The Sea Dogs beat the Armada 2-0 tonight to take a 3-0 lead in the Q finals. Callum Booth gets his 2nd straight shutout and Thomas Chabot gets 36:31 of ice time in the closest game of the series.

The Sea Dogs complete a surprising sweep of the Armada with a 5-1 win.

To a chorus of boos in his home province, Thomas Chabot was named MVP of the QMJHL playoffs.

The Sea Dogs will now play the host Windsor Spitfires in the opening game of the 2017 Memorial Cup.

Man, what a junior dynasty the Sea Dogs franchise has become. Congrats julian.

They epitomize the cyclical nature of the Q. They always seem to be either really good or really bad. In the 6 seasons in which they did not at least advance to the Final 4, they have won a combined total of 1 playoff game.

WHL closed out in overtime tonight

Memorial Cup field is set - Windsor (host), Seattle (WHL), Erie (OHL), Saint John (QMJHL).
Tournament starts Fri May 19th on @Sportsnet.

Congrats to the T-Birds for winning their first WHL Championship and earning their first trip to the Memorial Cup. I'm sure many eyes from the Wet Coast will be watching to see how Barzal performs in Windsor.

So it was pointed out to me today that all 3 league champions this year are "outsiders" of sorts.

The Ontario champs are from PA.

The Quebec champs are from NB.

The WHL champs also come from the US but at least Seattle is in the west, which I guess makes the WHL the most appropriately named league. But considering WHL is part of the Canadian Hockey League, Seattle still gets "outsider" status.

Even the host team is immortalized as "south Detroit" by Journey :D

Well that opening game could have gone better. Hopefully the Sea Dogs can build off of that late push and carry it over to the next game.

Well the Sea Dogs appear to be in over their heads at the Memorial Cup. They haven't seen competition anything close to this in the Q.

The good news is if they win tomorrow they are in the semis with a bit of momentum and they'll be playing a team that had just lost its first game of the tournament along with a chance for a bye to the finals.

It's really looking like it will be an all OHL final though.

I'm am old curmudgeon, but I still have a real issue with a team that gets eliminated in the first round of their league playoffs having a chance to win the Memorial Cup.

I never used to mind since it seemed like the host losing out early was pretty rare and a host not winning its league usually didn't perform well in the Memorial Cup anyway, but it seems like a lot of hosts in recent years have been losing early in the playoffs and then doing better in the Memorial Cup as well, so I have also started to dislike the format. I know it's probably not going to change, the Memorial Cup has become too much of a cash cow for the CHL, but I think a 3 team champions only tournament with a double round robin (to maintain the 6 round robin games) would be better, with the semi-final acting as the tiebreaker does now, and just the top 2 playing a single game championship if the semifinal is not needed.
