12-4, a division crown, and advancing to the divisional via bye ain't a bad season, but it wasn't the best either.

Rewatching some vids from the season.

Footballoutsiders has a Titans vs Chiefs recap about the Chiefs struggling to run up the middle but then shows a 4th and 1 play where Demetrius Harris and James O'Shaunessy completely whiff on the important blocks.

In Steelers vs Chiefs highlights, Dee Ford struggles heavily to get pressure on one play that give Big Ben too much time. Ford is the only player on the Steelers oline that had single coverage.

On another play, Jarvis Jenkins gets pancaked and Bell runs for like 15.

Hali is the one who misses the sack on Big Ben when Ben throws the 50 yarder free play basically so that one is huge.

Jah Reid is the one who game up the pressure on the INT. Looked way super awkward trying to go into pass blocking against Dupree. Huge mismatch.

Berry lets the Steelers TE open on one play then gets the tip drill INT on the next. Zombo with the tip.

3rd and 9 play where the Steelers run the ball right at Ford and get like 20 yards. Sorensen was out of position but that might have been by scheme. Not sure if you put that one on the Steelers just having a bold gamble or Ford just being a target.

Then West gets an unbelievably awful fumble.

Sorensen then gets wiped out on a huge run. Berry also gets wiped out and Mitchell misses and adds about 5 more yards to the play before Wilson finally makes the play. Sorensen was probably the one who needed to make the play, though.

Chiefs get a 3rd and 3 running right up the gut behind Morse and Fulton with Ware taking a direct snap.

Hill gets a good run to the outside with a good block by Conley.

Fisher gets off the line really slowly and allows Harrison to get an easy sack on Smith. Nothing special about what Harrison did...any NFL player could've gotten that sack.

Kelce with a drop but he was doubled and really got popped. More credit to the Steelers D than fault of Kelce imo. Kelce still probably should've made the catch but I dont think its a knock on his talent or anything.

3rd and 20 and the offense makes its play of the game with Maclin getting 21, the oline holding up perfectly and Smith throwing a perfect ball.

Parker gives up a first down on 2nd and 9.

Nelson bites on a Big Ben pump fake pretty badly.

Creative double fake play to get Kelce a bunch of yards and he fights for an extra 3-4. Another big play to Kelce on a 2nd and super long to eat back some yards.

Conley with a good catch on 4th and 8. Clutch.

Schwartz almost gets beat but keeps the pocket clean, Alex Smith gets the ball out and Conley gets drilled.

4th and 2 to Anthony Sherman. Good play call.

Spencer Ware runs behind LDT and gets the easy score.

2pt conversion succeeded but the rip/slip call on Fisher. Yeah...

2pt conversion failed. Play honestly never had a chance. Not sure if you put that on Smith or Reid but the ball velocity wasnt good enough to make that play. Like you needed a prime Favre to make that throw.

3rd and 3 with Houston in coverage and Poe on the line. Big Ben flushes towards Poe's side and waits for his guy to get open. Yuck. Easy to pick this apart in retrospect but 3rd and 3 the Chiefs probably had to respect the run here, too. In that regard, this might have been the Chiefs most balanced formation but it didn't work.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*Chiefs need another LB thats good against the run. Top need
*The Chiefs probably need a blocking TE
*Chiefs could use a QB with a stronger arm and better vision downfield
*Chiefs could use another RB to replace West
*Chiefs could use another Defensive Lineman
*Chiefs could use a goldilocks pass rusher. Hali too old, Houston usually too hurt, Ford a little too finesse maybe
*Poe isn't a difference maker but the Chiefs definitely need all the help they can get against the run

*Offensive Line and Receivers are fine as long as they're all healthy
*Cornerback is now probably the strength of the team

I think the offensive line issues are somewhat overblown and the odds of finding upgrades in the draft are slim. Some of the penalties the OL took were tough, though, but your offense has to find a way to overcome that stuff.

So imo, go all-in to sign Berry, franchise Poe, draft a ILB in one of the first 3 rounds for sure and then also a QB, TE, DE, RB, OLB depending on value.

Any thoughts on Allen Bailey and Jaye Howard? They basically did nothing then got hurt. Chiefs run D issues were still prevalent when they were healthy with DJ.

I'd keep Howard because of his versatility; could spell NT specifically as the main NT sits, Bailey I'd consider cutting on a June 1st basis. Can't throw away talent with nothing behind it really besides Jones; skeptical as to the value of a FT on Poe.

That sounds about right. I'm dubious about Poe as well but there was only one other NT FA out there that I saw and Walterfootball basically gave him the same grade as Poe. Poe is just not the same player he was when he came into the league. The explosiveness just isnt there. He is either 1) playing hurt and he'll get better, 2) someone who is always banged up or 3) totally lost it.

