Look it's not a home run but it's at least a triple. Good pick up

Hey it might turn out to be a homerun.
Very true , every day I hear more and more good things. 1 coach said he is one of the best under the radar D.C. In college it might be scary what he can do with the level of talent ND gets compared to WF .

I hope I'm not being overly optimistic, but I have a really good feeling about this season with all things considered.

Here is a little info on the New Defense we will see at ND with new DC Mike Elko. I thought this was a good read didnt know much about the 4-2-5 Defense.

-Traditional 4-3 where linebackers are called MIKE, SAM, and WILL, the 4-2-5 uses MIKE, BUCK, and ROVER. The strong safety is referred to as the STUD, and the weak safety as the WHIP.
-MIKE will be lined up with an offensive lineman more times than not.
-Nyles Morgan is going to have to produce for Elko to have a successful Defense. Expect to see him Rush more.
-The other inside linebacker, the BUCK linebacker, has a larger hand in coverage compared to the MIKE. The BUCK will get a lot of man-to-man situations against RB's and TE's.
- Tevon Coney, Asmar Bilal and Greer Martini will be in the mix for the Buck.
-Who plays ROVER? Its Usually a 3rd LB. Some times a Tweener between OLB and Safety. Players in the mix would be Martini, Drue Tranquill , Donte Vaughn and Nicco Ferttita. Depending on what the offense is running.

Great Post. I really see this D helping ND. Only issues do we have the right athletes for this D. I want to say yes because we have tweener guys at the S/CB spot and S/OLB spot. I just dont know if we are athletic enough yet to really take advantage of this Scheme. 1st of all we dont have the pass rushers for this and our 4 front is not as deep now. I think in the secondary will be fine but if we dont get pressure on the QB they will struggle at times.

I think there are enough athletes in the back 7 to pull this off. It's just going to be a matter of figuring out who fits best where. I hope.

The only real pass rusher they have been able to recruit in the last 4 or 5 years has been Hayes with some guys that were 3 stars they've taken flyers on that for the most part haven't worked out or transferred. Hopefully Jones, Ogundeji, Kareem, Trumbetti, Bonner, Okwara and Hayes can provide some pass rush. One would hope they could at least get some pressure even if they rotate 6 or 7 guys into the lineup at DE.

Our recruiting of top defensive players has been trending down for a few years now. ESPN has ND with the 9th best recruiting class of 2017 and that's nice. BUT ONLY 1 OF OUR 10 RECRUITS IN THE 2017 ESPN 300 IS A DEFENSIVE PLAYER!

2013 we picked up 6 defensive players in the ESPN 300. (These guys are gone.)
2014 we picked up 4 (Morgan Trumbetti, Watkins, Martini).
2015 we picked up 2
2016 we picked up 2
2017 we are sitting at 1.

It looks like we will have a relative shortage of talent on our defense for the next few years. Elko will be working with a slightly more talented group compared to WF, but I think he will be facing more depth issues than what he had at WF. I think the most we can hope for is an above average defense.

When you realize that almost all of our top recruits have been offensive players. ND should have had a top offense, right? Nothing to show for these recruits.

2016 Scoring Offense 53rd. Scoring Defense 61st.
2016 Scoring Offense 62nd. Total Defense 42nd.

To all you guys that said our "offense is good, it is only the defense that is a problem", I say bullshit.

ND has underachieved on offense. ND should be closer to a Top 10 offense.

Don't get your hopes too high for next year.

This isn't entirely accurate, Notre Dame have recruited two players that ESPN list as a WR and OG to be CB and DT at the college level and other sites list those players as a DT or Athlete. Darnell Ewell and Saiid Adebo will be defensive players when the put on a helmet for Notre Dame.

Also in 2016 you were also incorrect Hayes, Kareem, and Vaughn were all ESPN 300 recruits and defensive players. Then two of the next 3 in the class as far as rankings go were defensive players in 4 stars Perry and Okwara.

Also wrong in 2015 they recruited 3 players in ESPN 300 for the defense Shaun Crawford, Jerry Tillery, and Te'von Coney and then two more highly rated LB's in Barajas and Bilal.

2017 Adebo is listed as WR and his video shows him playing nothing but WR. I would like to know that he has some experience playing defense before I would consider him to be a top defensive pick. Elwell is listed as OG but his video shows him playing both ways. I will concede Elwell, but not Adebo. 1 point me, 1 point Poe

2016 I missed Hayes, Perry and Okwara are not on ESPN 300 list for 2016. 2 points me, 1 point Poe.

2015, the 2 I was referring to were Crawford and Coney. Tillery was listed as OT on ESPN 300. Barajas and Bilal did not make the ESPN 300. 3 points me.

6 points me.
2 points Poe.

The guys like Tillery and Adebo are playing defense at Notre Dame so they are in fact defensive players. I never said they were ESPN 300 recruits so no points for you. I merely stated that according to espn they were 4 star players and some of the next best players in the Irish class so your logic that they hadn't recruited any talent to the defense was false. Also many of the guys I listed like Bilal and Barajas, Okwara, and Perry were in other sites top rankings just not ESPN's. I was pointing out inaccuracies in what you were saying about the type of players at Notre Dame.

We signed WF LB coach. Good hire I hope. They seem to play a major role in this system. Nice to have the LB coach from that system to teach these kids.
