be a little sad if he loses, because his style is so suited for clay. That forehand just explodes off the court.

Yeah, this would have been a good match to watch. It's not on TC right now either.

Is there any plans for the FO to get a retractable roof in the near future to join the other 3 GS events? It is now the only GS event where we have to worry about the entire day being a wash out
