I'm headed to South bend in OCT for the matchup. Putting last season behind you. Whats the mindset of the fans?It looks like you guys had decent recruiting so bodies are coming. . Will you guys have any drop off at QB (besides experience?). Lots of new coaches, does Kelly get time for them to get their systems in place or does everyone work knowing his seat is really hot and they need to show the fans and alumni something positive? You obviously have way too much talent to be losing games like you did last year.
I expect (but anything can happen) the Trojans to get to South Bend still in the hunt for Jan Bowls. Where do you think the Irish will be by then?

Well let me answer in two parts.

What do I expect = Playoffs or bust. Brian Kelly's been given every chance to succeed here. He hasn't put back to back good seasons here. It's year 8. That's probably unrealistic but I think he's burned up his goodwill.

What do I think will happen = A moderate improvement. Not another 4-8 season, but a 7-5 6-6 season

The recruiting class was so-so but not terrible given the year we had. Next year's class is looking great if it holds. But I don't think the star power is there to match the tougher schedule than last year's.

8-4 is reasonable since Kelly averages winning 2 of 3. New QB, new coaches. Kelly has really sucked at beating good teams so a loss to USC seems nearly certain.

Too early to make any predictions but Kelly needs a good season. I will say this this is probably Kelly's best coaching staff he put together. We are putting together a Top 5 recruiting class so winning is very important this year. We are breaking in a new QB so predictions could be any where from 6-6 to 10-2. I need to see how Wimbush plays in the spring to have a more accurate decision. I think the Defense will be a lot better. ND has weapons all over the field on offense. The talent on offense is scary but it will come down to Wimbush. We should have a top 10 OL, Top 15 WR core, Top 15 RB duo and a very good TE. Right now I will say 8-4(I don't know if 8-4 saves Kelly.)
2017 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Schedule

1)Temple- Win
2)Georgia-(1st test) Loss
3)@ Boston College- Win
4)@MSU- Win
5)Miami(OH)- Win
6)@UNC- Win (They will be breaking in a new QB also.
7) USC- Loss
8) NC State- Win
9)Wake Forest- Elko wants this win
10)@ Miami- loss
1
1)Navy- Win
12)@Stanford- Loss

I see 8-4 with a chance at 10-2 depending on health and Wimbush. We can beat Georgia and Miami. No shot against USC and Stanford.

I think they may go 9-3, Miami doesn't impress me much and they too will be breaking in a new QB.

I expect an 8-4 season. There is enough talent surrounding Wimbush for the offense to be successful as long as the offense is run first oriented. The defense will determine how much success they have as they do every year. I see an improvement on defense but will it enough to change losses to wins? TBD

I'll go 8-4 as well. I think we got a shot in the Georgia game though, not so much on paper, I just have a feeling.

We started last year with some analysts predicting that ND would have a serious shot at the playoff. Then we go 4-8. As many of you know by now, I always think ND will win. I expect Wimbush to be better than Kizer, and expect ND to go 11-1, or worst case scenario 10-2.

word is spring ball looks good so far. Players are loving the new staff and they already see an big improvement. I know its only spring ball but its nice to see the players saying a lot of positives. Players even came out and say Kelly is a different coach. Lets hope this is all good when season comes around.

I was surprised how your recruiting still was strong after the year you had but like many say about USC I think some kids are going to be drawn to ND because its ND. You obviously had better than 4 win talent last year and will again this year. I wonder if Kelly just doesnt instill confidence and trust in his players. They seem to crack at the worst time and once things go bad they keep going bad. Hopfully the new staff puts things in order. I'm hoping USC wins in South Bend obviously but I hope you guys are undefeated when we visit. I'm glad they moved the start of the game to 430. Anything later and its a bitch to get back in time to Chicago for some pizza. lol.

Well, the good news is, some of the higher rated talent in the 2018 class were deeply committed to ND, and have been their most vocal recruiters, which has helped keep them together despite the chaos.

I think Kelly lost the locker room at some point last year, and not sure he has ever really had it in his entire tenure either. But what they need to do is get away from these coaches that think that their "scheme" is light years' better than anyone elses and get back to fundamentals.

They had a DC who was so proud of his NFL style defense that was too complicated to learn, took all available practice time to install, and they still couldn't get it, forced the brainier players to play instead of the raw talent, and didn't seem to give a rip about fundamentals.

Honestly, watching them doing tackle drills in spring practice made me want to vomit. The slowest and smallest guy was out there was plowing guys over (Fertitta). Some of them couldn't even get a body part on the receiver, let alone tackle them properly.

The coaches say they're returning to fundamentals, then worrying about installing. I hope that's true because they have their work cut out for them.

I saw Bishop Gorman play a few times and I saw Nico and he was a good HS player but I thought no way he sees the field for you guys his whole time there. But there he was in the USC game. I didn't know if it was so his friends and family could see him play or if you guys were really using him.

Our secondary was pretty thin. He's a hitter but he's slow.

But I suspect (and ND would never admit this) that Nicco was offered in order to entice Alize Jones to come.

I think everyone knows that and Bishop Gorman keeps pumping out players so any time you can get one it helps you with others. For his size he does pack a wallop but I'm sure he's a liability in coverage.
Gorman , St.John Bosco , Mater dei, Serra are the top schools out here. USC has seven player from Serra this season.
