It blows my mind how sore I am the next day after playing a round of golf and I use a cart. Just FYI I jog 2 to 3 times a week. I weight train. I use bands to stretch. Former athlete. So going into this season of play I am doing the prep work to be in shape. After the round I ice my back and I use vitamins to reduce any inflamed body parts. So with that all said I played on Saturday 18 holes (shot best score of the foursome for the record haha) and on Sunday I was like man oh man I doubt I could play today if I had too.

So what's the deal is it just me....? I am going into my 5th month of playing serious golf (I have played for a few years here and there but just swinging with no clue about the game.)

Reason I need to figure this out is I am going on my first guys golf trip and we are going to be playing 6 rounds of golf in 4 days. It's in the month of May. The group does brackets and winning bracket members do get gifts and such. How do I train for this....

When I played ball I felt I could train all day every day. When it comes to golf I get my practice in at the range at least 2 times up to 3 times a week depending on weather this time of year. I work on chipping, putting, irons, driver. I figured getting in this practice time would build my endurance. But after 40 mins. I feel it. I am wondering if I mentally focus more on golf which drains me....?

I have gained a whole new respect level for how much golf the pros play and see the demands on the body...!!!

I'm 54 y/o and I'm usually not that sore after a round...I can't do 36 anymore (not b-t-b anyway, maybe an hour in between but that last 9 could be ugly).

You said it earlier, some of the fatigue comes from the mental grind. Imo the best cardio training for golf, is playing golf...I play (with a cart) mostly on Sat. with my normal group but now that we have more daylight, I walk 9 at this executive track by my job once or twice a week. I have a total gym (yeah we got sucked in by the Chuck Norris infomercial...lol) I use that about 3 times a week...nothing serious...basically stretch and toning work.

For you? Only 5 mos of really playing...imo that's part of your problem...just haven't played that many rounds so you haven't used those golf muscles that much.

Good luck on your trip.

Hi @ATL96Steeler thanks for the input. And with you putting your age now I feel even worse about my situation hahahah happy for you though. I didn't want to mention but I will I do have hip issues which cause muscle soreness in my lower back SI and L1 and L2 areas. But I was hoping now to use that as an excuse due to many people having injuries of some kind or another....

I hear what you said on the best way to get over the hump is to play more. I can see that. I thought the range would provide some of that training but I am seeing they are two different worlds. It's Mr. Norris to us who never bought his products hahahaha.

Yes, 5 months of serious golf i.e. seeing instructor several times, working on correct swing path, alignments, studying, on and on, on, on, on a lot to golf. (Not like in past having beers and swinging away.)

This longer light has me going to the range after work not playing rounds.... Looks like I need to adjust to what you are doing....not the walking part though. That's hardcore.

6 rounds of golf in 4 days would wear anybody out.

Don't even think about taking full practice swings.

I would also recommend you attempt to replicate atleast the same number of swings over 4 consecutive days a couple times before you go. I don't care if you just swing a club in your garage... just move those same golf muscles on multiple consecutive days. Then on the last day go and play a round and see what you have to modify in order to not hate the game.

Age...lol, I think NE Homer is older than me! I have a knee that has a mind of it's own sometimes, ironically the same knee I had a bad strain on when I was in HS. I have a desk job so I have more problems with it here in a flexed position for 8 hrs than I do playing golf...that's why I walk the executive course...it's relatively flat, and not very long.

Ranger Rick...been there, done that. LY I went to the range very little. I recently signed up a modified membership (not a full) at my home course. We get to play @ 11a and now 1p during daylight savings for $16...The point of this is we get 145 balls everyday with this membership. I go up there about 2-3 times a week.

For you, developing your swing, hitting a lot of balls is not a bad thing, but as you've already learned, it's nothing like playing golf. I used to hate playing 9 and from a competition standpoint I still much prefer 18 holes, but there's no substitute for playing and learning how to score.

I'm an 80s player that will post some rounds in the 90s, and a few in the 70s. Most of the guys I know that can post 70s most of the time (say 7 of 10 rds) are all playing at least 2-3 times a week.

Yeah, 56 and shoulder surgery on 1/4 but I have a mat and a pin and a full wedge in my front yard and I've been hitting wedges every day.....lots of 'em. Shoulder's just about %100. So what everyone else said DUB, a bunch of good advice but yeah, that's a lot of golf for anyone.

