And so is Aguero and Mascherano too. Retiring.

Wow one missed penalty kick and the whole team and generation of Argentine football implodes.

P.S. Messi looked like he needed to be placed on suicide watch at the end of that game. Never have I seen an athlete that devastated. Sports is a cruel world at times.

It has nothing to do with this game. It is something with the Argentina football federation.

Probably has to do with both... if they would have won the game I doubt anyone would have announced their retirement.

For several of the players this is 3-5 Finals they have lost and the pressure is continuing to mount to bring home a title.

Higuain may not be allowed to return to Argentina after his last missed goal opportunity in the Copa... this makes 3 straight finals for him... after World Cup miss he already received a lot of criticism here.

To retire during the middle of WC qualifying just seems odd to me especially considering most of those guys are not even 30 yet. Masacherno is the only one I truly understand

Yeah... he made comments prior, so would not surprise me if his retirement stays... I also think Tata Martino could be asked to step down.

The Higuain early missed goal I think really deflated the team... a "here we go again" situation in which the team already placed a lot of pressure on themselves and it was heightened afterwards. No one feels the pressure more than Messi and I think his retirement may be permanent as a result.

Argentina has 0 goals in the last 4 Finals they have played (3 Copa finals and World Cup final).
