He looked good early in the round. I think he'll get, the mental concentration part, down the road.
The question is.....Will his back allow him, to play enough golf, to relearn this?
He may have to be, just an ordinary "one of the guys on the PGA tour", for a year, to get back his confidence.

TV ratings need him.

I realize that this appears to be a somewhat easy course by PGA standards. Still - Tiger had a very good day - 7 under for the day & no bogies. He also seem very relaxed. It was odd seeing him playing solo (since Rose WD before the round). Don't believe that golf needs him to do well on TV (due to the other up & comers on tour). However - it certainly doesn't hurt.

For years now, it has been nothing but a Pyramid scheme of excuses for Tiger.
And just like all Pyramid schemes you run out of something before you get to the top.

Sooner or later Tiger and his supporters are going to run out of excuses for why he no longer can compete.

Eh. He certainly didn't do well down the stretch. Maybe this is what happens when you have not played for a while or maybe not. Who cares. He either makes a comeback that will be entertaining for many or he doesn't & we just settle for the many things he has already accomplished. I can deal with it either way - there are plenty of other golfers to watch.

It just amuses me that some folk take this so personally. Just enjoy whatever golfer that you like & don't worry about it.

I always thought the PGA Tour was more exciting whenever Tiger is there on Sunday. It is like MLB with the Yankees. Whether you cheer for them or not, they make things interesting and give you someone to root for or against. I hope Tiger makes a run at being good again and in the conversation on Sundays, but I don't know. It feels like he is just too much muscle and lost his game.

You have been around here long enough. You know of no instance in say some other professional sports that some team or a specific player gets special treatment? ...and it happened against your team or player.

I'm thinking somewhere in those 5000 posts you have come across just that. And in that moment I'm betting you were not amused then.

In team sports especially with a rival - sure! With a freaking PGA golfer? Not really. Certainly not to the pt where I wish for nothing but the worst for that player (like I have heard and seen numerous times in regards to Tiger Woods). The ones that I love the best are those in the comments sections of articles where the same folks complain about the over-coverage of Tiger yet time after time after time they read and respond to these articles & no doubt also watch him on TV.

As far a special coverage - well if you have won almost 80 PGA tour wins (far more than any current player) & 14 majors you are going to get special coverage - that's life. Also - they are going to cover things more if they believe that it brings in ratings. They are gearing more towards the non-golfers since the diehards like us will watch regardless. If the Tiger ratings decline (which they did somewhat more recently) they will show him less (and they have). Oh well - different strokes for different folks.

BTW - even if he turns out to suck I really didn't see anything from this version of Tiger to irritate people. He didn't throw any tantrums, was very cordial and didn't even hint at withdrawing as many have suggested. I also didn't hear any excuses from him. He just stated that he is early in his comeback attempt & we will see. He also seems to get along really well with the other golfers (that was on display at the Ryder Cup).

So if he fails in his comeback - so be it - as long as he acts professionally which he appears to be doing this time around. Peace.

I wouldn't call injury an excuse, but the reality is his run as the dominant player is over and it was over before the injuries started piling up.

Nobody stays on top forever, MJ didn't, Gretzky didn't, Mariano Rivera didn't...not understanding why he needs an excuse. I do agree Tiger will reach a point where he knows it over as a PGAT player. At some point your skills erode...father time is undefeated.

What special treatment do golfers get? Specifically Tiger?

Oh, you mean like that one time someone called from their house because they saw a replay where Tiger's ball wasn't set down in the right place by like an inch and they penalized him for it?

And this what I'm talking about right there. And I know you remember all of the "swing changes" & "process"
And yes you are right again, nobody stays on top forever. Tiger's run may go down as THE greatest run not just in golf but in any sport. But it could not go on forever and that is normal. But that talk is blasphemy in the golf word as it relates to Tiger.

The powers that be in golf have all colluded to always give the public a reason (an excuse really) why Tiger is not winning. They have to make sure the public thinks it's "temporary"

What you're saying is true as it relates to the golf media. They're back on Tiger's jock since he's survived his marital issues. But in general the golf media does that for aging stars...even when Jack had clearly lost it as a regular winner on tour, every event he teed it up at they still waxed poetic as if it was 1975...of course he did go on to win a few more events, but he was no longer the dominant player he was, same with Arnie.

idk about his supporters, but Tiger is on record saying the thought crossed his mind that it might be over all together, and I've also heard him say he thinks he 18 is still within reach. If he can hold up for 72 holes, I can see Tiger winning again on tour, but like I said earlier...his run as dominant player is over.

If he wants to use injury as the reason (excuse)? Okay, he was the one swinging all out for 20 yrs. The yips got Johnny Miller. Something gets every aging star golfer.

It will be interesting to see how Tiger does this weekend. He loves the course. Golf needs his TV ratings

What are the cameras going to do for the next 2 days?

Yesterday there was a camera watching him walk down the fairway when real golf was being played... yet we have to watch Tiger walk down the course staring at his ass. Riveting coverage.

Tiger: Jan 27th 2015 (this is after 2 back injuries Tiger says the following)

"My driving has come around a lot faster," said Woods, who is playing the Waste Management Phoenix Open for the first time in 14 years. "I'm a lot longer than I thought I ever could be again. My speed is way back up, and that's fun. I'm touching numbers that I did 15 years ago, so that's cool."

In the eight tournaments Woods played worldwide through the PGA last year, he struggled to find fairways off the tee, much attributed to the back problems that caused him to have March 31 surgery. His comeback was derailed by another back issue that he says now is fine.

Tiger: Feb 1st 2017 (this after last week when people criticized his driving at Farmers.)

"So you do it differently. If you look at the list of guys who have shot below 60, you realise Jim Furyk's on there twice. He averages 270 off the tee, shoots two rounds under 60. So it can be done different ways.

"The simplest thing is I just play away from pain. That's it. Whether my swing looks classical, rhythmical or it may look unorthodox, I don't care. As long as I don't feel that nerve pain."

Tiger is just making this up as he goes. One of these days the truth will come out on what has bee going on with Tiger the last several years.
