McCarron contract status may be unknown until 2018

Somehow I missed this..... I never realized that the Bengals view McCarron as a guy that will be a restricted free agent after the season. They'd love to keep him on the roster and then get a crappy draft pick for a mid-round tender. It's the Bengal way. Hell, maybe they'll give him a high tender and hold him hostage.... Poor kid won't see the field until he's 30.

they won't resign him if someone makes him a generous offer.

that's my guess.

Of course not..... They'll take the 5th round pick.... to go along with their multiple 4th round picks that they get because they don't sign their own. Hobs will praise them for their brilliance.

Well, you never want to start the asking price low and let them negotiate you down to something worse. See how desperate teams get during the draft. 2nd is good, but I am thinking they are holding that 1st rounder as leverage to get a 2nd rounder and another conditional pick that can be as high as another 2nd - 4th depending on performance.

that's right. just because they are asking for a first doesn't mean they won't go for an amenable deal.

saying it has to be a first means somewhere between picks 1-32

he's clearly not worth anything from picks 1-10, so we can forget about that.
but what about one of the picks from 33-40? that's not a first round pick, but it's not that far off.

McCarron played well in limited action but that was with Green, Eifert, Marvin Jones, Sanu, and Bernard at the skill positions. I can't see what he did to drastically raise his stock from when he was a late Rd draft pick to being worth a 1st rder and a big contract.
If a team like the Texans doesn't like any of the QBs on the board when they pick in the 1st Rd I can see them trading a couple mid Rd picks to see what AJ has as a one year rental.
Like Crash said hopefully this is just a starting point in negotiations and they get something more for him than a comp pick

Why start with a 2nd round pick and let teams talk them down. Start the bid high, settle for a 2nd if another conditional pick is thrown in. Man. Don't you guys know how to negotiate? Besides, we may have him for another year beyond this anyways, which makes the offer for him need to be more attractive, because you are getting two years of control not just one. If no one is willing to give us crap, and we have him for two more years, yeah for us.

Top 10 second round pick, plus a 4th.

Or Top 10 second round pick this year with a conditional pick for 2018 determined by performance, as low as 4th but could be as high as another 2nd round pick if he helps his top 10 picking team to the playoffs.

I'd hate to give AJ to Cleveland but if they are desperate and make a deal that can't be turned down, so be it.

Other options for McCarron include:

Jets
49ers

That's really it, in my opinion. Cleveland is the most logical partner due to the aforementioned familiarity and the future assets they hold. They currently have 2 1st round and 3 second round picks in the 2018 Draft.

I might turn into a Browns fan if McCarron ends up with them. Dead serious.

Geez.... I like McCarron about as much as anyone, but don't you think this is a little extreme?

Enjoy the lake!

I agree on staying out of interdivisonal trades if they think McCarron's a star but the Pats traded Bledsoe and the Eagles traded McNabb within the division. If the Browns offer the best deal I say take it .

I would like to watch some of his games. don't know if that would make me a browns fan though.

I'm more of an NFL fan, even though I think it's starting to go the way of sports entertainment rather than a true 100% sport.

So if the Browns draft a QB that acts and plays like a winner, you'll be a fan of the Browns?

The Patriots have a guy that acts and plays like a winner. You on that bandwagon?

I get the feeling that the Bengals and their fans value AJ McCarron way more than 31 other teams do.

Meh, there are a lot of really shitty starters in the NFL. McCarron has looked decent when he's had his chances. He's probably a 'starter,' and while that's not saying a bunch, teams pay out the ass for starting QBs
