1) The Chiefs spending two #1 picks to trade up for Mahomes condemns them from winning any championship in the near future. Alex Smith is probably not very happy this week.

2) The Panthers snagging CMac and Curtis Samuels - really caught my eye. I had made the point to get the full value of CMac - you had to build and offense around him and that presented the problem of having someone around to step in if he gets injured. Not exactly what the Panthers did here, because CMac and start at the TB and Samuels in the slot, but I think they will be crazy hard to defend.

3) This Bronco draft was not a BPA draft - it was a roster shoring up draft. The kind you're not supposed to have (exceptions to every rule - may apply here).

4) After watching football since the 50s - I would have to say when everyone is stocking up with athletes to defend the pass - it is a good time be very good at running the football. I'd love to see the Broncos impose their will on teams - while the baby Qbs grow up (and have to brave fewer passing situations).

5) John Lynch - proves himself ready for the big leagues - with a fleecing of the Bears for 3 middle round picks - ending up with the player he wanted anyway one slot down. Also - I think R. Foster will work out for the 9ers too.

6) McCaffrey and Fournette - skipped the bowl games and went extra high in the draft - so it paid off for them. Bowl games were the obvious loser in the top picks.

7) The Texans - see Chiefs - safer pick - less upside - equally stupid.

The first round was all about need. Almost all teams drafted for need. When Ross and Davis go top 10 that is need .

What the Pats did was interesting

1st round Cooks (get a 2 time 1K yard Wr)
2nd round Ealy (get a known DE who has as much potential as any 2nd round DE. See Super Bowl)
3rd round Rivers DE (someone Denver was looking at)
3rd round Garcia (someone Denver was looking at)
4th round draft pick
5th round Mike Gilispe I'll take him over any 5th round RB
6th round draft pick

NE used draft picks to bring in proven NFL talent.

This draft may boil down to Reuben Foster vs Garrett Bolles . Hopefully both do well and have very good NFL careers.

As "meh" as I was about our draft only really liking about 4 guys (and I may like Kelly more than Bolles), I REALLY LOVE the fact that nobody else in the AFCW got remarkably better.

In fact, I LOVE that a few of them mortgaged their future for a questionable draft choice.

And since I live in Houston, I'm throwing them in the mix. Love the taste of Texan fan's tears.

7) The Texans - see Chiefs - safer pick - less upside - equally stupid.

1) That Chiefs team lost the most front 7 snaps out of anybody last year and was 5th overall in DVOA (18.7%). The Broncos in 2015 were 6th (16.3%) for reference. I wouldn't count your chickens there; seems like a hot take to me. Not saying it'll happen but this seems presumptuous. If a low 1st and 3rd sink a team, that team is just bad at drafting full stop. Two 2nds did not even make a noticeable dent in the talent pool the last time they traded picks for a QB.

2) This caught my eye as well. The WR corp in Carolina just isn't very good (Benjamin's reputation still exceeds his actual value and Funchess is a nothing) and they added two guys that can contribute there. But interestingly they can also reinforce the RB position. Some very interesting versatility. If I roll out of bed and bother to get Sunday Ticket, I think I'll be watching a lot of the Panthers to watch how they use these two.

3) Pleading the 5th

4) Indeed it is- all the more worthwhile to draft one of these safeties high if you can get them. They've sort have become the swiss army knife of the NFL with their ability to move between CB, LB, and S. It's usually not a substitute for a true ILB, but with how dominant the passing game is via the rules NFL teams aren't left many choices if they want to stop offenses. Stop the pass, then stop the run later. Chaps my gums to say that, but it rings true.

5) He definitely put a neon sign saying "I am not Matt Millen" with that move. Pretty shrewd and shows the desperation of the Bears for a guy I am not convinced teams were trading up for; and even if they were, they signed Glennon for a reason, no?

6) Death to bowl games

7) Reactionary trade, wrong QB for them, and have nobody really blocking a unrefined player. Classic panic move- nothing calculated about it. Settling for at minimum their QB2 (we know Mahomes was rated above Watson for Houston) and trading up for it would leave a bad taste in my mouth if I were a Texans fan.

I would add in Lamp and Jarrad Davis. Those guys were worthy of consideration. Garcia is still a question mark to me as is Paradis' injury. Lamp could've filled both those voids. Hell, Lamp might end up being a better LT despite his short arms. Elway said it was Bolles or bust, or something to that effect? That's a pretty dumb philosophy going into the draft. He was also a little bit rummy when he couldn't remember who he drafted in the 2nd. WTF is going on in that draft room. Elway has shown pure genius when building this team through FA. But his ability to identify offensive talent through the draft has been abysmal. He also has dropped the ball on when to extend players contracts before they price themselves out of the market. If not for Harris willing to take a severe hometown discount, we probably would've lost him too. Think about that. You could add Wolfe into those parameters too. That would've been devastating to our defense.

Also, with the Jets basically willing to give Richardson away, why aren't we in the discussion? He would be a day one starter, probably a pro bowler, and would fill the biggest weakness on our D. I understand he's probably a one year rental, so what? He would solidify our Defense into instant contender again. Isn't that the goal? To contend?

I wouldn't fault Elway for Richardson. No team wanted him correct? There must be another backstory no one knows.

Pretty sure he was the go going 120 mph on the highway with a passenger in the car. Has a history.Headache of a player off the field.

This is his contract year. I don't think he will be a problem. Sometimes a knucklehead like that needs a change of venue

We have a team for that - it's called the Bengals. They want to be the new Raiders in that regard.

I love Moneyball within the context of the NFL Draft

So the Browns now have nine players — Corey Coleman, Shon Coleman, DeShone Kizer, Cody Kessler, Derrick Kindred, Spencer Drango, Ricardo Louis, Jordan Payton, Jabrill Peppers — as well as the Texans’ first-round pick next year and the Eagles’ second-round pick next year, all for trading the opportunity to choose Wentz.

If Wentz turns into a franchise QB , I'd take the QB any day but odds are probably with the Browns.

The argument would be that they never had a chance to win a championship with Alex Smith unless he had an elite (#1 overall) defense. I'm not a huge fan of the argument but I do think there is enough evidence to back that up. I do think people will mention KC as a common 'step back' team next year but the reality is that the sample size of an NFL season is so small that anything could happen.

The really big thing in the AFC West, imo, was the Chargers going all-in on offense. Mike Williams, Forrest Lamp and Dan Feeney is an instant upgrade for any team and the Chargers porcelain offense was already potent before those upgrades. I think its going to be really interesting to see if their offense is good enough to offset their defense. There might be some arena league games with the Chargers.

Broncos did some sound decisions and it looked like they had a heavy emphasis on special teams.

The Raiders went all-in on defense which makes perfect sense but I didnt like the players the Raiders drafted. That said, its hard to say they drafted the wrong guys when the division has been drafting really well the past few years. I think their strategy makes more sense than the Chargers and arguably the Chiefs but the Chiefs were 100% committed to getting a QB this year and it showed.

I Hey Ming. I will say I agree with 1,3,4,5 for sure. Not sure Mac and Sam landed in best place though. Words out on Cam now. His confidence, his accuracy even on swing routes to rbs is inconsistent and teams are not that worried of him beating them with his arm , especially with pressure. I think teams with good front 7 and physical Dbs will take away a lot of things those two (Mac & Sam excel at. I would rather see either go to offense where they have to respect the Qb /wr more.Giants,Saints,etc. Thank God not Raiders either or even Chargers with Rivers for that matter. Still think, although I'm basically only one in world, that Fournette is not going to live up to hype. That said, I also didn't get one draft pick right either. :)
