K positive and negative from super bowl; shanahan had a great game plan in the 1st half. That's the positive. Negative shanahan had bad 2nd half adjustments. He stopped running the bell for some reason. Hope he learns from this. Overall I'm still excited about our new coach.

I was surprised the Falcons didn't run the ball when they had an 8 point lead. They were in FG range and those three points would have been huge. The Falcon's defense just wore down. They were on the field for over 90 plays. They couldn't generate a pash rush due to exhaustion. I too am excited with Shanahan. He's creative and innovative. Like Deep said, let's hope the Niners get lucky with the QB and both Lynch and Shanahan have solid drafts. Really need another pass rusher to compliment Lynch and Buckner. Another RB so Hyde doesn't wear down.

No question that 3 points would've been huge, it would've sealed the game. Its that fine line between staying with your scheme/being aggressive, versus killing the clock. In the 'big' picture you stay with your scheme, but in that particular sequence, yeah running seemed sensible once in field goal range. Plus, it wasn't at the limit of field goal range, they were in decent range.

IMO they should've mixed in a few more run plays during the entire 2nd half. Not necessarily straight hand-offs, but including draws and screens. A 'few' more mind you, not lean on it.

I think most of us already accept a vet QB will bridge the gap? Obviously, it won't be a big or popular name QB, because if he was THAT good, we wouldn't get him. But that is better than forcing one at #2 overall. Do draft a QB, maybe even two, and we wait till next draft. i read one site say next year's QB class will be good.

Lot of second quessing going on. Shanahan is taking a lot of criticism this morning. Maybe he could have called a couple of runs there but no guarantee it would have worked out. Plenty of blame to go around in blowing that huge lead. On those pass plays Freeman missed a block leading to a sack. Marr Ryan deserves some blame for holding onto the ball to long when he could have gotten rid of the ball to avoid a sack. And the Falcon's defense disappeared in the 2nd half. The pass rush which slowed Brady in the 1st half was nonexistent in the 2nd half.

Which is why we have to build a pass rush ourselves. The good QB's will make those throws all the time, especially in 2nd halves.

A pass rush doesn't all fall on one Pass Rusher, and it doesn't get built in one draft. But this is why i feel that 3 down, pass rushing OLB, is the main guy on D. If there is a guy like this, i'd draft him #2 overall since the QB's are weak. (IMO trading down won't be an option).

I think the guy that you want will be going #1. The win against the Rams killed the teams shot at the top pick.

:-)

Yeah that is right, the prospect who most fits this mode is likely going #1 overall. Is there no one else, like maybe Barnett? But ok, if no one else, then it is similar to QB, don't force one.

It is so easy to second guess calls and what the players were thinking (taking bad sacks, missing blocks, etc.) but the fact is that nobody knows the true extent of what actually happened. People automatically complained about some of the Shanahan calls....I want to know from those people if you know for a fact that the play ran was the play called. Did Ryan audible out? Does he have that unlimited freedom?

People are talking about the lack of running plays when they built their 28-3 lead....besides not knowing if plays were changed at the LOS or not, how many total offensive plays did they have, period? I don't know what the record is for fewest plays ran but I think the Falcons got off something like a total of 45 plays. That's ridiculously low.

The Falcons defense just ran out of gas, and that might be why they abandoned the man coverage and went zone. That was when Brady and co. took over. It took everything in NE's power plus the Falcons going in the opposite direction for the end results you saw last night.

Per Ian Rappaport as of Monday afternoon, the 49ers are ironing out the final details on the Shanahan contract and it is expected to be finalized soon.

Yes only 5 rushing plays. 9 rushing plays for 85 yards in the 1st half. 3 and 1 and throwing ball when up 16 was a killer to. Should of ran the ball twice in those situations.

Falcons had a melt down. Fault all way around, DC and OC and Quinn. Pats made adjustments in the 2nd half Atlanta did not. I hope Shanahan learned from that situation.

Freeman just rushed five times in the 2nd half. The Patriots made adjustments defensively, but you cannot abandon the running game that was tremendous in the first half. Ahead 28-20 and the Falcons having the ball at the Patriots 23 yard line, Falcons should have just rushed three times and had the Patriots burn their time outs. It would have been a 41 yard FG for Bryant and I believe he only missed one inside 50 yards all season. At that point, the clock is your ally and should have made it a two-score game. That was an epic collapse.

I wouldn't mind the Niners taking Rueben Foster in the first round. The only concern is that he has suffered multiple concussions. I would hate a repeat of Borland, although I respect his decision. Then in the 2nd round, maybe an edge pass rusher (Solomon Thomas - Stanford or Charles Harris - Missouri). Garrett will probably go to the Browns and Barnett will go top 15. Then draft a WR in the 3rd round.

Definitely give credit to the Patriots. They made the plays necessary to win. Brady was throwing darts in the 4th quarter. The OL gave him more time, albeit the DL of the Falcons was gassed. Even the DB's were gassed chasing Hogan, Amedola, Mitchell and Edelman all game long. The disparity of the offensive plays led to to demise of the Falcons. But even with all that going against them, they had the opportunity to make it a two-score game by just kicking a FG. You're on the 23 yard line and if you ran three straight time with no gain or even a four yard loss, Bryant makes the FG. You force the Patriots to burn their timeouts. Another mistake by Ryan was starting a play with 15 seconds left on the play clock. Use the play clock as much as possible. In the end, Brady was near flawless and made him the only QB to win 5 Super Bowls. Patriots took advantage of the Falcons' mistakes. That's what great teams do.

At some point the Head Coach is the one really at fault he's the one in charge. Tell the OC (he should know better than anyone) RUN THE DAMN BALL

I agree. Quinn should have learned from Pete Carroll in 2015. Should have ran the ball three straight times up the middle. Quinn should have overridden Shanahan. Can't worry about hurt feelings or stepping on someone's toe. You're the HC and you have the final say.

But that is going to be your head coach. So nobody will stop him from calling passing plays when you should be trying to run out the clock.

even though Shannahan isn't admitting to anything, i can't see him repeating this same mistake. Talking about ANY game from here on.

Better to learn that mistake as an OC for another team. I'm not as worried about it. Like I said at the end of the day the buck stops with the head coach and he's as much if not more to blame then anyone.

Tom Gamble is leaving the 49ers. Kind of sad to see him go but there probably wasn't a place for him in the new FO

Much like Tom Rathman decided to leave. It was sad because I felt he's done a very good job with the RBs. I think there are only two holdovers from last year's coaching staff. I know Tarver (LB coach) was retained.

John Lynch was interviewed yesterday by Fitz and Brooks on KNBR. I really like his demeanor. He's transparent and doesn't beat around the bush. I know there are things that can't be said to the media, but he's a breath of fresh air compared to Baalke.
