It's been about 5 months since I stocked my chest freezer with my White Tail... I'm down to 3 packs of sausages. Blazed through all my backstrap & loins in a matter of weeks.

Now it's time to start stockin up with fish!

Really looking forward to my fishing trip this year, we're going to some remote cabin in Canada. I'm going to engorge on walleye.

Damn man, a deer will last me almost a year. Mix in a little elk and my freezer stays pretty stocked. You do your own sausage or take it somewhere?

My diet the last 5 months has consisted of at least 3-4 days per week of a venison-based dinner lol. And I cook for my wife & I.

Most years I do sausages myself... About a 40% gain with the pork fat & additives. But I was too busy last year so I took it to a butcher. I was lucky enough to get a weekend to go hunt in the first place.

Played golf last night with a fellow who is the caretaker on a retirement farm for horses. Aside from the horses, there's 700+ acres of rolling hills and open fields. He said nobody was hunting this spring and that the place is over-run with toms so I should come hunt the farm.

I'm too stoked. The bird I shot a couple of years ago was one from his farm.

...nothing's ever certain but my chances are really good~ Can't wait!

Well what was supposed to be a slam dunk turned out to be a weeks long saga.

Those storms never materialized. At midnight there was still a big blob coming at us so I slept in and figured I'd troll the woods after fly-down. The entire morning was dry and when I got to the fields, the big boy was already in the center surrounded by hens and three two year olds. I glassed 'em and tried to outflank them through the wood but no dice, they were on the move and calling them back was futile.

They all marched straight past where I was going to set up. Oh well, at least my season wasn't over....

I hunted 4 more times getting up at 3 am without getting a glimpse of a shootable bird. Then I switched back to another parcel of the property where I saw a pair of toms after one of my skunkings. I found a great confluence of fields and logging roads and set up in the road and spill out to the field. I considered clearing a shooting hole out into the field behind me but didn't have the gear.....figured the birds would be roosted down the lee side of the hill and come up through the open road.

Went in at 4 am and sat down. HOLY SHIT! The first gobble was less than 75yds away and was followed instantly by three more birds in close proximity. The four of them barked and barked for 10 minutes. Then I yelped quietly and they all thundered back. It was so loud and I was sure it was gonna finally happen. They all pitched out into the field behind me and came along the edge toward me but they'd have to come into my decoy for me to get a shot....no dice. They had a hen with them an she led 'em out into the open fields. They fucked with me but I couldn't get one to break....fuckers just made me late for work. On the way home they were still just in a small field down the hill and I stopped to chat with a local cop who was stopped watching them. I told him I was set up on them that am. We agreed they were two year olds. Not huge but mature and would likely circle back up the hill to roost near the same spot again. Well Saturday would be a sure thing. All I needed to do was get a gobbler shaker call 'cause mine rotted out...got the last one they had a Dick's. I planned on being #5 when the 4 of them traded gobbles and they'd HAVE to check out the new guy. I made a set up that covered the field and roads and went in at 4 am again and sat down. This had to be quick 'cause we had heavy rain coming in two hours.

Nothing. Silence. No birds at all. I was no longer getting frustrated, I was furiously frustrated....fuck. Well I only got two hours to hunt so I picked up and headed over to the first fields to see if they had gone there. Getting out of the truck I heard a gobble up in the upper field. That turned out to be very fortunate because it let me make the sneak all the way up the hill without revealing myself with calling.

I had no idea if it was a tom or one of the jakes that's been in that field but nothing had been coming to hen calls so I was glad to have the gobble shaker. I poked my head around the stone wall near the road break they walk through and there was a bird just 40 yds away. I hoped I didn't get busted and tossed my dekes out quick and jumped behind a tree near the wall. One gobble shake and GOBBLE GOBBLE a big double hit me and he came running. Holy shit it was the big boy all strutted out and spinning down the hill right to the break in the wall 20ft from me! I gave another gobble and he broke into a trot. He was gonna kick someone's ass!

He cleared the break at 20ft away, stopped, stuck his neck out and promptly died....boom, the red dot sight on my 12ga made it easy. Whew, 15 minutes passed between when I parked my truck and he was down. Just a glorious three year old. 22.2Lbs, 1" spur and one broke off, 10 inch beard. An epic tale of perseverance!

I dressed him out, made a beard and fan tail wall mount and a necklace out of the one long spur. He was too big and dominant to not make full use of him.

Got 3 weeks until Ducks and Geese open, ( I didn't go out for early season) Geese have been flying over the practice field and the house pretty much every day, bunching up and getting ready for their move south....

Of course the first time they hear the first shot, they wont be flying this low again the rest of the year...
