American interest in tennis is as infinitesimal as the Asia-Pacific's interest in the NFL.

The Aussie Open is a huge event for a giant part of the world, and regardless of how it effects a sliver of viewers in the US, they schedule it perfectly for their population.

Is there a way to measure ratings across countries for the AO?

ESPN's more hours of broadcast compared to NBC's from the mid 2000s and before has to have helped a little in the US.

I would like to see that too. I would also like to see what the dollars spent (both viewing and equipment) are on the sport in each country. I would be willing to bet what is spent in Asia on tennis is bug dust compared to the US and Europe.

I know people usually hate on espn but they do an amazing job with grand slam tennis. Their coverage of the US Open and Wimbledon is much better than USA, CBS, and NBC. Tennis channel does a good job with the French open as well. Both are much better than NBC

Agree.

Just from an hours point of view, I like what ESPN does with the AO, Wimbledon, and the USO.

The stupidest thing NBC used to do was not just tape delay the SFs for the FO and Wimbledon. But they'd then show the 2nd match 1st, which would reveal who won the 1st match.

I like Tennis Channel's coverage of the FO. Wish either they or ESPN would show the Finals. At least Tennis Channel re-airs the SFs, and they do it in one giant block. So it's usually around 1 PM PST that Tennis Channel re-airs the FO SFs, and they do it for the next 7-9 hours. So I know I can have one continuous block on my DVR later in the day.

I didn't mind CBS in general. But they screwed up the 2010 USO Finals, when they didn't want to resume the match after rain delays, because it would mess up their prime time shows on Monday night. So instead they gave it to ESPN to continue the match.

But me, not knowing any of this, had recorded the match on CBS, because that's the channel it started on. Imagine my disdain when Fast Forwarding through the rain delay, to see that they didn't resume the match. Then trying to figure out if it was rescheduled to Tuesday or not. Then trying to find a download of the match, only to then get the results spoiled while searching for that.

Other than that, CBS was ok. But ESPN has done a better job with the USO.

I can understand if people don't like their broadcasters. I'm just saying in terms of hours of coverage, and having streaming options for the other courts, it's a good deal.

I also remember watching early rounds of Wimbledon on HBO in the mid 1990s. I wonder how those ratings compare to when NBC eventually took over, then ESPN. Just would like to see the numbers, it would be interesting.

I also wonder how much Argentina and Spain spend on tennis. Would be curious just to see the numbers, compared to the US.

You'd be wrong about Asia's (and Australia's) interest in tennis being less than the US's.

ESPN was able to get rights to all of the slams because none of the networks wanted it. If people were watching, the networks would've paid to hold on to rights at least for major finals. Nobody gives a fuck about tennis in the US, and it's just getting worse since we have only had 1 contender for majors in the past decade.

ESPN is fine. Mostly because there's no Mary Carillo since they fired her stupid ass.

I watch as much as I can of major tennis either on ESPN 3 or on DirecTV's special coverage because the commentators are so much better, and they don't do the neverending statistical analysis.

I thought Carillo only did NBC?

She was also a part of the 2014 Olympics.

Carillo does all of that, but she also used to do commentary on ESPN.

When her idiotic face comes on Olympic coverage, I go to a different channel for a few minutes. She usually does the lame "let's learn about the culture" pieces, so it's pretty easy to avoid.

LOL, that's exactly what Carillo did for the Olympics. She interviewed Sharapova and asked her about Russian culture.

What did Carillo say that was racist, that also got Shriver to call her out on?

Also, is Annacone still Sloan's coach? Just wondering, because he did a lot of segments with Tennis Channel last year. Not sure how he can have time for both.
