I'm not familiar with other teams rosters but at USC there's always a player or two that was recruited as one thing and turned out playing something else.
Some recent ones
Marquise Lee- was supposed to be a DB/CB but kept picking off and holding on to passes the coaches thought
he might make a good WR
Adoree- Some thought his primary spot should be on the offense

Darnold- was a QB and Linebacker in HS and was getting recruited mainly as a LB at USC till he told them he'd like to be a QB
I cant think of many right now on Oregon's current team but I know in the past a lot changed. Dion Jordan went from TE recruit to 3rd pick in the draft as a DE.

What about Armstead (sp?). USC wanted him on the O line. He did great at oregon on the D line.

Leach lucked into getting the one of the best quarterbacks in the country because he had his scholarship revoked at another school and was gifted a pretty solid core group of guys. After Falk leaves will be the real test if Leach can do his 9 win deal, we already know he doesn't know how to coach in bowl games or against FCS schools.
Leach's record at WSU:

1 - 8
6 - 7
3 - 9
9 - 4
8 - 5

Looks to me like he's doing ok with his recruits vs the players he had when he arrived at WSU.

I can't decide if DBs are WRs that can't catch or if WRs are DBs that can't tackle!

We seem to be producing a bunch of DBs in Texas that can't tackle! Or won't tackle! They whiff as often as a beginning golfer.

Washington and USC are the obvious favorites, but it's not much fun picking them.

Well
At Texas Tech
There were so many good players overlooked in the State of Texas that, if you knew what to look for and knew what you wanted, you could pick up some real gems and put a solid team together. That's what Leach did there.

I always wondered if he could do the same at WSU.

He has found "gems" but hasn't really done anything to deserve his salary. His first season at Washington State he had the best roster he has had yet and had 4 wins. It's great that we have become semi relevant but with his salary he shouldn't be able to be outcoached by every coach in the league outside of Helfrich.

Yeah, he has also had the most embarssing losses in program history as well as being one of the luckiest coaches in history. In the past two years he has beaten essentially 2 division 1 Pac 12 QB's in Rosen and Webb. Solomon was coming back from an injury and has faced every other school's backups. Oregon State was on their 4th string QB and nearly beat him.

Context.

Price was there like 10 years before his first double digit win season. The prior 8 years before Leach they had one season of 6-6 and all of the rest were abysmal.

It takes time to build a culture at smaller fringe schools.

Sure there are some head scratching games. Things haven't been perfect by any means.

Still, Falk is legit and everyone in the conference knows that. Had a 71% completion rate last year on 582 attempts. Looked to me like a couple of kids emerged to pickup where your departed WR studs from last season left off. It's fun to pick on some of those crazy losses like losing a bowl game you had a double digit lead in with 3 minutes to go, but everyone gets a bit tight before playing them knowing they are capable of having a solid game and beating anybody in the conference.

Price had several great seasons before the Rose Bowl year in 97. You can't even compare Price to Leach. You know I'm not a fan of Leach but I have to give him credit but he also needs to be held accountable for how embarrassing he had been as well with his not coaching games seriously. Which is my biggest issue is our athletic department is nearly bankrupt because of the Pac12 network doing crappy and Leach is being paid like he has accomplished anything.

WR is the biggest question mark going into this season as we only have 2 guys back who even made a dent last year. But the biggest positive is how great the offensive line is but he is still going to do that stupid ass line split that all of his proteges gave up on.

You keep bringing up the pay to performance ratio for Leach and I'm just not buying it.

From what I see he is around the 7th highest paid coach in the Pac. He's not making crazy money. They finished like 6th in the Pac or something? :noidea:

If he was at a bigger market school with easier inroads for bringing talent in I'd understand the frustration. This is Pullman WA. It takes a different kind of coach and a lot of patience to excel in those small market towns.

I honestly don't think Leach has hit a ceiling there. I do think this is a more or less make or break year given Falk's last season with the team, but he will be capable of reaching the top of the north in future years after he finds the next guy to run that offense. Might be a few years, but it will happen.

From what you see, ya because four other school's just had huge raises or new coaches coming in. When he got his extension two years ago he was third in the conference.

It does take a different coach because you have to find kids who fall in love with Pullman, which really isn't that hard. I think Leach is a fit in terms of personality but that same personality has cost him games. Since his first season he has had the talent to finish in the top 3 of the division but his personality and ego has cost him, so the money is a nice excuse, but the ego that comes with his personality is another big frustration.

That 7th place was from last year based on 2015/16 data. It was not current. I wanted to rank him for what he was paid comparatively last season for the results of last season. He makes under $3/m a year. I think it was like 2.7 or 2.8 last year? Might seem like a lot to you, but that's what it takes to not be the doormat of the division.

The guy loves it there. He walks to work everyday ffs. He sells life on the Palouse about as well as anyone else could. He runs something unique enough to attract a few star offensive players that might otherwise not be that interested in going there as well.

No one can argue he has made WSU football a lot more interesting as well as dangerous since coming there compared to the prior decade.

So when exactly is it a good time to make predictions?
There's a 3 day window sometime after spring practices wrap up and week 4.

I heard today that the PAC 12 South hasn't won the conference since they went to a CCG!

Never been to Pullman but Lubbock ain't really a destination place either.
