My boy Slaton is spot on with comparing WVU to Oregon. Oregon has an outstanding AD, one I was hoping would return to his alma mater. One who is directly responsible for the rise of the overall success of its athletic programs.

Forbes wrote an article about Rob Mullens and the outstanding job he's done.

Like Slaton pointed out, Maryland has a sugar daddy... yet they haven't enjoyed success similar to Oregon.

Mullens has created an identity based on three pillars. Entreprenueruial Forethought, Pioneering Innovation and Disciplined Overachievement.

Under Coach Chip Kelly, the football staff had no turn over for 4 straight years!

Oregon is the perfect example of a school lead by outstanding people who hire excellent personnel to maintain and improve on their mojo.

Wish we had Rob Mullens...

Criteria: Revenue Sustainable Business Plan(Revenue Streams) , Athlete Graduation Rate, Athletic Facilities Development Plan, Alumni Influence, Conference Stature, Compliance, Marketing, Overall Program success ie wins/losses. Defining a Culture, setting the standard..

Lets take your criteria and rate Lyons

Athletic Graduation Rate- 2nd best for WVU since 1995 Grade A
Improved since Luck
NCAA Releases Graduation Rates - WVU Athletics

Athletic Facilities Development plan- Stansbury hall project is under Lyons. Football Stadium and Coliseum are progressing. Following through with Lucks plan. Has not advertised a plan for the future. Not to say that he does not have plans that he has not put out there.

I give him a B- on this pending more information

Alumni Influence- Cant find anything on the Mountaineer Athletic club re donation levels since Shane took over. Donation amounts are significant.
No grade pending more information.

Conference Stature- Competitive in major sports. I think that we are well represented in the conference. Luck has much to do with this but Shane has not screwed it up.
Grade B+

Compliance- No violations during his tenure and self reported prior violations that he found.

Grade A+

Marketing- Rising attendance for most of our programs in the face of declining attendance elsewhere.

Grade A

Overall program success- Rifle champ, first girls soccer final, top 25 in football and basketball. Ranked in Baseball. Across the board, I cannot find another year that we have been better.

Grade A

Big 12: Despite missing the College Football Playoff again, the Big 12 increased crowds by 1 percent to 57,238, ending three straight years of declining attendance. Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and West Virginia were up. Baylor was down only 1 percent after Art Briles' firing. Eighteen Group of Five teams drew more fans than Kansas (25,828), which finished last among Power Five schools.

WVU basketball attendance strong this season

Defining a Culture- Slaton, I really do not understand what the AD does here. Coaches have defined the culture in their sports. Air Raid, Press Virginia show culture, but I can't give the AD credit for this.

Grade- none pending further definition of the category

Setting the standard- Slaton give me some objective criteria to rate this one.

Let me add Coaches contracts to the list: Specifically in Football, our assistant coach pay rate is very low and while he retained Holgerson, he made statements during the time frame that made Holgs job more difficult and probably caused some assistants to take other jobs.

Grade C+

After doing research, I would give Shane a B+ for his performance so far. The more research I do, the better Shane looks.

Conference Stature- Competitive in major sports. I think that we are well represented in the conference. Luck has much to do with this but Shane has not screwed it up. I guess I could have been more clear. Luck was a player in the conference..hence being the first on the Committee to determine who played for the NC ..and as we all know led him to the number 2 position in the NCAA. I don't perceive him having the same clout...we will see how that plays out as time goes on but Luck was a player from the get go..the entire league saw him as a visionary.

Marketing- Rising attendance for most of our programs in the face of declining attendance elsewhere.

I guess what I was driving to was how is he making the fan experience better...we have all talked about this topic before...King Ollie says well...LETS SELL BEER! LOL!.....that helped as well as a new plan to improve concessions at the Coliseum and as my boy BBW has posted a pic of the new additions at the Mountaineer Field...What's Shane's plan?

Defining a Culture- Slaton, I really do not understand what the AD does here. Coaches have defined the culture in their sports. Air Raid, Press Virginia show culture, but I can't give the AD credit for this.

I totally disagree,
Coaches define an identity...AD's define what the CULTURE is going to be..so far all Shane has done is try to burn down the Football Program by being indecisive!

Go back further to DADS favorite AD FAST EDDIE P, he turned a blind eye to how Catlett and Rich recruited...got rid of Rifle and we know the rest of the story..

Setting the standard- See comments right above...and add to it what are the MAJOR sports programs playing for?...What resources is the AD willing to commit to get there....I find this one to be easiest of all.. Think what lore the first AD will live if EVER the school wins its first FOOTBALL or BASKETBALL title... something that clearly escaped FAST EDDIE P ...if I am the AD I bring all resources and then some to bear!

Not sure I ever hear Shane say we intend to focus on winning a NC...I heard KING OLLIE say it over and over again...and he did everything in his power to drive to it!

