Report: Ilya Kovalchuk wants to return to NHL (with Devils or not)

Looks like he wants back into the NHL. Have to admit that there were some seriously hurt feelings when he left. That was a tough 13 months (Parise, Kovy, Clarkson)..

However, the Devils did dodge a serious bullet by unloading his initial contract..

Apparently if he signs with the Devils there is no need for the other teams to approve. If he goes to another team, all 30 need to approve him.. Devils hold all the chips. Worst case and he doesn't want to play here, they can orchestrate a sign and trade..

yeah i was angry at first about him leaving but honestly without parise staying it wasn't worth having him. you really needed that 1-2 punch for the team to be successful.

just think that if he comes back this summer and signs with us we would be getting the same kovalchuk probably that we would've had at this point if he never left. lol so if you think hes coming back and has nothing left in the tank just imagine having him for another 8 years with nothing in the tank lol

Nobody is on Jagr's level but seeing what Jagr is doing means age is less significant.

Curious what kind of salary he'd command? Does he get something close to what Radulov did this year? Does he come cheaper since he's older and been gone 4 years?

Kovy has that shot though...that ridiculous snipe of a shot. If he didn't come at a high price, I'd gladly welcome him back. We still have plenty of cap space to continue retooling plus good positioning in this year's draft. Not to mention him having a positive impact on guys we currently have, as he can be one of those guys that makes others around him better (See: 2012 cup run although Parise had a big hand in that too). Could always sign a shorter term deal and see how it goes.

Plus, and this is just me looking at my own interests, I can finally bring out his jersey that I bought (and haven't worn at all) right before he "retired".

It's a win, win...win!

With Jagr, he is built like a tree. He has the skill, but he is also very difficult to move. He uses his size and reach and can still thread the pass or shoot the puck. So even though he might be slowing down, he is still strong as hell and difficult to defend.

Yea I got my Kovy jersey too. I still remember that day like yesterday. I was pissed off. Still does not add up to me. I know he is still building his house in NJ. Really wonder if there was "something else" that made him go back to Russia.

In the end he screwed himself as much as anyone. Thought he was signing a massive contract in Russia but the ruble deteriorated so much it was literally worth about 10% in real (ie US$) money than when he signed.

Shero confirmed that kovy definitely wants back in the NHL and gave his agent permission to speak to teams. I don't think it means he won't definitely not play here because hey if the devils don't like what the team is offering them then they can say screw.

Either way it's a win win for us

A lot to take in here. So he can't sign until July 1 and it would most likely be a sign and trade. That means any picks would be for 2018 and beyond.

As you said Cup and he mentions it below, this doesn't mean he won't play in NJ. Unless they're blown away by a trade though I would hang on to him. He's an "unknown" so I doubt teams will give much for him. But if we move him for say a 2nd and 3rd and he puts up 25 goals we just got crushed. Unless a first is involved or immediate help on the blue line I don't trade him.

Good assets is the key here, can't give him away. He's a potential 25+ goal guy, let someone overpay for him otherwise keep him.

I really hope this isn't just for a 2nd or 3rd like you said.

First off any picks in this deal will be for 2018. Chances are he's going to a contender so that pick will be in the 20s. I want a pick and player in return. Hall is three years from ufa. Have to get him help now

Teams that want kovy are in a win now mode. The devils aren't so that just gives us even more leverage. If they don't want to pay the price for a 25g 50pt player then they can wait another year when he's 35 and hopefully their window is still open.

Yes kovy is a free asset but that doesn't mean he should be cheap. We aren't going to help your team win the cup if you aren't going to help us get better too

Totally agree. Need immediate return. Find a contender with D to spare in need offense.
