Thanks Neb. He's exactly what I was dreaming about back when I started this thread. We had a pair of woodcock points last week out on the WMA. My gun at home in the cabinet for the closed season of course!

Good looking dog.

I've been dealing the health decline this last month of the best Hunting dog I've ever had the pleasure of one company. Today my vet sent off blood work and samples over night to find out what we are dreading it to be cancer. I've had her open up and we removed a stick from her stomach that poked a hole in stomach and caused peritonitis. We thought it was licked until last Friday things went from better to worse. Watching your best hunting partner decline and suffer is worst feeling ever. Letting her or him go is no fun but you know its for the best. The heartache for me lingers a long time and I don't know if I'll ever truly get over this one. But when you get that new pup it's pure joy and you no longer have that hole in your heart.

So sorry to hear about your present stage of life with your pup AHFox. I was there the fall before last with my brittany. It's so hard to do.

The good news is that you're also correct that a new pup turns the sadness into fond memories of the old pup.

Hope that happens for you soon~

....and may I suggest a Llewellin setter?!

I hate that you are going through this. I have had many dogs and it never is easy to have one go but getting a new one and looking forward to the years of joy with that dog helps ease the pain.

Thank you guys for your kind thoughts and words. We got lucky she was having a bad reaction to one of the meds she was on it was such a relief. She looks rough but is on the mend I have a feeling it will be mid to late summer before she is back to her old self. However I don't know if she will be hunting this fall. I will let her tell me what she wants to do.

I know the day will come when I grow tired of burying dogs. I'm not sure when that will be and it won't be much fun but it will definitely happen.

Figured I'd post a couple pics of my pups in this thread.

This is Princess. She's my best dog. She'll be 6 this year and she is a bird finding machine. I remember the first weekend I hunted her. I turned her loose and within 5 minutes my Garmin was beeping at me telling me she was on point 190 yards due north. Damned if she didn't have a 25 bird covey pointed when I got there. So we flush those, and shoot a few. We take off and my collar is beeping at me again saying she's got another covey pointed 200 yards to the west. Damned if she didn't have another 20 bird covey pointed. That was at less than two years old. She's something special.

This is Hazard. He is one of Princess' puppies and he's bred to the hilt. He's a beautiful dog with a great disposition and he's starting to figure it out. He's a little slower maturing (as are all males), but he's gonna be a good one. He's about to turn three and he's really starting to figure these wild birds out. He's also a real gentleman and backs like a champ. Looks like a million bucks too.

This is Duchess. She's another one of Princess' puppies. Also bred great. I think she's going to be a lot like her mama. She's got a great motor, disposition, and the trainer absolutely raved about her. This will be her first hunting season.

This is Pepper from a few years ago. She's my old girl. She'll be 12 in November. I initially decided to retire her last season, but she seems to have some spring left in her step. I'll just have to pick my spots. But I've killed a lot of birds over this old woman, and she's been a great dog. She's got a wonderful disposition, and she has always had a nose for birds. She truly just loves to hunt and even as an old dog gets pissed if you leave her in the box when you make a circle. I don't know how much longer I'll have her, but it's going to be tough to let her go. She was my first black and white short hair.

Great looking dogs. Hopefully, they're adding joy to all your lives beyond just the hunting.

Beautiful dogs romeo, thanks for posting the pics.

Whip pointed a woodcock at the edge of our property yesterday and he was so intense it was amazing. I can just stand over a point for minutes admiring a bird dog on point.

Such nice looking pointers. I've had labs all my life but if I ever add another breed to house hold it will be a Elhew Pointer. I've admired the English and Irish setters but here in SD long haired dogs the cocker burrs just cause to many problems I want to deal with.

A very fine looking string of dogs. All of them have great style. We have been seeing a bunch of small Quail just starting to fly, I hope we get in another hatch.
