i think the problem the Flyers have right now is that they absolutely need Schenn. Outside of Jake and Giroux he's probably their most dynamic scoring opportunity creator outside the crease. Simmonds obviously finishes a lot, but it's from in tight and after someone generated the opportunity for him by getting the puck to the net.

Exactly. I expected less initially (4.5-4.8 or so) until I saw the comparable deals being handed out which pushed him up over 5. But like you said, they were going to re-sign him for at least one year even if the arbitration went poorly, and even if they had to make other roster tweaks as a result. They couldn't afford not to.

I think the signing isn't that terrible to be honest. Schenn is still only 24 y/o and his numbers appear to be going up. Locking him up for 4 years in which he will be in his prime years is something to be excited about. Hextall overpaid and probably was smart to do this rather than going to arbitration imo. As far as the cap goes, Hextall will figure it out. I'm not too concerned.

i get what you are saying here but this approach of 200-300k doesnt really matter isn't really a big deal when you look at ONE contract. my issue continually with flyers signings is that they end up overpaying by that amount with every reasonable player that they sign. when you add that up you are basically sacrificing another player that could potentially be in the 4-5 mil range. I am not upset at this one contract, i just think this is once again an example of overall cap management oversight.

he has done a great job of ridding himself of some dead money and paying those that have been with the organization. this move is a long term goal, i hope to be proved wrong with schenn i have been very hard on him. he really only earned this type of contract in the second half of his contract year, so i think i am justified in being skeptical.

i agree. i think he may have turned the corner, or at least i hope so.

I think everyone is good with this deal if Schenn continues to produce at 26+ goals and 59+ points. If he regresses to one of his previous seasons, he is not worth this kind of money.

So, like Hexy is alluding to. He better continue to improve on his game because he's been well paid to do just that.

With Manning in, Provorov will have to beat out A Mac to make the team. Sending A Mac down actually save a little more than Provorov makes.

Do we save a lot by sending AMAC down? After the way he played when he came back last season I was thinking of him playing with the big club and having him earn some of that big pay day we signed him to.

Only $950,000. If Provorov is good enough, We use A Mac's saving to keep him. I really think every one else is solidly in the top 6. Manning can be #7.

I like it I can't see Schenn regressing if anything how much better can he get? He has all the tools let's enjoy the ride.

I think that Laughton will stay on the wing too and be right behind Schenn. Will help fill that void.

Good signing with Manning he should also improve if anything he will be a very good 7.

I say let the players earn their position with a vet getting a tiebreaker...

Yep, agree with all that's been said. If Schenn plays up to his second half from last season, this is a good signing.

I agreed with you as i was reading it, then i went back and read the comments about the Gudas signing and they were essentially the same haha. it's a good point for sure.. if you add it all up it makes a difference. but it is certainly nice to not have the 5 mil + contract out there for a 2 mil player.. at least, lets hope Schenn doesn't turn in to that.. that's why i like shorter term deals. even superstars aren't going to stay superstars for 7-8-9 years and at the end it's so difficult to move that player that your screwed.

while you're still battling to become a contender, long term contracts dont make sense to me. if you're "1 piece away" sure, go and break the bank on a 9 year 7 mil AAV contract because you couldn't afford the 4 year 9 mil AAV contract.. but until you're "one piece away" that doesnt make sense to me.. protect your long term future.

One of the many reasons why we have only 413K cap space left for this season as of now.
