thinkin about trade'n my 2008 F150 for new 2016, but I'd like to get a few opinions from you guys - Ford & Chevy owners alike.
* Do you / have you owned an F150 or F250 ?
* Diesel - pro & con
* F150 vs Silverado
By all means - chime in with your comments and/ or ideas - your recommendations are very appreciated.

Have owned Ford and Chevy.
Have had both as work trucks as well.
Half ton trucks, V8 both in 2wd and 4wd.

I have had much better luck with Fords, they seem to be tougher. The Chevy's may have been nicer for the packages that I purchased or was given, but I have experienced Fords that were as nice, just not under my6 long term care/ownership.

Diesel, costs more to buy, gas mileage is a sometimes/sometimes not kind of thing. I know some people who swear they are getting over 20 mpg with their diesel, while others are at 12 empty or loaded. Diesel is cheaper right now. And it holds value. Not available in either brand in half ton, need to move up to F-250 0r 2500.

Thanks for your comments Yankee T - the diesel issue comes into play when choosing F150 or 250.

Here's my baby, which I'm not totally sure I'm ready to part with. With 100,000 miles, I'm just thinking that maybe it's good time to trade up while it still holds value. My main issue is this: I can't seem to find a regular cab. Everything's either extended cab, crew cab, king cab, take everyone out to dinner cab, etc.. Am I the only one who wants a regular cab anymore ? Also, I want an 8 foot bed. With an extended cab, comes a compromised beg length.

Let's here your comments...

Pickups are definitely not my thing, but I have a few buddies who swear by them. One has a 2016 F150 with an EcoBoost and he loves it. Tows more than his last v8 and gets better gas milage. Another buddy had a Raptor, which was pretty awesome, but got rid of it when gas was $4 a gallon and it was costing him $120 to fill up every week

Are you going to be towing? How long do you plan on keeping the truck? Thats will help out with whether or not you need a diesel. A friend has F350s for work trucks, and I'd never want to be driving in one of those full time.

Thanks hokie - I do appreciate the feedback on the v6 EcoBoost vs. the Triton 5.4 that I have in my 08. I will be towing my boat / only short distances however - a 21 foot runabout which my 08 has no difficulties what so ever. If I find the model I want - with the features I want - I may keep it for quite some time as I may take an early retirement in the next few years, and I'd rather not spend my money on truck payments.

Love this, have a Wrangler Rubicon. But I still don't think I'd buy one (unless they can get the towing up some, maybe with the longer wheelbase it will).

Looking at you just towing a boat, no need to push over the half tons today unless you have other reasons...

Guessing you are well under 5k lbs there. I've heard a lot of good things with that ecoboost V-6. Heck if it's just a boat for short distances, and you don't want a full size, I'd wonder about the Chevy Colorado diesel even (no idea if people like these). I wouldn't be surprised if they tow better than a 10 year old full size even.

And just for fun looking at towing specs.

Your 08 is rated for 8200 lbs. 2.7 Eco is 7700-8500, 3.5 is up to 10,700. Granted you won't be close to that, but that's insane. I remember looking at a 2000 Triton V-10 F350 once and I think that was limited at 10k lbs (went a bit higher I think for a 5th wheel). Now a V-6 half ton is built to pull that?

I really like the Eco 3.5. It's super torquey and completely adequate. Aluminum panels is also great...not wasting weight where it's not useful. Plus, I've always driven Fords and Lincolns. We just finished a 3 year lease on an explorer with the ecoboost and it was really great. Add to that I'll never buy a Chevy for the way they fucked the taxpayers on that bailout then bankruptcy.

That said - I just do not like driving an F-150. The ride is so refined, I feel like I'm completely disconnected from the road....to such an extent it kinda' freaks me out! I'm used to big cars, too. But that F-150 just feels doesn't feel right to me. It feels like I have to pay too much attention to stay in my lane than should be necessary.

Ford desperately needs a mid-size with the 3.5 EB as an option. I don't need the boxy size...just make it tough and torquey.

I really do hope the Ranger comes back. That 3.5 would be a beast in that truck, heck the 2.7 would be great. I can see the 1.6 for the low end model, 180 HP/TQ. But the 3.5 I think in it's most base form is something like 350/350, and they get it up to 380/460 in the navigator and supposedly 600+ on the new one in the next gen GT. But something of those two engines and maybe a turbodiesel from their overseas Rangers would be great.

If you want something that drives like a truck, Wrangler lol. Solid rear axle, sits a mile off the pavement. Aerodynamic as a brick.

I agree with you on the new trucks driving like cars... Have had a few as rentals, and wow. Maybe it's just me, but seems like in the interest of fuel economy and road handling, they no longer have the clearance either. I had a 98 Silverado 4x4 years ago and that thing was pretty impressive on rocks stock, don't think I would try that with any of the trucks today. When they had the Avalanche and Fords expedition version and the Ridgeline I thought that would fill that miche, but really seems like they just gave the half ton truck that category.

And agree on the smaller pickup. I've looked a little bit (wife wants a travel trailer and Jeep's towing leaves a lot to be desired if you want something like that).

The eco boost and that Hemi that shuts down half the cylinders would give a turbo diesel a run for the money in everything but torque. I just want one that fits easily in the garage and doesn't drive like a boat. If nothing pops-up by the time I'm ready for another car, I'll buy a new 3.5 ecoboost and drop in an old vehicle and be done.

I shoulda' kept my '89 Wagoneer and dropped a modern engine in it. It was the perfect size...had great visibility and, best of all, had a lift gate just wide enough for a sheet of plywood.

This is from a commercial viewpoint...our construction biz fleet has 6 pickups...4 F250s, 1 F350 1 GMC Sierra...all 4x4, all diesel. Let's say looks are subjective, but imo the Fords look better, the wheel wells on the GMC just looks funny to me.

These trucks do log about 40 to 50k mi every year a hauling bobcats and the like...mileage ranges from 145,000 to about 185,000 on the F350 now...the F350 just had a new engine put in, 2 of the F250s have had major transmission work, the other two F250s have had marginal non-engine/drivetrain work...the GMC...to my knowledge, it's never been in the shop for anything but reg. maintenance, tune up, etc.

That said...this Raptor would be my purchase.