After doing research, I would give Shane a B+ for his performance so far. The more research I do, the better Shane looks

Don't settle for mediocrity my friend...it is all I personally see at this juncture...I said it before that we have seen what that gets you , it was FAST EDDIE P's profile..it ..if the wheel ain't broke why fix it mentality...it gets you a successful college football campaign every 5 or 6 years....Wv cannot afford to have that mindset in that job...The program needs a progressive "thought forward" person in that chair..

I may have misread the graduation rate data, but isn't this numbers compiled while Eddie P was at the helm?

The Stansbury Hall project was a University decision to build another building for the School of Business which is funded largely by a $10 million donation from husband and wife. They wanted to build it by the waterfront as they improve the overall image/scenery of the University.

I still do not see where/how No Balls is given credit for some/most of these items. Is it because he is keeping somebody else's vision in play?

Shane Lyons‏ @WVUADLyons
New concession areas and restrooms on the west side really starting to take shape at the stadium

WVU Football
I seen this on the same Twitter feed yesterday and pissed my pants. It showed being posted 1 day ago, yesterday. I hope it was actually taken over the weekend or after 5 because there is damn sure NOBODY working. Now that is a good example of mismanaging money, but since we make Big 12 money, it must be alright. Imagine if we were making SEC money.

I liked somebody's suggestion of placing the WV logo on the back side of the press box. Probably could be done if so much time wasn't wasted on the current project.

Does Shane have a 10 year plan?

Many of you guys believe he has no plan because he has not announced it yet. If he has a plan, why does he not make it public. Driving back from Morgantown, I saw the plan. Going back, I can see the vision Ollie had and how this plan may play out.

Our coliseum is outdated and needs replaced. MPS is 35 years old. There is no room to expand MPS and the hospital has run out of room to expand.

Ollie was instrumental in getting the state highway to put in a new exit o now I 79. The baseball park did not require this new access. While convenient, ithe exit was not really necessary to support for the ballpark.

This exit appears to be designed to handle heavy traffic coming from the west side of the road which is one of the largest parcels of unoccupied land in the Morgantown area.

My guess is that this area is where we will build the new ball arena and eventually the replacement for MPS.

Why would Lyons remain mum about the biggest expansion of facilities this century? He still has to purchase the land. Once you go public with the plan, it becomes more expensive to aqpcquire the land.

On day there will be a big I told you so on this board.

Yeah... this scenario is nothing more than an urban legend. There is no validity to it at all.

The exit off of 79 was the product of the TIF developmental plan presented to the state government. There is a major Fed Ex Distribution Center in the West Ridge Business Park and over 75% of the other pads in the park have been sold.

How much sense does it make to invest almost $75 million dollars in the construction projects at MPS and the Coliseum just to close both facilities for new ones?

My father recently told me of this news. It's obviously spreading around town again. It is no closer to reality in April of '17 as it was when it first surfaced nearly 10 years ago.

BTW, when it comes to purchasing property... WVU has no problem paying big bucks. They've bought a ton of Sunnyside, Evansdale and Suncrest land in the past 5 years.

Damn Another. You had me all psyched up for 2 new stadiums. Thought maybe you had Sunday dinner with your uncle No Ball, but the here comes BB shutting it down. Well, at least it will keep Poppy from bitching about building 2 more stadiums. Remember, Morgantown ain't no baseball town. That's what I've heard.

I would have given a slice of cake reward if it weren't for BB.

I hope you're right!...just my opinion...I don't think The Football Stadium needs to be replaced, it needs some redesign...especially in the upper deck...when the winds start howling especially in the corners no one wants to sit in those seats its as cold as all get out!..They need to close that end in and I think its problem solved...but I am no A & E...as far as the coliseum I don't know..I was just down in Columbia SC and they have new arena and I think the the Coliseum is better!..The biggest issue IMHO of the coliseum is the configuration of seating on the floor level and behind the baskets..

Slaton, I have been in quite a few college basketball arenas, and the coliseum is among the best!! The brand new arena they built here for OSU is a joke in comparison!!! As to the stadium, I agree totally, close the hospital end in completely into a horseshoe, building an off campus stadium is pure BS, we already have student attendance issues, let's not make it worse!!! If we are going to replace facilities due to nothing but age........we are complete idiots!

I have sat in the upper deck during December games...it is no fun...and that is where the students are sitting...don't blame them for not showing up especially if the game is televised..but I am sure the dilemma is how many seats so they add?...not sure they could ever get 75,000 plus ever home game consistently ...and I am sure its what the School contemplates or it would have already been done. maybe they just make it an all suite complex and add maybe a couple of restaurants ..eat and watch the game...Hey Shane..there's a marketing idea for you! and its yours for free!

When the concourse remodel was first talked about, that was my first thought, instead of widening the West concourse and making the hill unstable, make the North end into a destination!! I have worn my hunting clothes to quite a few games!!

Funny stuff!! Please look at the photo I provided above and give me one reason the hill has. Even made unstable.

This should be good...
