I thought the Bills picked 3 fairly safe players early on and threw away some of their late round picks. (Peterman seems like an obviously bad fit for example)

I dont know enough about the situation to know if they needed a new GM but being in the same division as the Patriots has to be a grinder for all 3 of those teams. There are no lucky years where you can back into the playoffs. You have to earn every bit of it.

I really don't understand all the hub bub with the Bears. They gave up a 3rd and a 4th to make sure they got their guy. None of you know for certain that there wasn't other teams lobbying to trade up to get him. They then recovered the 4th by trading down 9 spots in the second. So a 3rd, and a 3rd next year for what they believe is the future at QB? BFD. I sure wish they would've done the exact same thing in 2014 to ensure they got Aaron Donald, who went one spot ahead of them, and whom they were targeting, but sat on their hands in hopes he'd fall to em'.
I've been wrong before and will be wrong again, but I just think Trubisky would have been a reach at 3 and I dont believe any other team was willing to give up what it would have taken to hump the Bears. Now add in 3 of the 5 came from NON FBS schools. I just dont like their draft one iota.

The rest of the draft, I can understand, but every year now, it seems they say the QBs suck, but then at draft time they are taken in the top 5. This was allegedly the worst QB class in forever and 3 still went in the top 12.

The Draft was certainly underwhelming from an armchair GM's perspective, i.e. the fans, but that doesn't really mean much. The picks are risky no doubt, though I don't think they're too far out there. Shaheen was on plenty mock boards, most I saw had him going in the 2nd or 3rd. Dude is a physical freak with a big upside.

If Trubisky ends up a franchise-caliber QB and Shaheen can be a beast at TE, I will say this draft was a success. I will wait and see before passing too much judgment, and I give them the benefit of the doubt, as last year's draft may have been the best for the Bears in 30 years.

You are right that IF Trubisky becomes a franchise QB this will be a good draft, but again I just dont think the trade was necessary. By tge way, I know the players haven't stepped on the field yet, but all the talent pundits agree with what I'm saying.

Well, let's be honest, YOU agree with what THEY are saying.

Niners have stated that a total of 6 teams were vying to trade up for that No. 2 spot.

You have to believe at least one of those besides the Bears were going for Trubisky. No one will ever know if he would've fell to Chicago at 3.

My question. Why the day AFTER the draft.
Bills dismiss GM Whaley amid playoff drought

My guess is they didnt want the Dolphins or Jets hire him to get inside info for the draft. Now do I totally disagree no. I think Whaley did a good job in bringing in talented players to this team. Who knows how much he had to do with EJ and Rex Ryan there are conflicting reports about both. That being said even if he was totally with it but he always seemed like he had no idea what was going on with the team. Also he seemed to always going with his best interests and not the interests of the team. So I had a problem with his behind the scenes actions more so then he skills as a talent evaluater. Also he was hired before Pegula bought the team so Whaley wasnt his guy and it seemed like he wanted him fired from the beginning. If only they would fire Russ Brandon.

Bills dismiss GM Whaley amid playoff drought

As the resident Bills fan, allow me to explain as much as I can:

Last season, Whaley (and Rex) was on the hot seat. It was playoff or bust. The Pegulas let go Rex before the final game and decided to let Whaley (and the entire scout team) go AFTER the draft. They should have done this sooner. The Bills are always late to the party. Perhaps they figured their scouting department has been researching guys for the past year and a half, and it would be too late to fire Whaley and his team in December and January.

Makes sense I guess, just its not the norm so it seems odd.

You have to wait until after the draft if you are going to clean house because you need scouts in place to evaluate players all college season and help you select. This isn't unusual.
I'd expect this from a crappy organization like the Philadelphia Eagles... :D

Whaley was on head coach #3. Eventually it has to come down to the GM.

The timing is curious though.

When I got on Twitter this morning, this was one of the first tweets I read;

My first thought was "The HC... giving a Vote of Confidence?"

Knew Whaley was screwed.

So you can prep for the next draft. This was always a lame duck offseason. I'd wager the HC has more sway over this particular draft than he will the next few, not Whaley.

This exactly. The lame duck offseason for Whaley and his staff was still a resume builder, so they had to put in their best efforts. Certainly can't expect a lame duck GM to trade for a future 1st like the Bills did, so McDermott had a LOT of say in those picks and trades.

It wouldn't be ideal to throw out all of your scouting on this draft class (years worth) to try to reassemble a GM staff and scouts to build a new draft board.

As for Whaley, he needed to go. His drafts were OK, but he was at odds with every head coach he worked with, and these are guys HE brought in (including McDermott). He wanted to dump Tyrod, his handling of RFAs the past 2 years was very unpopular, etc.

That Peterman pick seemed more about value than fit. Maybe he's trade bait? I'm still surprised they didn't make a move for Chad Kelly; they could easily have acquired a 7th round pick. The other picks were need based though, 2 guys to compete for Will LB (as well as special teams). They seemed to squander some picks trading up to get Dawkins, as most have him targeted for G when the Bills really need a RT.

Folks are acting like it's the second-coming of the Herschel Walker deal.

It's not.
The Reggie Bush trade was bigger, and none of the picks NO sent to Washington turned into anything...

I trust that the Browns were talking to the Niners on a 12 for 2 deal. I can't imagine the Niners would have done that without including the Browns #1 in '18. A similar trade with the Browns would not have gotten it done. But maybe the Browns were offering their 2 in '17 plus some mids. But that would have meant that Niners would not have gotten Thomas, and dealing with Chicago got them bulk AND the guy they wanted.

Without reading every post I suspect this decision was made pre-draft. In the least two years the Bills lost to the Patriots Hogan, Gilmore, Gillislle. You made your in conference rival stronger because you poorly managed the finances of the team
