I think most people saw this coming. The defense is getting younger.

Rey never lived up to his reputation in college - Seemed too slow to not be exposed in space or in the passing game. But he was a hard hitter and was decent as a role player.

Minter is the same exact player. I thought that was a strange signing at the time but it makes a bit more sense now.

Minter is a much better player and much better in coverage than Maualuga was.

I see him as a younger version of him.
He didn't have to cover to anyone athletic with the Cardinals because they had the best safety group in the league and Bucannon as a 210 lbs hybrid LBer at the other inside spot. He's physical against the run though and he's not a bad player.

He was ranked 3rd in the league for pass coverage as an ILB. He's much better in coverage than Maualuga ever was.

I'm one of those people who completely dismisses PFF but I take their rankings with a gray if salt. He had a converted saftey next to him at linebacker with Peterson shutting down half the girl at corner. Their safties are excellent. I question his coverage responsibilities in that defense. He's a healthy 26 yr old and his market value was one year 2 million garunteed. I don't think he's a great cover linebacker or a world beater but hopefully he proves me wrong.

I think he's about 100x better than Maualuga ever was.

Even by my standards this post had some horrific typos.

What is the market value of a 26 YO linebacker that doesn't rush the passer? It seems like the middle linebacker is somewhat of a dying position. When we were kids, it seemed like it was much more of a glam position. Now, I'm not sure I could name more than a handful of guys.

That said, I think the big issue with Minter is that he was a huge disappointment for most of his young career.... And he's played on some good D with some good coaching. Apparently he was much better this past year, but I guess AZ had already figured they'd move on.

I figure it's a safe pick-up. This linebacking corps goes as Tez goes.... If Tez is healthy and motivated, they would be fine with what they have (Vinny Rey and Vigil) Minter only makes that better.

Just for an idea of what a high end coverage LBer has gotten on the open market, Sean Lee of the Cowboys signed a 6 year/42 million dollar deal a few years back.

I wasn't insulting Minter by comparing him to Maualuga. He was a starter most of his career on some very good defenses. Not a playmaker but he's had a solid career. I see Minter as a similar player but it's possible I'm underrating him. I don't think he covers fast TEs down the seam or athletic RBs in space.

My take is one guy is 26 years old. The other guy is on the wrong side of 30. They are essentially the same type of player. A 2 down LB who can play the run, but can't be on the field during passing downs.

We need to get younger on defense. I'll take Minter over Maualuga and hope he improves.

I don't get this 2 down LB stuff. He may not be elite, but he's clearly not a liability.

Well, a lot of people live or die by PFF standings around here. I am not one, but I can tell you right now, he is not going to be worse than Maualuga in coverage, not even possible.

What I really liked about Minter more than anything, he played on very good defenses, and he was the QB of that Arizona defense. he called the plays, got guys into position, like a true MLB would. Burfict was/is having to do that for us because Maualuga couldn't do that. Me LB, me hit. Minter is much more cerebral than Maualuga ever could be.

It will be nice having more guys who can lead and get young guys lined up and on the correct assignments. It is only a 1 year deal but I anticipate an extension after the Bengals have had a chance to evaluate him ove rthe course of a season and see how he fits in with the team. Stepping stone contract. Besides, didn't we give Minter 4.5 million not 2 million?
