5 potential cap casualties for the 49ers

Kaep and Bethea are givens.

Brooks is close to 'given' but i'll stop short of that. We simply don't have enough bodies at OLB, so we'll see how the draft goes? I'll also stop short on Beadles, cause we could use him as a back-up. For him we'll also see how it goes in the draft?

I would think we'll keep Torrey Smith, but if not, i'll be fine with it.

Kaep and Bethea should be gone. Niners need a new QB (whether through trade, FA or the draft). Taart should be given the opportunity to win the job at safety. Bethea will be 33 years old at the start of the upcoming season. Need to get younger at that position. If the Niners cut Brooks, they save 5.3 mil in cap money with about 850K in dead money. As you have stated, Niners do not have a lot of option at OLB. Regarding Torrey Smith, I would rather no have him come back. I don't know the cap hit, but he has underperformed granted he hasn't had a QB who can get the ball to him.

There may be guys who are team-worthy but might not stick around due to Shanahan's scheme and what looks like a switch to a 4-3 defense. Guys like Brown and Tiller on the OLine might not fit the outside zone. I also think they have to get a group of Ward, Tartt and Johnson on the field more often, and that would probably spell Brock. The OLB position only gets worse in the new scheme and I'm pretty uncertain about some guys on the Dline as well.

Gotta get some impact players, and with the cash on hand, it should start with free agency.

How many FA players are young enough to weather the rebuild seasons? The 9ers will need to build young for the future and it should start with the defense.

No question about it....no real point in signing a 30 year old impact player if they won't be make a dent if and when SF can return to respectability. I'm sure there are some mid-20's guys out there that can do some damage for us, and given the sweeping changes schematically, I'd be on board in being aggressive (intelligently) in the free agent area.

Really good read.

Not surprising and like he says, we're missing the key parts. But maybe we can fill one of them at #2 overall?

Breaking down the 49ers' new "4-3 Over" defense - Inside the 49ers

IF Buckner can handle the 3T, and Armstead the 4T (as he was touted for by Baalke), that is a very good start. Reading this article, both seem to fit what we need.....at least on paper.

Of course the big missing piece is the EDGE guy, and doesn't appear there is one worth #2 (past Garrett)? So like QB, doesn't look like we'll fill this position with a top prospect? But that is ok as long who we DO draft, pan out. Whether that is a LB or Safety, as long as he pans out. Looking at mocks, the odds are high our first pick will be a defensive player.

We're not going to get this D built with one draft, but filling two and MAYBE three spots would be great. Not saying two or three instant top starters, but maybe we get lucky heading into the following season.

So basically if Garrett isn't available the next best guy Allen fits in at the 1t position with a defensive line of Lynch, Buckner, Allen, and Armstead, they could do a lot worse.

If we're drafting him to play the Leo (the pass-rushing DE), ok, though that displaces Lynch. But Allen would be miscast as the 1T (or nose tackle). Allen is, first and foremost, a pass rusher. He really doesn't have the size to win consistently as a nose tackle. Now I suppose you could order him to gain 20 pounds or so but why do that to the guy? Just to force the pass-rushing round peg to fit into the run-stopping square hole? Remember, if we're really going whole-hog for the Seattle defense, then the nose tackle is meant to focus on stopping the run, clogging the middle. If he gains weight, I guess Allen could do that but it would be a waste of his abilities. If Garrett's not there, better to draft Foster (though his injury history gives me the Borland chills) or reach just a little bit for Solomon Thomas (though again you're displacing Lynch that way but displacing Lynch isn't really a huge concern of mine).

Little bit of chatter that a Kirk Cousins trade to SF during the combine time is in the works. I'm not a big fan of Cousins, but I gots ta roll with Shanny so.....

Hopefully it's only for a 7th rounder....heh.

I think it might be similar to the Alex Smith trade. Probably a 2nd rounder this year and maybe a 3rd next year which can go up to a 2nd rounder depending on Cousins' performance. Even if the Niners trade for him, he has no one to throw to since the wideout position is depleted. Cousins had Jordan Reed, Jackson and Garcon. Niners have Kerley, Smith and McDonald. Yikes!!

...which is one reason why I am hesitant on him. Anybody in today's game can throw for 4500 yards and 30 TD's....but can you really count on him in crunch time? Does he make other players better or was it all that Washington talent that made him?

Allen should be drafted because we project him to excel at a certain spot. Excel so much that he is projected All Pro or Pro Bowler at that spot, over his career.

Agree we shouldn't target him for 1T if that isn't where he's most effective. Even if he gains weight, some players just aren't meant for NT. IF we're looking for that run stopping NT via the draft, we shouldn't need to spend a 1st or 2nd round pick. If via the draft, target someone who is already an NT.

Go sign Center Mangold. Really help that Oline out.

He's 33 and past his prime. He was set to make $6.1 mil in 2017 with a cap charge of $9.1. He also missed 12 games last year due to injuries. Maybe a two year contract with incentives (# of games played). I don't know how much he has left in the tank.

We should avoid these types of FA's, 33 years old and past their prime. The only exception is QB, because we need one to bridge a year.

I like Cousins but I hope the 49ers don't trade the #2 pick for him.

Agree. Niners are in a rebuilding mode. Sign a veteran QB and build the roster through the draft. Niners need infusion of talent and that's done through the draft.