One thing though, the more you let the clubhead do the work, the less strain you endure.

@Roy Munson thanks for the input and thoughts on this. I agree that 6 rounds in 4 days will wear me out. But I am trying to build myself up in golf shape leading up to that event. As I know that will be a mountain challenge for me since I have never played that much in such a time period. I get sore after each round now and that is what I am trying to figure out....Why so sore and how to build to less sore after I play. But with each of your tips I can see some new things I can do to build my training differently.

Thanks again @ATL96Steeler and @NEhomer ... your ages have brought such wisdom. :)

basically, the golf swing is not a natural motion, so the muscles are not normally used in any other actions you do daily. Going out and swinging is like waking up some muscles that you have not touched in months. I expect the same when I go out later this week. I need to go to the range and hit some balls tonight to shake the rust off, but it will be ugly. I am already sore from the yardwork I have been putting in, so adding my golf muscles to the mix will only make it worse.

But it's a good, welcomed, kind of soreness. Bring it on.

Not the mention the back, which reminds you it's there when you are older.

One thing that has helped my back and midsection muscles is sitting on a balance ball to work. Those muscles never used to get any work while sitting in a chair 10 hours a day and now they have to keep me from falling over. Still doesn't cover the twisting motion, but if you're sitting on a ball while working, you tend to move around more and get some of that twisting motion. The first week I switched I had to alternate days between ball and chair. Now I only use the chair at night.

Also take 2 Aleve before the round and 1 after.

One thing I don't do enough of is stretching, but that would help as well.

We did a golf trip for about 12 yrs or so with 6 to 12 guys...the 1st 5 yrs or so, the format was practice rd on the 1st day, 36 tourney 2nd day, 36 tourney 3rd day, skins rd the final. It was tough, but you didn't start feeling it until the 2nd 18 on day 3.

After that we wised up a little...added a 5th day, cut the stroke play tourney to 54 holes (18 each day) and did team matchplay the last 36 holes. It was more fun.

You'll do fine...I like Roy's Aleve suggestion...lol.

We've always tried to do 1 scramble round in there to cut down on the overall strokes of those that either don't play that often or have really old or broken parts. My biggest problem throughout those years was keeping a pair of golf shoes together through 4-5 rounds.

I am going to be 60 this November and am fortunate that I can still play relatively pain free. Constant stretching of your "swing muscles" and working the core is a must. One thing that has benefited me greatly is having 2 herniated discs. This has forced me to a more fluid and rhythmic swing (Fred Couples) as opposed to always swing for the fences. Lose some distance but my accuracy is so much better.

We all had similar games...in the beginning...3 yrs, 3 different winners...then I went on a tear...in fact I won that last one and still have the trophy...lol

Putting out over 54 holes proved to be much harder than those guys thought. Just not used to having to put those little 2 footers in your weekend foursome.

The tourney/and trip overall was a blast. A few guys have called me recently about playing again...I'm traveling with another group now...2 days 54 holes...not as intense.

Shoes...really, got them soaked or what? Come to think of it, I did take two pair and rotated.

Brother!

60! Countdown! That's great.

Swing...yep...smooth is why Tiger is done at 40 and Freddie will be teeing it up at the Masters in a couple of weeks.

Good read and info fellas. 60....well damn...keep up the good work on the course! Good thing for me is I myself am not a power hitter so I am hoping my game will stand the test of time as well.

I am going to continue my workouts at the gym, fluid intake, vitamins, stretching, and core work. Now hitting the course back to back days will be the goal even if it is for 9 holes. I will get plenty of swings in practice so I'll work my way up to our golf outing. I also wanted to work my way out of just being sore the next day after a round... those pros putting in back to back to back to back rounds in high pressure tourneys is no joke!!

36 is a beastly number for anyone.

I'm 40 years old and I try to play as much golf as I can (I've got a 7- and a 5-year old, and a 5 month old, so my time is limited). Every year my buddies and I have a 36-hole tournament and by the middle of the second round, I'm starting to feel it. So, I found something that helps be get back in to the swing of things. I'll pull the cart right up close to the ball washer, step up on the bumper, put my dick in there and give it a few rigorous scrubs. That usually gives me enough of an adrenaline boost to get me through the last nine. Winning.