Poe was just an average dude last season. I haven't even looked at the draft but if you're talking run defense in a 3-4 then Poe is basically as important as the QB and the guy that you have to be thinking is the most to blame.

Ouch, Footballoutsiders had KC ranked 32nd in runs up the middle.

I might possibly look at upgrading thr guard spots, but that's gonna be awful tough to do...

Chiefs olinemen all seem to be combo types so if they draft one then thats probably what they'd bring in.

Mitchell Schwartz has RT locked down. LDT seems to have had a great year, too. Morse struggles in some areas but overall seems above average. Fisher is probably above average in run blocking and below average in pass blocking but not likely to get replaced. I wasn't a fan of Ehinger coming out of college and I was a fan of Fulton but I was looking at Ehinger as a RT and he seems to be better than Fulton as a guard. Neither player is what I would call detrimental though how easily Ehinger was able to come in and win the starting job (and look like the better player) might either be a cause for alarm or a really good sign.

The Dline needs a bit more work than the Oline imo. The Chiefs bend but dont break defense is great when it causes turnovers but the offense can't sustain drives long enough for the defense to bend on a routine basis. The easier solution might just be to bolster the defense and to try and continue to win with an average offense. If the Chiefs continue to get 2 stars a draft then it almost doesn't matter what position they play imo. All phases of the game are connection. One would think that the offense getting better would be the priority but Id hate to see reaches.

Chiefs kicking the tires on CJ Spiller. I had no idea he was 29 but he has almost no miles on him so maybe something comes from it but 90% chance he isnt on the team when the season starts.

Chiefs extending LDT for 5 years it looks like. I'd be shocked if he played in the NFL that long instead of being a doctor but he was really good last year so that seems like a good extension.

Surprised by how much he got paid though. That is 3rd highest paid RG in NFL money now.

Yeah- I am a bit confused by this as well. How would residency even work for him?

2nd OL extension they've given out in-house where they expect better performance going forward than in previous years as a whole. Count Schwartz towards the top of RT contracts and it quickly is moving into one of the pricier OL's in the league. Mitch Morse completes his 3rd year next year- and he was not a 1st round pick. They seem pretty hellbent on making the great wall of Dallas 2003 OL competence. If LDT's improvement in pass protection is for real, and he actually plays, I am ok with this roll of the dice. This made more sense than Fisher did, imo. Quite the farcry when fans complained about the Rodney Hudson, Brandon Alberts, Jeff Allens, and Geoff Schwartzes of the world

I do agree this deal makes more sense than Fisher. I look at the Cowboys' lines of past though and they paid a lot more on actual production on the field showing they were top players at their positions more so than on potential. Seems like a quick way to get yourself in trouble.

Can be- can also be one of the few ways to get real value with your cap dollars- especially for a cap hamstrung team. Better have good scouts, coaches, and FO staff keeping their peas in a row or it does devolve into nonsense spending fairly quickly.

So according to Rapsheet, the Chiefs are trying to get Berry's deal done, and if they do get it done, they may franchise Poe. Cap doozy.

Great googly moogly.

Spend spend spend. Poe isn't worth the franchise but I like that idea about 10x more than signing him long term.

Very rough big board after the combine:

1st tier

Myles Garrett

Jonathan Allen
Jamal Adams
Leonard Fournette
Marshon Lattimore
Derek Barnett
Malik Hooker
Rueben Foster
Solomon Thomas
OJ Howard

Solid 1st rounders
Deshaun Watson
Dalvin Cook
Sidney Jones
Marlon Humphrey
Adoree Jackson
Jarrad Davis
Corey Davis
Christian McCaffrey

Upside 1st rounders
Mitchell Trubisky
Deshone Kizer
Garrett Bolles
Ryan Ramczyk
TJ Watt
Gareon Conley
John Ross
Chris Wormley
Forrest Lamp
Haasan Reddick
David Njoku

Solid 2nd rounders
Cam Robinson
Jalen Tabor
Antonio Garcia
Charles Harris
Zach Cunningham
Caleb Brantley
Montravius Adams
Mike Williams
Evan Engram
Bucky Hodges
Chad Hansen
Elijah Qualls
Samajae Perine
Kareem Hunt

Upside 2nd rounders

Nathan Peterman
Pat Mahomes
Taco Charlton
Malik McDowell
Jabril Peppers
Curtis Samuel
Alvin Kamara
Tim Williams

I'm probably higher on Watson and Wormley than most but I think both would be good fits for the Chiefs. I don't think Watson is going to fall, though. He won too much and a Dak/Mariota comparison doesnt hurt him at all.

I think the Chiefs can still get a star running back in rd2 if they miss one in rd1. I think its possible with all of these star secondary players in this draft that a QB can fall in rd1. Maybe hit up Nose Tackles and defensive line in rd3.
